Captain Thorongil and The Corsairs  by Lindorien 49 Review(s)
LindeleaReviewed Chapter: 2 on 7/7/2004
Am reading out of order, but happy enough with chapter 2 by itself. I think I caught the gist pretty quickly (though I didn't realise that was one of *his* names...)

"He was drunk when he wrote it.” “Perhaps not drunk enough.”
Very nice exchange. True to life.
Never annoy the cook! I will have to teach that young man far more than sword fighting before we travel much further.
Odd, you'd think a hobbit would have known this already.

Oh yes, plenty of trees today. It is not raining. It will rain tonight, while we walk. It will pour and pour and pour and I will spend half my time dragging the hobbits out of the muck and the other half regaining my own feet before we capitulate and I again draw Blanket Duty. For by then, there will be no trees. If we desire good weather, we must seek to stay near trees.
Boromir and irony go so well together.

Pippin is young, but no fool. Not much of one anyway. At least, not most of the time.
Ah, subtlety.

Yes, it is 4 a.m. Why? I haven't the faintest.

Author Reply: Subtlety - one tries.

Yes - Boromir and irony. I read it in the Caradhras pasage all the malarky about bringing wood or not to bring wood and whether or not to light a fire. I am THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD who reads Boromir as having a sense of humor with that passage. My own personal interpretation. My own little world.

lalalala

Yes - I'd think Pippin would know not to upset the cook, but I fear Pippin begins to take Sam for granted. So like youth, you know. They just figure if they show up at 6 o'clock, something looking like dinner will be sitting on the table...

Hope you are feeling better. I'm glad you like this. Lindorien

“It’s nice to hear a song which merely entertains and does not require my deep consideration,”

*more mufflesnortchuckle*

*firmly plants herself in the Scruffy Ranger camp* Hmph.

This is quite possibly the funniest thing I have read in a long time. :D

Author Reply: This is quite possibly the funniest thing I have read in a long time. :D

Oh dear, Sphinx! Methinks thou needst to get thyself out more! Chapter 3 is coming up. That's 'cause I have a deadline. So, of course, I'm writing chapter 3 instead.

“How long will it last, do you think, Aragorn?” Boromir asked.

“Until it’s over,” intoned the Ranger.

I'll presume that means you like it and you're not simply choking on a piece of pretzel? Lindorien

whatever was Strider up too, while he was Thorongil, it has come back to haunt him, and Gandalf is not helping one bit. Wonder how long it will be before he snaps and Boramir ends up in a nearby stream, with hopes of Boramir getting a sore throat.
looking forward to more

Author Reply: Ah yes, well one's past does tend to step up to meet one. The problem Strider has is this: whether he did anything or not, whatever he did or did not do has passed into legend. He's DEFINITELY got a problem. Lindorien

Wow, that update was quick! And equally funny! But I do so not envy Aragorn. Having his heroic deeds spun into tales of such questionable taste, even though the last one was spun by Faramir himself. Even if the latter was drunk. And I doubt that Boromir will tolerate Aragorn insulting his brother for long, so Aragorn better watch his tongue. But I agree with you that it was Aragorn who urged Boromir into singing a song, so he'll have to live with it. Though I must admit that I love to see him cringe Now I am curious as to what Gandalf will have to say in that matter ...

Author Reply: Yeah, the update was quick because I had a bunch of other stuff to do. I write more fics when I've other things to do. Well, here's the way I see it. Thorongil is legendary, but Denethor wasn't very crazy about him. So maybe Denethor gives a little of the questionable taste a push? Besides, what do soldiers like to talk and sing about? GIRLS! Battles are fine, but they battle all the time. They want to talk about GIRLS! I like seeing Aragorn cringe to. So often its poor Boromir on the wrong end of the stick. If I were gandalf, I'd keep REAL quiet...Lindorien

Oh, this is just too much fun!! Poor Aragorn... "...but it’s taken hold and is a favorite in the taverns. Aragorn looked to him sharply, his face paling." I can just see him visualizng Arwen's reaction to the song... Why do I have a feeling he'll be having a few words with Faramir at some point in the future regarding future compositions :) I keep wondering when Gandalf is going to throw in his 2 cents too...

I can't wait to read the next!!

Author Reply: hi Elle! Welcome aboard! There's always another sailing in LindorienLand. I've a feeling Aragorn will be keeping Arwen out of the pubs. He will have all records regarding Thorongil removed from the libraries and stricken from the records. I don't know about Gandalf. He does seem to be enjoying all this, doesn't he? I'm glad your reading and enjoying. Hope this continues to please. Lindorien

You are a very wicked lady....How long are you going to go on making poor Aragorn squirm!!!

I like your portrayal of the Hobbits...snarky and irritable is a welcome and believable change from the way they are often portrayed

Author Reply: I am going to make poor Aragorn squirm until I figure out how to end this thing. If you have any ideas, email them to me. It seems I'm very good at starting trouble, but very bad at ending it. My Gentle Readers grow annoyed...

I'm so glad the Hobbits are coming through all right. Note how I carefully avoid the Elf. Lindorien

Talk about one's past sins coming back to haunt....Poor Thorongil. Aragorn. Whatever. And Faramir is quite the bard, even when drunk. Tell Aragorn it's not nice to disparage Faramir. Liked Mithrandir's reaction, and Boromir's thought that the wizard appreciated the song because Faramir wrote it...

Author Reply: I do hope Aragorn figures out that disparaging Faramir might be hazardous to his health. I mean, he's normally such a steady kind of guy. Ah, well, perhaps he should have not done REALLY great deeds during his errantry. You know, maybe he should have just done boring kind of deeds...

I wonder how long it will take Boromir to pick up on the clues being thrown out by the heir of Isildur and the wizard!

I like watching Pippin learn. It will take him a while, I suspect. This is good fun.

Author Reply: I dunno, Bodkin. Boromir has no reason to suspect now, does he? He's likely to take things badly, if Aragorn keeps being surly. I mean, the poor guy is just trying to keep everybody's spirits up. Lindorien

That is EVIL.

I love your Boromir. And this terribly amusing fic, and the song! The song! I love how you've worked Acacea's drabbles into this framework. It's all so perfectly pictured and they're all in-character and, um, yeah funny! I love this, please, please please continuez!

Love, Nol.

Author Reply: Yes yes I continue. I'm messing with Chapter 2 now, in between other work. I'm glad you're liking it. Those drabbles were far too precious to let go by as is. Acacea has the quirkiest sense of humor. She really does. I'm so glad she let me do this! Lindorien
