Time's Turnings  by daw the minstrel 27 Review(s)

Another amazing chapter where do I start?
Maltanaur and Beliond must find it hard being keepers as it must isolate them from other elves and it is good to see them interacting and 'supporting' their own charges reputations.
The market scene in fact the whole arrival in town was so fascinating looking at it through the eyes of someone who has never experienced anything quite like it before. Legolas's senses were certainly assaulted by sound and smell as well as the newness of everything and I did not like the herb seller at all!
Mother hen Beliond is going to have his work cut out, an inn! will Legolas be able to resist going to look now he has been told not to?
Beliond's view on his charges inexperience begin to have new meaning now and I think we may yet have problems with Tavor, I suspect even Elian is beginning to think he was not a good choice for the brats new mount
Can't wait to read what happens next
Oh and the ringing of bells and juggling were a real treat too

Author Reply: I wrote the first part of this chapter very late in creating it, but I decided I shouldn't waste an opportunity to put the two keepers together. They're just not there very often. And I think they would understand one another as no one else would understand them.

And I really wanted to get Dale right. I've always thought it sounded like a wonderful town - Elrond talks about its "merry bells." And I thought this was a good opportunity to have Legolas learn a little about Men.

Beliond is such a nana! It's a good nickname for him. I think he needs to back off a little though. He doesn't want this surrogate "son" to die as his did.

I really liked the start of this chapter, with the two keepers discussing their charges. It's rare to see them together like this. I like the way that each can criticise his own charge, but takes offence if the other does!

The description of Dale was great - so vivid. Eilian is wonderful, turning on the charm and being his father's son perfectly. And Beliond! Who'd have thought it? Not that he has the skill - it seems an Elven sort of thing - but that he would perform in a crowded marketplace! I liked the hard-to-explain injuries - is that the voice of experience, Legolas?

The Easterling - were any left of those who abducted Legolas? Or was it so long ago that they are all dead anyway? I know that Thranduil killed Karik.

Author Reply: The one who abducted Legolas are all dead. This one just reminded Legolas of them. When I was working on back story for Beliond, I decided he had spied on men in the east. Being a spy would suit his loner personality, I think. Now the juggling just kind of came to me. It made me laugh to think of Beliond doing it. He just couldn't resist showing the men how to do it right and maybe also showing off a little for Legolas. Bad spy!

I wrote that scene between Beliond and Maltanaur late in the creation of this chapter. It just occurred to me that I shouldn't waste an opportunity to show them together because, as you say, they're together so seldom.

Beliond juggling???? You sure do know how to surprise your loyal readers...

Loved the chapter! The interaction of the two keepers was perfect... Beliond is determined that he will not lose another young one... and Maltanaur has been doing his job so long, he has gained some distance from his early struggles with Eilian...

Your description of Dale was terrific! I could hear and see and smell it...

Eilian is such a charmer!

Balchoth are bad news...

But -- Beliond juggling???? (It was so great letting Legolas see and react to that... maybe he'll even see Beliond as a real person some day...)

Author Reply: Beliond kind of surprised me too. I was trying to picture the street scene and thought of a juggler and then I thought that maybe elves wouldn't be so impresssed by that. And then Beliond just stepped up and said, "You're blankety right we aren't impressed, missy. Give me the blankety blank knives and I'll show you some blankety juggling." And that's how it happened. :-)

Beliond is indeed determined he's not going to lose another young one. Thranduil knew that no one would watch over Legolas with more care than Beliond. But I think he also knew that it was time for Beliond to come in out of the cold, so to speak. He needs to make some contacts again.

humm the easterling thing should be interesting, and I love how protective Beliond is of Legolas. Just wanted to tell you I am so enjoying this story and very excited to see what you have in store for us all!

Author Reply: Glad you're enjoying it! I'm not so sure Legolas loves how protective Beliond is of him, despite the fact that it's amusing for us to watch. As a matter of fact, I think 'nana' is the right nickname. "Stay close to me in the marketplace." Can't you just picture a mommy saying that to her six-year-old? LOL

What a colourful chapter! I felt like I was in Dale myself as you described the place so vividly. I had to laugh at Legolas' reaction. He was probably having a serious case of senses overload trying to take in everything at once. And his reaction to men's shortcomings were highly amusing - they can't tell time by themselves? (yes, we need our digital clocks and watches); juggling ball is considered a talent? (not all of us have elven reflexes). It was nice to see Beliond loosening up a bit. You keeping giving us glimpses of his colourful background. I am hoping that someday you will give us the whole picture.

I am beginning to feel excitement building up. Hope to see the next chapter soon.

Author Reply: Thank you. I was just telling Meckinock (below) that I'm glad the description of Dale came off. I don't usually use much description but I've always liked the sound of Dale and wanted it to be a place that looked like it was fun to go to. But for elves, as you say, that might be sensory overload. They like the woods, not the noisy, overdone stuff Men use to stimluate themselves.

Beliond the Juggler just sort of happened. I suddenly realized that elves would probably be pretty good at juggling and Beliond was an irresistable choice to do it.

Oh, Daw, what a fun chapter! Starting with the keepers' bonding session. For some reason I just love Maltanaur and Beliond together. Your descriptions of Dale were wonderful - from the visual layout to the smells and sounds and bustle of market day. The scene of the four elves making their way through the crowded streets was wonderfully vibrant and detailed. I loved - LOVED - how Beliond's grumpy admonishments about keeping a low profile got turned on their head - Beliond, the juggler! Who knew he had it in him? And Legolas's recollection of the time Eilian juggled six knives made me laugh. This chapter was just the best.

Author Reply: I like Maltanaur and Beliond together too. When they're together, I feel sorry for Beliond and really love Maltanaur. He's such a perceptive guy. And Beliond needs that. He tends to be a loner anyway and losing his family pushed that tendency to an extreme. Thranduil was a clever king to make his Legolas's guard.

And I'm glad Dale was vivid. Elrond talks about the "merry bells of Dale" and that's always made it sound like an attractive place to me. I'm not usually good with descriptions but I did want Dale to come alive. So I was thinking about street scenes and thought about a juggler and then I realized that elves might not be so impressed by a juggler! Beliond just sort of stepped front and center.

I agree with Beliond. I do not like this merchant. He seems awfully interested in Legolas, as though he recognizes him (or perhaps recognized the golden hair.)

Author Reply: The merchant is a little suspicious looking, but then Beliond is a suspicious kind of guy. :-) I love him, I do.
