Something Stinks  by Chigger 18 Review(s)
Miss AranelReviewed Chapter: 3 on 11/24/2003
Oh dear...Eomer has killed the poor skunk. If it were a typical, fairly innocent skunk I might have to leave a rank, but since this is a very disgusting and rather violent skunk, I suppose I can't get upset. *g*

Hmm...so that's why his hair is shorter in the movie! Makes sense.

It dawned on me that he could have used vinegar to get of the smell. Oh well...I think the story is better without it. *g*

Lovely last chapter, Chigger.

Author Reply: Do they have vinegar in Rohan?

I don't think that I could ever feel sorry for a skunk. Except maybe that poor skunk in Bambi that was ambushed by the dreaded Mary Sue! :)

Thanks for the review!

Hi Chigger, super last chapter, So that is why Eomer's hair is not as long as the other Rohirrim!! Now I know!!

Author Reply: Coriel and I noticed that, and so I decided to put it in my story. Hey, if something stinks, cut it off. :)

Thanks for all the feedback.

Hmmmm. Could that be the reason Grima had Eomer banished/jailed? Eh, he got what he deserved. Nicely done. :)

Author Reply: I hadn't thought of that, but it's probable. ;) Sometimes even the most composed people snap and just have to hurt *somebody*! Grima just happened to push all the wrong buttons. Glad you liked it. (Sorry for smelling up your namesake!)

Wooo---I think Grima really deserved that one. There are occasional moments when I feel a tad sorry for that evil guy, but I doubt I will be having any of those while reading this story. *g*

And our skunk pal has invaded the king's room too, huh? I found it rather amusing that the stench had the ability to actually capture Theoden's attention.

I really enjoyed Eomer's musings after he woke up---it's hard to find good serious Rohan bits, and even harder to find ones that aren't completely pathetic. Lovely job!

"He was not completely without friends, he corrected himself. He still had his horse." Loved that!!

This is a great story---thank you for sharing it!

Author Reply: Sometimes I feel sorry for a certain bad guy, I mean, some aren't bad, they're just misguided, but Grima, especially after seeing the movie, is just one big slimeball, and I can't stand the guy!

Coriel and I lived in the master bedroom there for awhile before we moved (long story) and the a/c unit was right outside our window. This lovely little skunk moved in and WHEW what a stench! We could hear him scratching and smell him living down there and it was just . . . gross! (He was later shot by our wonderful brother.) Therefore, I know that Theoden would have to notice *that* for gosh sakes. How can you help it?

I was hoping that the little serious moment in there wouldn't ruin the story. I had no intention of putting it in there, it just flowed and I hadn't the heart the take it out, so I'm glad you liked it.

A good horse is a wonderful companion, as is a good dog. We've had horses and they are really nice. You have to be careful when you rub *their* tummy though. Their feet aren't as soft as a dog's. :)

LOL! A skunk getting Eomer!

This is a treat, since there are so few humerous, but still fairly canonical, stories taking place in Rohan. I find the place and its people rather captivating, since they are one group in Tolkien's ME that seem very real but still very far away.

The bit inside the Golden Hall was hilarious (and I thought the characters were very well written), as well as the tomato hunt (that one shriveled tomato---poor Eomer! What time of year is it?).

I'm going to check out the other chapter now...

Author Reply: The idea was too tempting and I just had to write this story. Coriel refuses to have anything to do with it. She usually reads over my stuff and gives me pointers, but she wanted no part of this one, so it's all my own for once. :)

I agree about Rohan. So few people know anything about it, and so they just write it off as unintersting. I love Rohan and her people and I like Eomer even more than I like Legolas, really. I love horses and I find Men easier to work with, therefore, Rohan is perfect, if they would just learn how to write.

This takes place *right* before LOTR, but I don't know what time of year it is, really. I just didn't think that tomatoes were really native to Rohan, it would work better if he didn't get any and importing them from the Shire isn't conducive to ripe products. :)

Hi Chigger, super second chapter, and I am glad Grima got his comeuppance. I did not know skunks were nocturnal, so thanks for the tip.
p.s.I am from the uk we do not have skunks here.

Author Reply: I'm from Texas, and we DO have skunks there. My older brother even had to shoot one that was wandering around our property once. It came around while we were eating lunch and I haven't been able to eat that particular kind of pasta again. That thing was UGLY!!! And SMELLY!!! Yuck!

I can't stand Grima.

How deliriously funny! And original, too, by my reckoning. Think we should tell Eomer that tomatoes are not native to Middle Earth? You know, just to brighen his day a little more?

Author Reply: As the people making the movie put it, we're dealing with Balrogs, Cave Trolls, Orcs, Dark Lords, who's going to care about a little tomato? And I'm sure that's just what he's dying to hear! Glad you liked it. :)
