The Grey at the End of the World  by jodancingtree 108 Review(s)

Umm, yes well that was both inevitable, I think, and quite the most horrific thing I have read for a day or so.
Well done. So hard to write the hard stuff.
Much tragedy and war will follow that rending, I hie me to the next chapter with the hope of some resolution.
Takes a deep breath

Author Reply: Yeah, it was pretty horrific to write, and yet it's central to the whole tale. But there's still a long road a-winding...

And so darkness falls…how horrible and tragic, and yet inevitable. This will haunt Logi till the end of his days. And what will his bride think of him now that he has killed the Shining One?

On a lighter note, I did think Logi’s summary of Frodo’s quest was pretty funny…

Author Reply: Yes, Logi has destroyed his own happiness now. I'm glad you enjoyed his take on the Quest!

I like Osta and his restraining influence on Canohando and Malawen. Of course he still wants Logi dead, but his reaction is probably the norm for any society.

My favorite part though was Canohando's benediction: May Frodo and Arwen take him by the hand, wherever he is, and lead him into peace. After so long a time to still measure blessing by his long lost friends.

I'm very interested in seeing where you take this. Excellent work!

Author Reply: Thanks, Calime! Yes, Frodo and Arwen are still bright in Canohando's memory, even now - like an Elf, he does not forget. Thanks for reviewing!

How terrible and ignoble you have made Logi. Will we ever be able to forgive him?

Somehow I'm sure there will be redemption, but what a price. I'm sure too that the story is safe in your skilled hands. :-)

Author Reply: Whether we will be able to forgive him is one question - whether he'll ever forgive himself - hmmm...

Trouble for certain, and I can't help feeling worried for Haldar.

Eagerly awaiting the next!

Author Reply: Hi, Calime! I've been away, so I'm sorry I've taken so long to reply. Yeah, trouble is a-brewing - and Haldar better watch his back -
The next 2 chapters are with my dear friend Cuthalion for beta-ing, and I'll get them up as soon as she finishes. Thanks for reviewing!

Things sound so dire for the future of the Guardians and for the Shire itself, but Logi is in the most danger. Very nice build up of tension. It's so readable that it is hard to think of the details of how it is put together. Excellent writing.

Author Reply: Dear Calime (hanging head) - I'm so sorry to find I missed responding to so many of your kind reviews - forgive me? July was a truly frantic month - I was gone for two weeks, and the week between them, my son got married! I'm just now beginning to catch up a little. And I do so treasure your reviews, I feel awful that I didn't answer!

A very exciting and fast moving chapter, so onward I go!

Oh, you've got the hairs standing up already. It's not hard to imagine how Logi will find trouble, unless of course it finds him first.

I have never mentioned how much I like the detail you add in your footnotes. You capture a bit of realism through them that is very satisfying.

Looking forward to the next chapter.

Author Reply: Whoops, sorry to take so long answering this review - and thanks!

OK, I really shouldn’t be reading this…for one thing, I haven’t read “The Queen’s Orc” yet. But, well, I sort of peeked at it, and now here I am at Chapter 5. Very engrossing and beautifully written…no surprise there!

Middle Earth 3,000 years after the Ring War…what an intriguing concept! Sad, yes, but no more so than LOTR, really. Not too dark yet, but this part seems to be the calm before the storm. I have a weird theory about the barbarians…but don’t want to say what it is yet. If I’m right, I don’t want to spoil the surprise. And if I’m wrong, well, I’ll tell you later what it was! :)

Author Reply: Sorry to be so slow in replying, Inkling - I've been on vacation. I'm most curious about your theory on the barbarians - would you be willing to share it with me privately? jodancingtree@yahoo.com Because I do have my own idea who they are, of course, and I wonder if they strike you in that way.
Thanks for reviewing -

Oh! I'm impressed! I read the story of Canohando in a discontinous way some months ago. I found it.. way too poignant at times, and too Au for my taste, even if it is very very well conceived and written. I didn't review, then.. those were my lurking times... ;-)

But this one, years after those well known events, is great!!! The dwindling of the shire is so full of melancholy in its unavoidability, the fierce , loyal Canohando and his descendants fighting to avoid it, and this wild Logi, an Orc in a time that doesn't know about them! It simply got me. NO doubt your smooth style, the easy way you manage to describe events without stacking the chapter of dialogue helped too, as that kind of distant, enchanted pov to events that aren't mthycal but that did not happen yesterday... well, i'm hooked by this.

Only a suggestion. Even if I can guess what your summary points at... I think it is not the most accurate summary for engaging readers, and, come what may, I think that once you've come to know LOgi and his particularities, every darkness, as you say, will be counteracted by some ray of hope, some glimpse of grace!

At least I, for one, have signed for e-mail alert!

Author Reply: Hi, Perelleth! I'm so glad you're enjoying this one, and thanks for the heads' up on the summary - I'll have to try and make it a bit more engaging. I'm glad you signed on, anyway!
