Poison  by Marnie 12 Review(s)
French PonyReviewed Chapter: 1 on 3/24/2005
Yes, Eol is certainly an Elf with Issues, isn't he? Interesting -- here he sounds like he's halfway to being a psychopath. He can't quite acknowledge that Maeglin is a real person. He seems to see Maeglin more as a piece of property, not unlike a sword or an anvil, that he can possess or hide at will. Not at all hard to see why Maeglin wouldn't exactly be falling all over himself with love for Ada there. Eol does seem to see Aredhel as a person, though it's hard to tell what she sees in him. Though if he follows the psychopathic pattern, he's probaby very charming and has charisma in spades. The Ted Bundy of the Elves.

Author Reply: LOL! Elf with Issues :) I think you're right, and I like the idea too that he must have been very charming and charismatic - I think that's probably what Tolkien was getting at by saying that he was of a high and noble kindred. But, in his defence, thinking of your children as property is not always a sign of a psychopath - it was the normal attitude of fathers all over the ancient world.

I see Eol's attempting to kill Maeglin as being much on a par with Denethor's attempting to kill Faramir; a slightly twisted act of love.

Thanks for the review!

This is absolutely amazing, Marnie! It gave me chills, literally. Your portrayal of Eol is so thought-provoking, and so deep. He actually sounded a bit like Gollum at the end there - the effects of a twisted mind, I suppose. Eol does have serious problems; but you have helped me to see a bit more of his perspective. Thank you so much! This was wonderful!

Author Reply: Thanks, Nerdanel! I have a certain amount of sympathy for Eol simply out of reaction to the level of dislike the rest of the fandom has for him. There's no doubt that he is somewhat twisted and dangerous, but then so are a lot of the Silm elves, IMO ;)
