Good Enough  by The Karenator 12 Review(s)

Hah! Under observation all the time. Have they worked out yet how the masters manage to be omniscient? I should think they were lucky, in a way, that the spiders arrived when they did - or our little bunch of novices might have encountered some rather more dangerous creatures. Daeron managed very well. He can cope in a crisis - even if giant, fierce, venomous, talking spiders to make him throw up afterwards. (I hope Belas doesn't look on that as something at which he can jeer, or he might end up with another punch on his elegant elven nose.) He is going to be shattered by Legolas having been bitten, though. They were all doing so well, too.

And poor Aldamir (and Seregon, too). He's in charge - and guilt has little to do with logic. Sometimes, those who should feel responsible just don't - they're too self-centred to see that anything is ever their fault. Others, among whom I suspect Aldamir ranks highly, take responsibility for things they could not possibly change. I loved Adar's words about his own experience and loss. And then - then, another bombshell, just when he is least able to cope with it! Though most of the information seems to be coming from Calith - and has yet to be confirmed by Elenna. I thought Tree's report was interesting. Maybe Elenna is a victim of stalking. After all, elves aren't supposed to involve themselves in frivolous hanky-panky - and she was pretty involved in that little session with Aldamir. It might well be that both parties are being manipulated here. But poor Aldamir doesn't need emotional angst just now.

Perhaps he needs to indulge in a little spider-slaying - and then talk to Naneth. (Or possibly Elenna.)

Author Reply: Although Daeron might have given the masters a little too much credit for knowing 'everything' that went on, he wasn't too far off the mark. The masters weren't about to leave the little whelps all alone in the forest, and besides, what they got to see when the kiddies thought no one was watching was very telling.

Overall, Daeron did well. Hopefully no one other than Aldamir noticed the trip to the woods. If Legolas didn't see it, and I doubt he was in shape to notice, then I don't think Daeron will ever bring it up. Let's hope that Belas was too busy being scared out his leggings to notice too.

Aldamir really did have a no-good-rotten day. Just when things looked like they could get no worse, Calith shows up on his doorstep. Something is not right here, but Aldamir is so shocked and hurt that I don't think he's realized that yet. And you're absolutely right that Elenna would not have been involved in hanky-panky as a recreational sport.

Aldamir does need to work out a little frustration on those spiders. The spiders have no idea....

Thanks for reading and reviewing, Bodkin.

First off, just so I have things straight: Thranduil and Lalaith have three sons, Aldamir, Erelas and Legolas, right? And Lalaith's late brother Tarondor was the father of Seregon and Daeron? Have I got everybody?

Ol' Aldamir is not having a very good day today, is he? It looks like he's learning the lesson our fencing coach taught last week: Your opponent moves. You can't always control it. You can only deal with it. It's a tough lesson to learn, even when the worst you can get out of it is a bruise. And Aldamir. . . well, one opponent moved and Legolas got spiderbit, and another opponent moved, and Elenna turns up engaged.

I do suspect that there's more to this betrothal than meets either the eye or the wounded ego. Elenna doesn't seem real thrilled about Calith, and she was an equal participant in the kissy-facing. In fact, the only person who seems to approve of this betrothal is Calith. And if Tree wasn't certain about it. . . we have not yet approached the bottom of this story.

What Aldamir probably needs right now is some TLC. But Naneth is too busy with Legolas, Adar is trying to be King in a tough spot, and Aldamir just keeps pushing away anyone else who tries to comfort him by pulling rank on them. Maybe soon he can find an hour or so to run off deep into the forest where no one can find him and have a good cry. He needs it.

And poor old Daeron! Though his worst nightmare didn't come true (he seems to be physically fine), his second worst nightmare happened, as he watched his cousin and best friend collapse from spiderbite. This isn't going to improve his fear of spiders any. Maybe he should go and have that cry with Aldamir. It'd do them both good.

Author Reply: Yep, you've got the family tree down pat.

Aldamir is eaten up with guilt about Legolas (all the novices, for that matter) and heartbroken about Elenna. I agree that this has been a bad day. He is the sort of person who figures the buck stops with him. When things get out of his control, he doesn't quite know how to handle it internally. But like Thranduil reminded him, he's young in age and young in his duty. Accepting that bad things happen probably will never get any easier, but hopefully, he won't blame himself so much when they do.

Good observation about Elenna's willingness to get 'involved' with Aldamir. Calith is one happy little camper at the moment. And possibly the only one. Tree knows a lot about the villagers and if I were Aldamir, I'd listen to him.

Not only is everyone too busy to comfort Aldamir, he's so hardheaded that he doesn't want anyone to. That's not to mention that he's absolutely humiliated. He gave his heart and nearly his body to this girl, only to find out that he's been deceived. Heap the spider incident on top of that and it's a wonder he hasn't just gone to the lowest levels of the stronghold and hidden.

Daeron managed to survive the attack, but you're right that he was just blown away that Legolas was bitten. He feels sicker than he did when he ate too much aewbas. He might just join Aldamir in the cellar. First, he'd have to make sure there were no spiders there.

Thanks for the review. I appreciate you taking the time. It's always a pleasure to hear from you.
