Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 23 Review(s)
KittyReviewed Chapter: 29 on 6/24/2014
Serindë did a good job to calm the twins down, and Elladan is right, of course. They should let the other healers teach them what they need to know, and I think under different circumstances they'd have agreed easily. The main problem is the timing and their current state, after all.

Interesting discussion between Finrod and Eärnur. Finrod is right, of course, and I have to admit, Eärnur still sounds like he feels a bit superior. Does nothing to endear him to me, to be honest; I am feeling rather protective of the twins at the moment.

Argh – right now, I want to strangle Vardamir. The way that idiot is dismissing the twins makes me so furious! And it's pretty obvious that he thinks his own techniques are faaar above anything mortals can do and disregards their knowledge out of hand, thinking it just an useless waste of time. It's about time someone takes him down a peg or five.

Oh wow. Go, Kyle! I have to admit, I didn't like him at first in the other story, but he more than made up for it now. I was cheering him on when he told Vardamir and Eärnur off! And even more so that he rubbed the twin's degree into their faces. Well done!

Author Reply: Hi Kitty. Vardamir and Eärnur were clearly in the wrong here to dismiss the Twins out of hand and Kyle was just the person to tell them off, too. He has his own brand of arrogance, as we saw in the EA2, but I think he's redeemed himself in the eyes of many here. Thanks for your comments. I appreciate them very much.

Woa! That was a roller-coaster ride. I could strangle Earnur and Vardamir. Who do they think they are? Especially, Earnur who was just warned by Finrod to take the twins seriously. What an arrogant pair they are. This chapter revealed how deep the rift between the elven groups are. I loved Kyle Stoner in this. He gave the pair of elven "doctors" a good and necessary chewing out. Poor Glorfindel. At least he was unconscious. I just hope some Maia is standing by to get him back. If he slipped his leash, God knows where he ended up.

Author Reply: You're not the only one who wants to strangle Vardamir and Eárnur, obsidianj. Kyle rocks, that's for sure. And we'll see in the next chapter who's keeping tabs on Glorfindel's wandering fëa. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

That was just... yowza. Mir and Erie sure stepped in it this time! Thank goodness Dr. Stoner was there; wonder if he had a little divine suggestion to stroll to that area at that precise time.

I'm really feeling for Finrod - he's got his hands full and then some.

Author Reply: Hi Lyana. Yowza indeed! I wouldn't be surprised if some Maia nudged him in the general direction of ICU just about then. His arrival was serendipitous. And Finrod has a lot on his plate right now. Thanks for leaving a review. I really appreciate it.

Okay... Did I understand right? Eärnur is giving the twins hard time and looking down his nose at them just because he didn't get along with their father? (Which makes me even more curious as to what exactly happened in Valinor.)

It is a bit frustating how no one is listening to anyone else, except Serindë. She is turning out to be a lot more pleasant person than it seemed in EA2.

I think they shouldn't let the Valinorean elves act as official doctors for a long time. They have no experience about blood transfusion and thought that their diagnosis was correct, just because they didn't think the twins are "real" healers? That sounds unprofessional. Poor Glorfindel.

Author Reply: Hi someone. I don't think it is a case of Eärnur not getting along with Elrond. I'm sure they respect each other and are probably even friends to some extent. I think Eärnur is simply referring to the fact that Elrond was initially resistant to the idea of being Irmo's apprentice and possibly Eärnur was one of the master healers who was assigned to tutor Elrond along with Vardamir and he is recalling the trouble he and the other master healers had with Elrond at the time.

When you're stressed out and lacking sleep and full of worry, it's hard to listen to anyone or even to hear what they are truly saying. Serindë isn't as emotionally involved so it's easier for her, though she's definitely on the Twins' side.

I think it will be awhile before Kyle will accord the Valinórean Elves the right to act as doctors for a time after this, as we will see.

Thanks for leaving a review. I appreciate it very much.

You know what would be fun, Fiondil? Having the Twins teach _Mir and Ernie_ proper medical procedure! (The Twins do have their credentials in order after all.) Would love to be a fly on the wall for that! *grins evilly*

Author Reply: That would be fun, but I'm not sure if the Twins would be willing to do so. Once burned, twice shy and all that. Still, you never know. Thanks for the suggestion, Sunny.

LaerReviewed Chapter: 29 on 4/8/2014
Go Kyle! (If I remember correctly he got the same lecture.) Thank goodness he arrived when he did, slipped leash or not Loren needed someone on "his side"

Hell of a way for the higher ups to prove a point. That both sides could learn from the other. Not just "mortal" medicine but all medicine. And that the "children" have learned much. Yes. But it would appear more than one of the adults needed to learn a few things. Guess training Elrond didn't teach them anything about that ;)

Author Reply: Hi Laer. Yeah, he did get something of the same lecture and it apparently stuck.

