May the Valar Protect Them  by Nilmandra 54 Review(s)

I`m still loving this! Just a quick question before I continue to read. During the winter they stayed in the cave, I remember you writing something about Tathiel and the children teaching Legolas about his family. Wouldn`t it be obvious he learn their names then? It would be hard to explain about someone`s family without saying names, so why wouldn`t Tathiel say them? Just curious, as always. Bye!

Author Reply: He was only an infant then, and at least to them, he had only picked up on the concept of his sisters, so they were surprised at the suddeness of hearing him say Lathron. Its possible he recalled something form his infant time, but the clarity of it was surprising!

Hey! I`m really enjoying this so far. You have a great plot line and excelent characters. I was somewhat confused with all of the extras and which family was which, but it seems to be coming together. I`m also a little uncertain as to why the shadow seemed to come back almost over night.
Anyhow, I can`t wait to read the rest!

Author Reply: Glad you are liking th story so far. There are a lot of OC's (in retrospect, I probably would make less of them now!) but hopefully they will sort themsevles out. As for the shadow, the elves were just as confused! They only knew it happened, but it was a while before they learned why too. Hope you enjoy the rest!

This was the very first long Lord of the Rings story I read after I discovered the genre back around Christmas.

I've read a lot since then.

I still love this one, though.

So I suppose that makes you responsible for me taking up my pen - or keyboard - and writing my own.

Author Reply: I shouldn't admit it, but Tathiel and Lathron are my two favorite OC's that I've written. I'm glad you still like this story after reading more of what is out there - it was my first attempt and I have to admit I see all the technical aspects of my writing that needed improving! (daw whips me into shape).

And if I am responsible, then I count myself forutnate! I like your stories, although I see I am behind - again! But a new chapter of HLII will be up this weekend. Its nearing completion. :-)

It is almost superfluous to add another gushing review to your already overflowing collection, but I had to tell you how much I enjoyed this story. I was especially impressed with Elenath's blessing at the festival -- certainly one of the most touching scenes I have ever read. And the special link between Lathron and Legolas was a wonderful idea. It is truly amazing what you have done with a story that consists almost entirely of OCs (except for Thranduil). I am amazed that I could care so much for people whom I did not know at all before starting your story.

Author Reply: I am so glad you did! That scene with Elenath was a tearjerker to write too. One of the themes of Tolkien I liked is the closeness of elven families and community, and that scene was one way to show that. I am glad you liked that. I am going to have to admit that I fell in love with Lathron while writing him - and I am very glad you came to care for these characters! Thank you for the review - I very much appreciate it.

Oh what a wonderful story and it finally had the happy ending I was looking for. Sheesh you put these characters through a lot and reading this was emotionally exhausting! lol

I found myself screaming at the "bad men" along with little Legolas and having a hissy fit to see them all pay dearly for the harm they'd both done and intended against the lost Elves. *relieved sigh* I'm glad they paid, but felt sorry for Tal Elmar (or however you spell his name) that he died too. *pout* I'd like to think he wound up with his wife who died before him and they are happy in whatever version of heaven Men of Arda went to. I also like to envision the hell his evil family members are going through for eternity. *vb~wicked~g*

Well written and I loved it dearly. I'm almost afraid to start reading the sequel because I get so caught up in the characters you've created I neglect everything else and I really ought to get SOME work done today. *giggle*

Author Reply: Thanks, Duchess, I am glad you liked it. Little Legolas was endearing and I thought *his* ellyth and Tathiel were wonderfully brave to survive such conditions. I felt bad for Tal-Elmar too, but he was an example of how innocent people can surely be harmed by those around them.

Thank you for reviewing!

I read this story about eight months ago (I was brand new to fanfiction) and never reviewed it until I realized it was posted here. I think this was one of the first epic-length stories I ever tried. I remember staying after school a couple of hours extra to read it for the several days it took, and have reread it several more times since then. I love Legles! What a sweetie - his place in the story, and especially after he started talking, are priceless. All of the other characters are great, too. I really liked Lathron, 'tho, and his connection to his baby brother. Wonderful stuff! The ending and reunion with his family, his naneth and Aglos is pretty much perfect...the only way to improve on it would be to make it longer :) . Thank you for such a terrific intro to the extended world of the elves. I've been partaking (er.. can you say "overdosing?") ever since!

Author Reply: Linda, it is so kind of you to come back and review this now. I can tell you it thrills me that people like this story enough to re-read it. I love Lathron too. Someone compared him to Faramir once, and I rather agree with that. He is the gentle brother who is a competent soldier, but really would rather not fight. Legolas is fortunate to have him. :-)

WOW! great story! if only i came across it sooner! It was kindo of sad when Tal-Elmar died, i liked him. There were some parts when i wanted to laugh and some when i wanted to cry. Brilliant story, i must say again. Im glad Tathiel and Rawien got married. Rawien is one of my favorite characters in this story.

