My Brother's Keeper  by daw the minstrel 197 Review(s)

As always I look forward to any story you write in this wonderful universe you have created that compliments Tolkien's works so well. :)

That Turgon, silly Elfling that he always is, really shouldn't try to encourage misbehavior in his friends. I WISH he could see that it causes consequences that are not only inopportune and unfortunate, but downright lethal too. I STILL wish he had learned better too, the annoyingly lovable twit! :(

Poor Legolas, missing Eilian when they've only just gotten him back in the family quarters. *shaking my head*

This is a very good start and I look forward to reading more. *vbg*

Author Reply: Turgon is such a problem. He's Thranduil's worst nightmare as a friend for Legolas. And I don't imagine Penntalion looks forward to having Turgon in his class either. Now Turgon's tutor is probably rejoicing that he no longer has to put up with him, although we can see that he has way too much free time on his hands.

Yeah! A new story, and a young Legolas story at that! (thank you! thank you!)

It's off to a good start, with possibilities sprouting left and right and they all lead to trouble for Legolas and friends. As much as I have missed Turgon, I have to admit that he is a little devil, a parent's worst nightmare, but then his parents are probabl other parents' nightmare as well. Somebody should give those parents of his a good shake.

Pushups and running laps? Ouch, sounds like my workout at the gym, though I am sure the elflings are much more resilient than me.

Legolas' lesson was very interesting. So many what ifs concerning Isildur's actions and so many possibilities in retrospect, but no clear cut answer. Rather reflective of our own modern day society, isn't it?

Author Reply: I am excited to be getting back to adolescent Legolas again. And you are so right about Turgon. I'm fond of the kid, but I can see why Thranduil is appalled by Legolas's friendship with him.

My own gym workout is aerobics. One of my students takes karate and she told me that her instructor makes them do push ups for the whole class if someone acts up. Sounded horrible to me!

It is interesting to think about Isildur. And yes, no clear cut answers for Legolas or for us.

I am so happy to see a new story, and especially an adolescent Legolas story. It's been a long time since we visited with Legolas as an adolescent, this will be fun!

Your story is *just* what I need this week-I take my oldest daughter to Georgia Tech University on Friday. My first baby off to college to study engineering. Where did the time go? Big sigh. I needed a "pick-me-up" this week and your story is just the thing!

Thanks for always writing wonderful, wonderful stories that we all enjoy so much!

Author Reply: That's a tough moment, Naneth. I remember sending my son off to college (engineering school at Michigan) and it felt an awful lot like sending him off to kindergarten. I cried then too.

I haven't written about adolescent Legolas in months and months and I'm looking forward to it.

Off to an intriguing beginning, as it always the case with you. Eilian seems in need of a good deal of brotherly keeping. Terrific first chapter! :-D

Author Reply: Thank you, Karri. Legolas is really concerned about Eilian. He loves the not-always-sensible guy.

Oh, good, a new story. I really needed one, too. I'm moving to Grad School Town on Monday, and I've been packing all day and my apartment is a mess, and all my books are packed, and I've been living on bread, jam and cold pizza, and I've had a headache all day today, but there is another story now, and somehow that makes it all a little better.

Uh-huh, I've definitely been on the receiving end of "someone in this class has done wrong, so all will be punished." It's not fun, but it's definitely better than, "Oh Legolas, surely you could tell us who did it, you responsible King's son, you." That's just evil, and I'm glad that Penntalion has enough sense not to make schoolboys rat each other out. I will admit to subscribing wholeheartedly to schoolkid omertá, and I do feel for the boys.

So Turgon's dropped out of school, has he? Yup, he's the type. If T-shirts and cigarettes were available in Mirkwood, he'd probably be running around with a pack of the latter rolled up in the sleeve of the former. Oh dear. Now I'll have to live with the image of Turgon the Greaser.

And it looks like Eilian is having one of his bad spells. Shadow sickness is such a hard thing to deal with, and poor old Eilian is just crying out for help there, but it seems that only Legolas recognizes that, and he's the family member with the least ability to do anything about it. Thranduil's big blind spot seems to be his kids -- he gets so wrapped up in what he expects them to be that he sometimes can't see what they are at the moment. The all-black outfit was a big, loud-and-clear signal, but I'll bet it looked so smashing on Eilian that the message was completely lost. And it's a shame, because we know that Thranduil's people-reading skills aren't stunted at all -- his dealings with petitioners indicate that he can read body language very well, but he just can't see distress in his kids.

I suppose a lot of parents are like that. Turgon's certainly are, and I think we are all very happy that Thranduil is nowhere near as slow on the uptake as Turgon's parents.

Author Reply: Moving is truly an ordeal. Every time we've done it, I've sworn I will never do it again. But you will have a lot of fun (and some pain) in graduate school.

One of my grad students has studied karate for years and she told me that she has sometimes been in classes where they did push ups for the whole hour because someone had done something bad. That's what I was thinking of here. I'm glad that none of them told on one another in this case.

I laughed at the James Dean version of Turgon. He is just Thranduil's nightmare incarnate.

Eilian does appear to be having problems.

A new story, yay! I enjoyed the first chapter. I find myself tolerant of Turgon as an elfling but not as an adolescent. Possibley because I am one myself and even I can recognize when he's being stupid. Of course, more often than not it's his parents who tick me off. I can see why Legolas uses Annael's parents to judge Thranduil's parenting (i.e. the protectiveness).

I enjoyed the scene with Galeril. History is one of my many loves and I've always wondered how elves would teach it. Very interesting essay assignment. Legolas is such a good person. My answer would have been to shove Isildur into the volcano. Of course, that's a purely academic question without the morals, friendship, and soldiers who might object to their captain being lavafied calculated into it. Oh and that endorphin plant is very interesting. Very interesting in deed. Hmmm and Eilian is taking it. And it's apparently addictive for some. Is that a movement in the plot I sense?

I'll stop my theorizing. Off to a very good start.

Author Reply: Thank you, Alice. I love starting new stories.

I think you may be better at recognizing stupidity than Turgon is because, while you are an adolescent, you are a *female* adolescent. :-) And you are so right that it's his parents who haven't a clue. But Annael's parents are good parents. Of course, Legolas is in a particularly difficult position as Thranduil's son.

Legolas has that elven horror of killing (although, actually, I need to remember that Elves committed quite a bit of slaughter in the Silmarillion). And I thought that Legolas was old enough that he might be learning some political and historical stuff that would be particularly valuable for a king's son (and a future member of the Fellowship).

I was very excited to see a new story from you Daw! I have always loved reading your stories of Legolas at this age, maybe perhaps I'm at that age. Turgon always was trouble waiting to happen wasn't he? It is very interesting to Galelas and Isendir before they became novices. Legolas' take on Isildur is very interesting and I have a very nagging thought that Eilian is or is about to become addicted to Dangwath. Can't wait to read more! ~Laura

Author Reply: First review of new story! Yay!

I hope this story seems realistic to you, Laura, because it's been a while since I've been an adolescent. :-)

Turgon makes me sad because he's not only trouble waiting to happen; he's a tragedy waiting to happen.

I thought that Legolas was old enough that his tutor would be trying to get him to think about politics and history. He's the son of a king after all. This is stuff he needs to think about. And some day, he'll be glad he did when he has to save Middle-earth.
