Dancing in the Darkness  by Marnie 12 Review(s)

'there was no-one left, but him, who could tell them of the Night.' That is so sad - (although, I suppose, it is rather a long time ago). I hope he teaches them to love the echo of the Night that is left in the night.

'all your ancestors back into legends' - that's not taking them back very far, though, is it? (Although, when I was looking at the Family Tree - only one person - Celebrian - was born in the Second Age. EVERYBODY ELSE - absolutely everybody, was born in or before the First Age. What a time scale.)

'Celebrian had still enough life in her to run along Rivendell's balustrades when she thought no one important was looking, why could Elrond not celebrate sometimes, like his subjects, and leave off rule for a night?' Poor Elrond - I don't think he ever had the chance to learn 'light-hearted'. Celebrian and the elflings are the best chance for getting through to the serious, dutiful lord and showing him a bit of fun. I'd love to see this descendant of Luthien shedding his clothes and dancing in the night. (And why isn't the grandson of the Nandor king dancing?)

Dwarves - corrupted by the Silmaril in the remaking of the Nauglamir. Place the blame on the cursed jewel, Celeborn, where it belongs. Love of it did its best to corrupt Elu as well. Succeeded, too. (Listening to too much Silmarillion at the moment.)

Sorry to review again so quickly, but I JUST WANTED TO, OK?

Quite OK with me! Wonderful, in fact :)

When I was writing that sentance about 'no one left to tell them of the Night' it occurred to me that when Frodo sees Arwen come to marry Aragorn, he says something like 'now not only day shall be beloved, but night too should be blessed and free of fear' - something like that. It surprised me to think of one of Elrond's children representing the blessed night, but really it shouldn't have done, should it!

No, I don't think that life with Maglor and Maedhros would ever have been a bundle of laughs :) And Celeborn is not dancing, in order to spare the tender sensibilities of Elrond's advisors.

Ooh, and you would never get Celeborn to agree that any of the blame lay with Elu - Tolkien says as much. Perhaps - like Beren and Luthien, or the Laegrim who got it back from the dwarves and handed it over to Thingol without any kind of trouble - he just didn't see the attraction of it, and therefore was unable to place the blame on the Silmaril? There do seem to have been more people unaffected by its power than affected.

On the other hand, there's a case to be made for him saying; 'Other than wanting to keep the dowry his son in law and daughter had gone through hell to bring him, refusing to give it up to armed terrorists at his gate, what exactly *did* Elu do wrong?' He was a king, and they don't respond well to threats. If the Sons of Feanor had tried *asking politely*, things might have been different - who knows?

Sorry about the essay back! Many thanks for *two* reviews - it made my day :)

Author Reply: Hm, and I'm also thinking that it wasn't really the murder that he holds against the dwarves (well - he might at least be able to understand that). It was the entire dwarf army turned up on the doorstep and massacred everyone without even asking for their version of what had happened. You would have hoped that millenia of friendship would have counted for more than that.

What a lovely story - I do like to see Elrohir and Elladan being encouraged to look at one of the many other sides of their heritage. After all, they are only (around) 3/32nds Noldor, so why should it dominate their upbringing! The only trouble of such a mixed background is that they need to be experts in so many different fields - still they have plenty of centuries to get to know it all.

"You're not having a mystic moment, are you?" Hah! Celebrian has the teasing cynicism of her father! Celebrian and Celeborn - the ego-deflators of the family.

So Celeborn's mother is Nimwen and his uncle is Denethor and they are the offspring of Denweg, aka Lenwe, king of the Silvan Elves - thus making the twins descendants of Denweg of the Silvan Elves as well as everybody else, yes? (I note that the fish painting comes naturally to them.)

You can tell Celeborn is on a wife-free holiday - he is really enjoying putting cats and pigeons together.

I hoped there would be a chapter 2 - you haven't got them dancing yet!

Author Reply: Thanks, Bodkin! I'm surprised (and delighted) that anyone would read a story about Denweg and Denethor. It was so long, and I was sure no one would like it, so I'm very happy indeed :)

LOL! Yes, Celeborn is making the most of his time away from home, though he's still *slightly* restrained by not wanting to embarrass Elrond too much. I've always liked the idea that Celebrian had inherited more than just her hair from her father. I don't know, but I feel that Elrond probably needs someone to winkle him out of the library every so often and get him to live in the present.

There will be a chapter two - it's very nearly finished, but I need to check it and tweak it a bit first.
