Glorious Summer  by daw the minstrel 24 Review(s)

Oh, Daw! Another cliff hanger. Poor Legolas, I can imagine his growing shock when he realised that if Maltanaur was around, Eilian probably was too, and that he had to be in the cottage with the men.

Eilian is still very cool, despite his fear for Celuwen. He's thinking very clearly, and proving what a very good commander he is. I hope he and Celuwen come out of this unscathed.

Author Reply: It took me a while to remember that Legolas didn't know that Eilian was at the settlement. And finding Maltanaur must have been disturbing.

Eilian is good at reading people, even people like these Men, and he has a lot of experience that's telling him exactly where danger and potential advantages lie. We'll have to see if he gets a chance to use what he's learned.

Thank you for posting so quickly, but why am I still holding my breath?

A very tense chapter that had me sitting on the edge of my chair throughout. As much as Solith is an irritating fool, I cringed when he got bashed on the head, especially in front of Celuwen. I wonder if there were any mixed feelings going through Eilian at that moment. Probably not. He is too good a warrior to get any satisfaction out of anyone under his protection getting hurt.

Legolas to the rescue! Eilian must be used to getting bailed out by his baby brother after this little adventure. Am I the only one to be feeling maternal pride on how well Legolas is conducting himself?

Author Reply: Oh good. I wanted this scary because I don't do torture. I have to rely on fear. :-) And I meant for things to be very scary in Solith's cottage, poor Elves. Eilian is wily though. He can read this situation and is arming himself with information.

I am so glad you are reacting that way to Legolas. I wanted him to grow in this story and I think he is doing very well.

Something's a little weird here. And no, I'm not referring to the hostage situation. That's clearly not a normal state of being for the Elves, I know that. The strange thing is, how did the settlers miss the Men's invasion? There was a fight, Maltanaur (not an easy mark) got sklonked, the settlement leader got stabbed in a place that produces a slow and painful death -- shouldn't there have been some noise? They might be clueless settlers, but they're presumably not deaf. And they're Elves. Superior hearing and all that jazz. Gotta wonder what they thought was going on Chez Sólith.

All that aside, Eilian is doing marvelously in a tight spot. He's keeping his eyes and ears open and is doing nothing to cause things to erupt further. He's even announcing sudden moves, bless his warrior's soul. Just the thing they used to tell pilots to do when they got hijacked. (This was in the days when all the hijackers wanted was to go to Cuba or something like that.)

You know, Maltanaur is a nice guy, but he seems like an awfully ineffective keeper. He doesn't ever seem to be around when Eilian is in trouble, and he goes and gets himself sklonked.

But fortunately, little bro is on the ball here and in command. He's got a good sense of command, getting the settlers to help without alarming them unduly. All is in good hands now that Legolas is here.

Author Reply: I thought of that, French Pony, but I figured the settlement Elves's cottages would be thinly scattered to start with, and during the day they'd be off about their business. So I didn't think people would be around. I figure these folks like their privacy and don't snoop around one another much. I think it would be easier to miss a few Men than a lot, and the Elves had no reason to fear the Men anyway. Legolas and Eilian are both more sensitive to the woods than other Elves are (in my little world). And truly, if a wounded Man showed up at the door of Isiwen's cottage, I think her first impulse would be to help. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. :-)

Eilian is clever and very perceptive about people. He can read these Men, and right now they're scaring him to his toes.

Daw, are you crazy? This cliff hanger is even worse than the last one! Could you possibly think of anything that might make this more tense? This chapter was so scary. Eilian must be one hell of a steady elf (which he certainly would be after hundreds of years in the Southern Patrol). Anyone else would be blubbering on the floor. And Celuwen and Isiwen are just wonders. I cannot imagine what plan Legolas could come up with to deal with this. Especially with the stupid settlers insisting on poking their noses in. I feel so sorry for him. What a first command. This is so great. Post quickly! PLeeeease!

Author Reply: I tried to make it tense! I don't get too many chances to do this kind of thing, and I don't like torture, so I had to go with terror. Eilian is concentrating very hard on getting his wife and her family out of here alive. He's a clever fighter though, and he's good at reading people, so I thought he'd be able to see the Men's weaknesses etc.

Legolas is going to get a chance to show his leadership, his quality, if you will. :-)
