An Unexpected Guest  by Dreamflower 32 Review(s)

Loved the talk between Mellor and Dody about healers and their patients. Dody should be glad he has not to deal with Pippin or Paladin right now ;-)
The other part is quite dark. Who has set the trap where Mellor probably was injured? I'm quite curious to know more. And poor Eradan, he must be very worried now. I hope nothing bad happens to him, too, and he is reunited with Mellor soon.

Author Reply: I am enjoying Cousin Dody. As you know, he's a rarity in my Shire, a male healer, not to mention being a Brandybuck. But I am certain that he does not envy Poppy or Lavender their dealings with the Tooks!

There are some clues, as well as clues in Road to Edoras.

They will be re-united, never fear. I'm fond of happy endings whenever feasible.

Poor Eradan; how will he find his companion without breaking the edict? Please update soon.

'it must be a difficult thing for him to be a warrior and a king as well as a healer.'

How true!

I think Esmeralda likes Mellor. She adventurous Took enough to have a hankering for the excitements of outside the Shire, I reckon. Might she visit Gondor in the future?

Poor Eradan is right to be worried.

Author Reply: I have often been struck by the contrast in Aragorn's three roles in life: healer, warrior and king. Judging from the tender compassion he shows to his companions in the books, I think that healer is the role that he feels suits him best. The other two are more or less duties and necessities. It does not make his fierceness as a warrior or his wisdom as a king any less, but it does put them into perspective.

I don't think *my* Esmeralda will make such a journey, but I have read a couple of lovely fics where Pippin and Merry take their mothers on such a journey. One of them in Challenge 17.

Well, yes, for he has no way of knowing that his partner is already being taken care of.

As good as what I've come to expect from you. I look forward to the next chapter!

Rangers are noted for their courage and devotion to duty. Even when it means that Rangers with bad headaches listen politely to the less than tuneful piping of young Ilberic.

Esmeralda is a very sensible hobbit. Showing off noble Rangers is definitely a good way of getting others to see that there are as many different types of men as of hobbits.

Eradan is doing a good job of tracking Mellor down - although I don't know if going into the Old Forest is the best idea.

Good story!

Poor Ilbie! In one of my other stories I had a throwaway bit about Pippin teaching him to play the shepherd's pipes. I decided that while Pip is amazingly talented, and quickly learns any instrument set before him, Ilbie is like me, an enthusiastic amateur, who will probably never be more than adequate.

Well, the hobbits of Buckland are pretty enthusiastic about King's Men, but this is going to be their first (open) encounter with a Ranger.

Eradan is doing better than Mellor expects him to, although there are probably some other more subtle signs that he has missed altogether.

I'm now caught up on this tale and it's delightful *and* interesting as well. Loved Mellor's observation on not feeling hungry and then his stomach growling..."I'm turning into a hobbit." LOL!! That's happened to me a couple of times when I've been sick, so I can relate. :oD

If Mellor's trail heads to the Old Forest, that could be the answer to how he came to be bopped on the head. Those trees are not nice after all. Eradan's reaction was so in character w/a Ranger who has heard the tales of the Old Forest. I could even hear the tone he used. :o)

Looking forward to seeing how this story progresses.

Author Reply: It's happened to me today. *yuck* Very unpleasant to have to eat when you're not feeling up to it.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens...

Aha--the Old Forest, is it? So, that could be how he ended up in the Brandywine, after all, via the Withywindle, perhaps. Oh, Old Man Willow....

Author Reply: Well, we'll just have to see...

Very wonderfully told, Dreamflower; agree with the beginning realization that Frodo is not well, and Will is feeling overwhelmed, and love the way the situation is unfolding. Like Ilberic myself!

Author Reply: Yes, this takes place in my chronology just a few weeks after the delegation left, and just a few weeks before Frodo resigns as Deputy Mayor. I think that Will would have liked to have kept Frodo on, but it was just not feasible. At this point Frodo is beginning to distance himself from the job.

I kind of like Ilberic. He's one of the few canon cousins younger than Pip, though not by much, and in one of my other stories I had a little throwaway bit about Pippin teaching him the shepherd's pipes.

“Well,” he thought, “that’s perfect. Just perfect.”

LOL...yeah, I agree! I thought this was a wonderful, hobbity tale and now I learn that it's just a foretaste of Road to Edoras? Now I'm hungry for more, but I wanted to read your Pippin and Diamond story first--I'm at a loss! LOL Right now, I'm perusing a story in Anso's library, but looks like I'm coming straight back to yours as soon as I'm done with this one. :-) Fantastic! See you soon.

Author Reply: Sometimes I think I have way too much going on at once. *grin*

Well-crafted, as usual!

“I’m turning into a hobbit, already,” he muttered to himself.
(This was good for a chuckle in the middle of all the seriousness.)

Thanks!

Author Reply: I always think that must be the effect hobbits have on Big Folk. I mean they have that effect on *me*, and I've never actually met one (unless you count the Pepsi Saga, LOL!)
