LOVELY! I always like to see Boromir portrayed as strong, caring and protective. After all this was the Captain of the White Tower, beloved of his soldiers and his people, before the ring took him.In the book, Boromir says he will go to his city himself if his help to the fellowship has not earned him any
company. I suspect he knew for some time that most of them put the ring quest
first.

I really love the conversations Boromir had in this chapter, first with Merry and Pippin and then with Frodo. I always enjoy moments between Boromir and the hobbits, and these were great. And eeeeeee, poor Pip! I remember now that you mentioned at the start of this story that there would be Pippin h/c but I'd forgotten and this came as a (very worrisome!) shock to me. I'm eagerly awaiting the next chapter. *leans forward eagerly* Let the Pippin-healing begin! :D

Interesting how Boromir is the one to tell Frodo that Aragorn would go with him to Mordor, rather than to Minas Tirith.

And Frodo thinking that he endangers the rest of the Fellowship. So is it the Ring whispering to him that he must leave them for their sakes?

I'm a bit behind on commenting on this fic. I love fics that explore these times on the Quest, the hours and days that passed that Tolkien *didn't* write about. This is a fascinatingly real and canon-like view of what might have transpired. Your characterizations of the Fellowship are just perfect- their voices ring so true to me, and the way you show them interacting with with each other is lovely. I especially love how you are showing the conflict inside Boromir as the Ring takes him over, yet he still struggles to protect and comfort Frodo. Really fantastic writing, Shirebound. Thank you so much!!

Poor Boromir! The Ring is working on him so subtly, he can scarcely tell. Yet Merry and Pippin are still able to distract him.

I loved Merry's observations about Frodo: always different. He had a destiny to fulfill, and that difference was part and parcel of it. Yet underneath it all he still remains a hobbit, and so the differences troubled him. And it is like Merry to have seen it, known it and worried over it, probably all of Frodo's life.

Poor Pippin! Who dislodged the boulder? Could it have been Gollum?

It looks like we're in for a stretch of Frodo angst, Merry angst, and some Pippin comfort. How sad! *grin*

I rather liked that little touch where Frodo is shaken by Pippin's injury and Sam observes that he hasn't yet built up coping skills for when someone is hurt, because so far he has always been the one who is hurt!

I like these scenes showing interchanges among different members of the group, especially Boromir. You are doing a good job of showing how rational he thinks he's being about everything - and it seems that way from following his line of thought.

The cousins' concern about Frodo is touching (because Frodo never really has fit in, has he?), and for a time they anchor Boromir (until he slips away again). Showing Frodo's shock at seeing another of them hurt reinforces his decision to leave the group soon as well.

Boromir is great in this chapter. I love his growing care for Merry and Pippin, as well as his utter lack of interest in the story about The Party. He really seems to deal with the hobbits as grownups, which is a nice change from most hobbit-anybody else interactions. And that moment when Frodo hugged him after the boulder fell must have nearly torn him in two, given what else is preying on his mind.

That's heartbreaking, Janet. Boromir, getting deeper and deeper into danger by his own unspoken and unacknowledged desire for the ring, and someone bringing the fellowship in even more danger (as if there was not enough danger anyway!) Thrilling and an a very "well composed" way angsty - and poor Pippin!
