An Act of Desperation  by Shieldmaiden of Rohan 28 Review(s)

Ah. Finally! Lovebirds cuddling and kissing on the walls. Of course there were cheers! The whole city will probably know by the next day. Hee!

It seems like Eowyn is still holding back, emotionally and physically. The whole business has probably been something of a shock to the poor girl. I wonder what Eomer's first reaction will be...

Wake up and smell the tea, Eowyn! You're in love, Faramir's in love; and you need to talk to each other rather than moping in your respective chambers.

Silly woman. Silly guy. At least I know it will all work out!

I am loving this, you are doing a wonderful job! I cannot believe how fast you are updating it though. I can't keep up! :) I had to sit down and give you a quick review to encourage you on what a wonderful job you are doing. Now I see you have another story out as well. Fun for me. Oh in this chapter speficially my heart just broke for Eowyn (like it always does) when she says that to Aragorn about how she feels for him. But then to have Elladan overhear and to talk to him about it! Yikes!!! But at least then she knew the truth about the situation - I always felt like that would have been easier to accept. Anyway, wonderful story.

Author Reply: Well, the truth about the quick updating is that I've been posting this story on another fanfic site for over a year now, so there's 23 chapters completed so far. So I've been able to get several chapters up at a shot--I definitely couldn't get it up this quickly if I was writing it now!!

My thought on the Elladan thing was that I wanted her to know the truth about it before Aragorn left--since Tolkien never said that he told her, I needed a third party to intervene. I'm evil like that, I guess. :D

The famous first meeting of Faramir and Eowyn - be still, my beating heart! You write it well. She's still scarred and gunshy, but there are indications that she's very impressed by him.

Author Reply: Oh, good. It's definitely one of those things in the book that makes me swoony, so I didn't want to lose that. :) And it always seemed to me that, even though his immediately waxing poetic threw her for a loop, she was intrigued by him in spite of herself.

Aw, Faramir and Eowyn make such a sweet couple, even though the silly woman doesn't yet realize it...Nice chapter; gave me a chilly-then-warm 'n'' fuzzy vibe.

Author Reply: Ok, I'm assuming the "chilly" isn't a totally bad thing, since it ended up warm & fuzzy. ;) And I still maintain that she's nuts. Oh well... makes it better when she finally does get together with him, I suppose.
And I appreciate you being willing to review this again, even though you've already read it all. I'm gradually working on getting the entire thing to date on this site (and also hoping that reading over it again in the process will get my brain ready for writing the next chapter...)

Like your one chapter stories, this is also a wonderful story and I'm looking forward to more. I loved chapter 2 when Theodred was teaching Eowyn how to fight and then her fight with Eomer. Nicely done! The utter despair that Eowyn must have felt there. I've always felt bad for her, not just because of all of the stuff she went through with Grima and dealing with the king and feeling forced then to go with to the battle, etc. But also because of her total aloneness as a woman in a totally male dominated society like that. Brothers and cousins are great, but not having a mother or sisters would be so difficult. Anyway, great 3 chapters here at the start and I'm looking forward to more!

Author Reply: I have to admit that I tend to think of Eowyn as a bit more of a tomboy... she'd have to be, growing up in such a male-dominated society. And I wouldn't know about the sisters, since I don't have any, but I do think it would be difficult for her to grow up without much of any female influence.
I'm glad you liked the fight, it was fun to write. And I'll try to get some more up soon! Thanks!

Good job on the flashback to Theodred's teaching little Eowyn to fight. It felt very real.

And the ending caught Eowyn's desolation very well; she's the only one left, left behind with a failing King in a dark, doom-ridden Hall. Brrr! Where's Beowulf when you need him? I can see why Aragorn is going to really seem like the answer to her prayers and the brightest Knight-In-Shining-Armor a sorrowful young woman could imagine - no way will she see the man behind the hero.

Author Reply: I couldn't resist the flashback... poor Theodred got completely shafted in LotR. (I think I've been around Galenmir too long in Fandom.)

>>I can see why Aragorn is going to really seem like the answer to her prayers and the brightest Knight-In-Shining-Armor a sorrowful young woman could imagine...

Good. That means the setup is working. :D

Just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your faithful, well-thought out reviews. :)

I loved Eowyn's thinking, after Eomer has expressed his inability to stand by and do nothing, that he can't do what she has to do every day. It shows how worn Eowyn is by the years of standing by while the king and realm declines and Grima's influence grows stronger. Eomer, being a typical man (self-absorbed, despite his fundamentally good heart), doesn't understand that Eowyn would find helplessness as intolerable a burden as he does.

Author Reply: Seems like I keep running into you at every fanfic site I go to. :)

To continue with what you said, I don't think that Eomer would really understand helplessness to the extent that she would to begin with anyway; even though he couldn't stop Theodred from dying, he still at least has the option to go out and fight what's happening.

And just so you know, since I know you've read this before...this version is probably going to be a bit different than the one you've seen at ff.net.... I've been doing a lot of revising lately. I've been putting the revisions up at ff.net too, but this version is hopefully a lot cleaner and closer to Tolkien's style (since this chapter was the first fanfic thing I ever wrote, I'd like to think I got a little better since then...)