I don't think that the Valar are consciously saying, "Let the lessoning begin" but simply allowing the Children (both Elves and Mortals) to muddle along on their own. That's really the only way to learn from one's mistakes. Handing them a solution would never work. And I suspect that with the Valinórean Elves, there were a lot of unrealistic expectations where the Mortals are concerned and therein lies part of the problem.

Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate you doing so very much.

Go Kyle!! I was silently cheering for him as he ripped Eärnur and Vardamir a new one (as the saying goes haha). I really hope Loren is okay! This was terrible to read, the pain that he must be going through... *shudder* at least he was still unconscious.

And now he's slipped his leash...Namo is not going to be happy...neither is Manwe...is it bad that I'm silently heheing at the picture of those two yelling at Eärnur and Vardamir? That would be on talking to that would be both terrifying and worthwhile to see.

Can't wait for Friday's episode...(typo that I couldn't help but leave in haha. Sometimes the way you write does seem like I'm watching a very good television show. I mean that in the highest compliment possible.

Author Reply: Go Kyle indeed! He wasn't exactly a sterling character when we first met him, but he shows his worth here as he reams Mir and Ernie out for their stupidity.

We'll see in the next chapter what the consequences are of Glorfindel slipping his leash.

This story does feel like a soap opera doesn't it? Especially with all the cliffies. LOL! And actually, when I'm writing I write as if I'm describe scenes from a movie, so you're not too far off with your "feels like a good television show". Anyway, thanks for the compliment and thanks for leaving a review. Both are highly appreciated.

And so good intentions are thrown by the wayside as each side is certain it is right and the other side wrong, and as sensibilities get in the way of open communication. Time for a good talking to by our favorite Vala, I suspect, as both sides need some loving chewing out!

Author Reply: And we all know about good intentions, don't we, Larner? And I think Kyle is doing a good job of it himself with Mir and Ernie and I'm sure Finrod will show his displeasure as well when he finds out what's happened and then when Glorfindel finally comes to and is recovered enough to give the world grief... well, I'm sure we'll all be sitting there with popcorn enjoying the show. heh! Thanks for reading and reviewing. I very much appreciate it.

Poor Glorfindel, he always has to pay the price for the snobbery of others!
Go, Dr. Stoner! Oh, I was so proud of him on behalf of us, mere mortals! But where have Sarah and the Twins gond?

Author Reply: Yeah, poor Glorfindel, indeed, Soledad, but at least he's unconscious and is unaware of what's happening. And Dr. Stoner is definitely the man! We'll find out in the next chapter where Sarah and the Twins went and why. Thanks for leaving a review. I much appreciate it.

LindeleaReviewed Chapter: 29 on 4/7/2014
Finrod: I confess I never thought to enquire. I think I simply assumed
Ah, Finrod. Gotta watch those assumptions. There's a Mortal cliche about assumptions: ASSUME: Making an ASS out of "U" and "ME"

Eärnur: Mortal techniques are not as reliable as our own
My first thought on reading this was "famous last words." Almost became such, for Glorfindel. ("Slipping his leash!" I wonder what Kyle Stoner's first thoughts were on hearing that little piece of data... The missing ring is a sort of anchor, isn't it, which is why there's a constant Elf-watch on Glorfindel? And now he's without his Elf-guard (which sounds somehow like a brand of deodorant -- does my mind work weirdly before-coffee, or what?) -- although they haven't quite left the hospital, they just went to ask about the Twins, so hopefully they'll come back.

I do hope someone thought to call Finrod, or he's going to be Royally torqued.

Finrod rolled his eyes. “And I thought the Twins were being impossible. Yes, that is what I counsel. You are, of course, free to ignore my advice as you have done in the past, though you might recall that every time you did, you landed yourself in even deeper trouble than before."
I would listen if I were you...
Of course, as it turns out, they are very much in the right, in this situation.

Why do I get the feeling that Glorfindel is something of a lab rat or guinea pig (well, okay, that's not the exact image but it's the closest I can come when I'm this groggy) in this tiny piece of the Grand Scheme? I was thinking as the crisis escalated that he was being used as a teaching tool to take the New Arrivals down a peg... with the Maiar standing back and watching things unfold. Would they actually have allowed him to die, to teach the rest a lesson? Tough lesson, especially for Glorfindel, not to mention Finrod and the Twins.

Do Maiar bite their fingernails? (Rhetorically speaking.)

Author Reply: Hi Lindelea: Yeah, someone should tell Finrod about that mortal cliché. It's no less true for being a cliché and a mortal one at that. *grin*

I'm sure Kyle will be demanding to know just what is meant by "slipping his leash" and why that worries the elves where Glorfindel is concerned. I don't think he's going to like the answer when he hears it.

As I pointed out to another reviewer, Glorfindel has always been "bait", however one wishes to define it, and perhaps "teaching tool" in this context is a better term.

And while the Maiar can't interfere with our or anyone else's free will, when given direct orders to do so, they will interfere in matters, so I doubt they would allow Glorfindel to die, if only because that would make Námo very unhappy and we don't want that, do we? LOL!

Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.
