This is really beginning to make some sense out of an episode that I think JRRT left unexplained on purpose. You seem to be covering all the bases. Why did he seemingly leave Frodo alone? Why the ritual garb for the other three? Why did Merry seem to have knowledge of the past? (And on that last one, I have a theory of my own. Doesn't contradict yours, but it makes sense of some things that happen to him later.) This is an amazing gap-filler.

I love how Sam was considered worthy of respect equal to that given to Merry and Pippin. If only he knew---I can just see his blushes and hear his stammering!

Ooo, this is good. You handled the dream very well. It made sense. Now that's got me thinking about the long-term affects it's going to have on poor Merry. Very few have ever written about his dreams about this insident. Of course, I'm always wondering about my sweet Pippin. How is he going to be affected by this event? You're doing "creepy" quite nicely. Connie B.

Shirebound, This is just BRILLIANT! I am just loving your descriptions...and your take on the whys and wherefores of this particular part of the book. SO many questions it brings up (and never answers) - thanks for tackling some of them. I love that the wight seems to think they are soldiers of some kind. I suppose that he can't fathom that simple devotion (rather than militant training) drives these small ones to protect Frodo. Wonderful!

again you have intrigued me with this story. "Apparently" is right. The ceremony description was breathtaking and am finding myself wanting to read that chapter of FOTR again, but your thoughts are just a bit more detailing and with depth I am sure if J.R.R. Tolkien were alive would just have to absoloutely have to agree with and be intrigued as well. Here's looking to your next posting.

This is as if Tolkien had written it himself! Such detail and so true to the story! I love that how you explained how Merry got his thoughts that made him say those strange things when waking up and the detail about their clothing and the things he found in them - like the key to the gate. Chillingly Brilliant!

It's getting creepier and creepier, but better and better. The details of the wight's mind, how he analyzed the hobbits and tried to classify them, understand them in his own terms, very fascinating! And the way he judged the hobbits, to determine whether they're worthy of being sacrificed, and the ritual itself, which explained why the hobbits woke up wearing jewelries, are extremely well-written, inventive, and compelling. I love the way you laid out everything here: why the wight kept Frodo untouched, why Merry was having dreams. This chapter is simply brilliant!
