Glorfindel Fair   by Antigone Q 19 Review(s)
Orophins DottirReviewed Chapter: 1 on 1/21/2004
"A crown of flowers?" muttered Glorfindel incredulously, "While fighting dragons? And those towers were made of pure stone!"

Ah, the poor, poor Lord of the House of the Golden Flower!

Oh, my! I loved this. I am sure everyone will be screaming for you to let us know what Glorfy does to Erestor. Include me in that horde.

I also particularly like his righteous indignation that he would have left the rear "undefended".

I am with you on pronunciation. As far as I can determine from Tolkien, this would be the way to go. I also do the same with Erestor and Mithrandir.

Author Reply: Yes, there are several people who want a sequel, it seems.

Book of Lost Tales 2 does in fact imply that most of the "women and sick" (Tolkien's words, not mine, believe me!) had been sent rearward for safety, but that Glorfindel, at least, was already there. So to say that there was "nobody" in the back was probably especially insulting to him.

Author Reply: Thank you; I do work hard on style - it's nice of you to comment on that.

Poor Glorfindel; it must be awful to have to sit through people singing praises to you.

o.O A crown of flowers... while fighting fire-breathing dragons. Oh yes, a crown of flowers is most DEFINITELY what I would want to wear while doing so. [/sarcasm]

Author Reply: Yes, imagine if someone kept announcing the wonderful thing you had done a long, long time ago. I'd think it would be sort of like your Mom bringing out your second-grade spelling paper every time your friends come over.

No, you don't want to wear flowers while fighting dragons...but if the song hadn't been appropriately embarrassing, where would the fun have been?

I am so impressed that you can write a poem of this length! Or of any length for that matter.

I have to admit I have been pronouncing Glorfindel's name with the emphasis on the first syllable, but I kind of like the sound of the way you do it.

Author Reply: I was surprised at myself for writing this - I don't think I've written anything but free verse since I took a class on sonnets in college some years ago. When I started the poem, I discovered that I was using both Glor'-fin-del and Glor-fin'-del, and I decided I had better pick one or the other - lol.

I have been trying to review all morning, but the Golden One wouldn't let me! He is in as much of a state as he is in your story! I loved it - and I do not believe this is a 'songfic' - you wrote it yourself (awesome, by the way) and your character is singing it. Much like Avon's story 'Red and Green Leaves' - I think this is an appropriate use of song in a Middle-earth story.

Author Reply: It began as sort of a Tennyson-style poem, and then Glorfindel's horrified reaction came to me very clearly. So I got kind of a funny story out of it, instead.

Oh, yes, I can just imagine that Glorfindel would be tired of hearing about his death! Good poem, though, and little Estel singing it is so cute. I love Glorfindel's interruptions, and his being shushed by the others. And I'm sure Erestor will eventually get his....

Author Reply: My thought was that Glorfindel has lived a long, long time, and must know all these songs inside-out. Yes, Erestor will get his...some time.

absolutely hilarious and way too cute.

I wanna know about Glorfindel's revenge on Erestor

Author Reply: Lots of people want to know about Glorfindel's revenge, it seems. I'll have to think about it some more.

LOL...knowing the story of Gondolin from the Book of Lost Tales, I must say it was humerous to read this rendition of the tale. :-)

I loved this! Thank you.

Author Reply: Yep, the poem was inspired by the Book of Lost Tales...with some poetic license, as Glorfindel noted during Estel's rendition.

A sequel! This needs a sequel! I want to see Glorfindel get revenge on Erestor! That was so funny and the poem was great!
When I first read the history of ME and found how Glorfindel fell, I always thought it was somewhat embarassing! That captured it perfectly!

Author Reply: I'm happy you liked it. Yes, it was the HoME version that inspired me, and I may write a sequel if I find an original idea.
