Burying The Hatchet  by Jay of Lasgalen 13 Review(s)

I like the idea of Frodo playing peacemaker. It does seem to fit well with his observant, thoughtful personality, and it gives him something to do for that long first part of the trip, before the breaking of the Fellowship.

Must have been unpleasant for Legolas and Boromir, though, to be the only nonsmokers in the party. They probably had someone's pipe smoke in their faces all the time.

Author Reply: Frodo seems quite insightful, and at this stage, before the ring has got too much of a hold on him, he can clearly see the dangers if Legolas and Gimli continue arguing.

Legolas and Boromir would have had to put up with breathing the others' smoke - but at least it wasn't usually deliberate!

What was Gimli smoking? It was surely never Old Toby, nor Longbottom Leaf. It was more reminiscent of Old Toby’s socks – unwashed ones, at that.

Love it! This is a wonderful interlude, and a rare look at Frodo the peacemaker and diplomat.

Author Reply: I have a sneaking suspicion that Gimli deliberately put his foulest-smelling tobacco in his pipe this time - just to annoy Legolas.

I think that after handling Merry and Pippin, Frodo would be good at quelling disputes!

I really like your capable, insightful Frodo. The fact that he draws on Bilbo is a great touch. After all, as he says, Bilbo was there and the elves didn't know he was watching them, so they would have behaved naturally. Good point.

Author Reply: I think Frodo was wise and sensible, and he'd be able to see the dangers of friction within the fellowship. After the horrors of Moria, it seemed a good time for the 'This has gone far enough!' speech.

Gimli had only ever heard the dwarves' version of events, of course. He'd forgotten about Bilbo.
