| One of the interesting things in this chapter is that we see that Denethor feels affection for his sister. I like that because he's so withdrawn in other ways that we might think he was incapable of it. He's really in a tough position, given what is expected of him and what would make him happy. Actually, what would make him happy? I'm making myself sad thinking about him. Author Reply: One of the interesting things in this chapter is that we see that Denethor feels affection for his sister. I like that because he's so withdrawn in other ways that we might think he was incapable of it. My view of Denethor is that he is someone who is capable of very strong emotion (witness his, huh, "performance" in the Pyre chapter) but feels rather intimidated by it because he takes things very seriously and very personally. So he is indrawn not just because he is introverted by nature, but also because that's what allows him to function. When he is forced by circumstances to climb out of his shell and deal with very intense emotions, he falls to pieces, as we see in canon. He's really in a tough position, given what is expected of him and what would make him happy. Actually, what would make him happy? I think that, at this point in time, he'd just be happy to have Stewardship over Gondor, be left to manage his life and country in peace, and have Sauron, Thorongil and Gandalf make a joint trip into the Void. Nothing much, really. *g* I'm making myself sad thinking about him. Oh dear. I hope the rest of the story is less saddening; I'm afraid further fics in the series are rather bleak, but I have to blame Tolkien for that. *g* Thanks once again for reading and reviewing. -----Anna | |

| What an interesting Denethor. The idea of him being in love with Minas Tirith is wonderful. It fits with so many of the ways in which we know he went wrong, although he's not an evil man. Your Finduilas is fascinating too. I like the contrast you're drawing between life in Minas Tirith and Dol Amroth. He must have seemed like a challenge to her. It has always been my reading of the text that Denethor values and cherishes his homeland above all else, and I wanted to show this in the fic. Your Finduilas is fascinating too. Well, I think that, for Denethor to be in love with her (as is stated in the canon), she's rather have to be! I'm so glad people like her characterisation in the story... He must have seemed like a challenge to her. The passing allusions to Thorongil are also well done. You'll learn more about what Finduilas thinks of Denethor in Chapter 5, and there's also further ado about Thorongil.