Author Reply: I admit, I wanted Rawien for myself. I am glad you liked the story - thanks for letting me know!

All right!!! A long awaited reunion.
I can hear them now. "That elf just has to drag every kind of creature home. This time it is a dwarf. Will he never learn." I hope not. After all Galadriel suports him in this anyway. But do we trust a Noldo? I do.
I looked forward to Legolas meeting Naneth as soon as I realized where you were going with this. But I forgot about Alagos. I hope he forgives me. So Legolas was a copy of Naneth and Alagos was a copy of Adar. That is just too sweet.
Legolas doesn't have to cry now he has his Naneth and will get to know her for an eternity.
Legolas had many friends, Tathiel for an edwon (I hope I spelled that right) naneth, a truly awe inspiring adar and his siblings but Lathron had always known his heart. I am just a sucker for sibling love.
The Maia of Manwe. I hope the prince does get to meet him one day to thank him and swap tales. I think he is fond of Legolas as we all are.
Well it is over. Sigh. And yes I will read your other tales as soon as I recover from this one. I have already read Eilian's Begetting Day because I am hopelessly hooked on daw's vision of Legolas Thranduilion's upbringing and she had mentioned that tale once. That led me to 'nudge' and then to your stories. I want to read much, much more so I try to review and let writers know that we are out here and eagerly anticipating where you will take us next. Thank you.

I have to laugh. I took so long to read this I forgot the prologue and was startled to start reading about Rawien relating this to Elrond and Glorfindel. I went back and checked the prologue to get up to speed. Age takes away your memory to a disturbing degree.
Fate, chance and circumstance rule the way of all lives whether mortal or immortal.
I loved the thought of Legolas being a child of the realm belonging to all who rescued him. I am sure with the way of his birth and the circumstances of his rescue all elves in Mirkwood felt a special interest in him.
It is so good that the events he had to endure at such a young age did not harden into fear and suspicion but made him more flexible to new people and events than the ordinary silvan elf.
So Legolas has fulfilled his destiny and they will await him at home. He just has to fulfill his promise to Aragorn and then he too can go to elvenhome.
That actually sent a shiver up my spine when I read it. Something about the elves leaving gets me every time.
One more chapter to go and it is over. SOB

Too, too sweet.
I don't usually get all misty eyed over fantasy but I think I did with this. I did manage one tear over Sam in ROTK but that was it.
So they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time when it came to the orcs. I think the orcs and Easterlings were the ones to pay for that little cosmic coincidence.
Tathiel, the prince and the ellyth are a little uncomfortable around a huge group of guy elves. They have been alone for so long it would be a little overwhelming.
Bregolas thinks Legolas is just like their mother. They will have someone to remember her by. Have you seen Dawnlyn's pencil sketches of Legolas? She has a baby picture that is so sweet it could almost put a diabetic into a coma. I can say this because I am insulin resistant and understand what sugar can do to a person's well being.
The bond between Legolas and Tathiel would be even stronger than ordinary because she has not had a father to share the bonding with. The prince has taken everything he needs from her. This could be a complication in the future. But we know how well adjusted he turns out so they do work things out.
Having the prince rehearse what he will say to adar. Words won't really matter when the king sees his son for the first time but Tathiel shows her devotion to the family by her care.
Finally Legolas gets to see what an adar is. His ellyth's ada seems to be a good thing to him. He is still overwhelmed by strangers, he is only courageous to a point and the ada passed the point. But the prince is still a polite elfling and finally warms up to him.
What a lovely scene you crafted for the reunion of Legolas and family. Moving, sweet and teary. Just what we need at this point in the story. And yes adars are great to have around. After feeling so unsafe around Hazad and running from orcs he can now feel safe in adas arms and be secure with his family. Leges loves Lafron too and now Lathron can sense only warmth and comfort from Legolas. He can be the bridge if needed to bring Legolas into the family.
I am sorry but the possessive prince is not ever going to let Tathiel go completely. He is going to need her for a long time and thank goodness the king realizes this.
A warm bath. What a novelty. There will be so many things that a little elfling will have to get used to. And for Tathiel what a nice homecoming.
Such sweet interaction between the king and his little prince at dinner. Legolas is going to bring his family so much warmth, love and comfort. If he is like his mother she seemed to be a very warm and loving she elf so he will be for his family too.
Well this part of the tale is over so we can leave Legolas to the loving embrace of his extended family.
Thank you for all the hard work you put into this. I know I have a few chapters to go but I cannot conceive of how much time you expended on this to have thirty chapters and long ones at that. I didn't want to forget to thank you.

Author Reply: I love dawnlyn's work - her youngest Legolas is what I see when I think of him. I am lgad you liked the story. The epilogues were written before the inital story, much was yanked out, and had I known I would continue the little Legolas chronicles, I am not sure I would have had the last chapter. But, oh well :D There is an elfling to raise, and I hope if you have the time and inclination you'll read the much shorter sequels. Thank you! ~Nilmandra
