Dreams within dreams amid the flicker of firelight.

Beautiful Lindorian, subtle, disturbing and mystical.

Hugs

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

--Edgar Allan Poe

From some well or another does every inspiration draw, Shirling. Thanks so much. I'm so pleased this moved you. Lindorien

I loved this story! Starts out as a fluffy AU story, and then the sinister claws of the real LOTR universe creep in and take hold.

I think the whole thing is a dream that Boromir's having in Lothlorien, after looking in Galadriel's mirror.

Did you write the poem at the end? It's gorgeous.

Author Reply: Thank you, Raksha! I did indeed write the poem at the end. I write all my own poetry. I wasn't so certain about the third verse, however and kept changing it. I might still mess with it. Boromir never looked in Galadriel's mirror. At least, JRRT doesn't tell us as much. Perhaps Boromir dreams this reality every night after his confrontation with Galadriel. I was nervous people would be thinking - 'What in the world is Lindorien doing here?' and clickout before getting to the end. I'm so glad you liked it! Lindorien

Like a punch in the gut.

Very compelling, leaving an ache behind.

You write with a deft economy of words:
Ah, the raised eyebrow. The protestation cannot be far behind.

Author Reply: Thanks, Lindelea - I wanted people to sink into the vision, feel it with him, want it for them. Yet know, that in the end - it's impossible. Thankyou for the play on words! Lindorien

This is *seriously* creepy! Beautiful job! Is this what the Ring offered Boromir? I know, you said let the reader decide. It makes me think of Frodo's comment that a deceit of the enemy would "look fairer, and feel fouler," What could look fairer than the two brothers, alive in a thriving Gondor, wed, with children? And yet the whole thing gives off a "foul feel". Excellent! Wow!

Author Reply: Thank you, Dreamflower. This is pretty much what I was going for. I tried to imagine their world without a Dark Lord - he gone an age. Finduilas might not have died, no Thorongil to get on Denethor's nerves, no issues of 'The Wizard's Pupil'. Perhaps there would be the normal Father/Son issues, perhaps Denethor would still be a sort of hard guy, but would these two live a life of relative contentment? We are shaped by what has gone before. Perhaps this is what the Ring offered, a chance to experience their lives as they would have been. I'm so glad you liked this. Thanks for reading! Lindorien
