Cloaks and Memories  by Shireling 16 Review(s)
daw the minstrelReviewed Chapter: 10 on 2/20/2004
I haven't reviewed this yet although I read it all, and I have to comment on something that surprised me when I read it. At first, I thought this view of Eowyn and Faramir was a distant one, that we would be far from their feelings and actions because we were simply being told what happened in retrospect. But the more I read, the deeper I was drawn into this, until by the end,I was really swept up in the anguish of these two. I also liked the double first person which you handled so skillfully.

Author Reply: Daw,
Thank you. I'm so glad that I managed to get 'under the skin' of them both. It was a facinating process, especially as their roles in the books leave so many blanks.

Beautifully written, with so many little touches. I find it difficult to write in the first person, but you have done very well.

I particularly liked Faramir's awakening to the smell of fresh bread.

Author Reply: Lindelea,

Thank you .

It was an interesting and difficult story to write because I got so wrapped up in the characters. I started it after I had seen TTT but before the Extended edition came out...I wanted to try to redress the balance!

This is wonderful Helen...my love for Faramir grew in ROTK, though I loved his character in the books. PJ rescued him from the smirky Faramir of TTT and let his real character shine through. And Eowyn...a brave and noble lady.
Thank you so much for this story!

I agree that PJ redeemed himself in my eyes in ROTK..I hated the portrayal of Faramir in TTT (although the EEDVD was a slight improvement).

'My' Faramir is honourable, brave and dutiful to the point that he ignores his own welfare in his attempts to do what he perceives as his duty.

What a sad, believable, intriguing story. I have always been fascinated by Eowyn and Faramir and you have deftly captured such strong emotional possibilities for the dear characters. I can certainly believe that Faramir would wear himself out, both from duty and an avoidance of grief. I adore how Eowyn accepts her strength and is now willing to accept her innate compassion as well. I am looking forward to what will be coming next.

They are both so easy to love. I'm afraid things get worse before they get better!

An angle of the aftermath I had never thought much about. A telling glimpse of both Faramir and Eowyn, if from a respectful distance. :)

Telling the story from alternating POVs was a challenge as each only sees half the picture!

There is a long way to go yet!

What a beautifully written story. Faramir spends himself in healing his city, and Eowyn discovers that she, too, is able to offer healing and gentleness in ways she never imagined.

'My' Faramir is dutiful to the point of neglecting his own well-being...much angst ensues. I just hope others don't get put off by my characterisation of him as I explore this side of his character.
