Right up to the evil cliffhanger, this chapter left me feeling very quiet and solemn, very appropriate considering what it entails. I also asked myself how many of the Vanyar lining the streets to watch the hearse go by and later on to pay their respects to Ingalaurë were at least partially motivated by curiosity. How many of them had ever bevor seen a dead body? An empty hröa, without the fëa that enlivens it? I don't necessarily mean prurience, although I can imagine it was that for some, but just - how can you wrap your mind around such a totally alien concept, and here is the example to what they only know is possible in theory. Oh, and before I forget it again, I've long wanted to compliment you on how you convey the Elves' (and also Valar's) utter unfamiliarity with certain concepts (that to us are completely normal), how they don't even have words to describe those concepts, which is especially poignant considering they call themselves the Quendi, and the crucial role language has in Tolkien. And that's a very tense cliffhanger. At first when it was revealed that Ingwion is missing, I thought he might be hiding in his childhood hidey-hole. But this - uh oh.. Now we'll learn just why Ingoldo is so afraid of Ingwion. Author Reply: Hi Imhiriel. Your observations about the Vanyar and what they must have been feeling as they watched the procession and later paid their respects are very profound. It must have felt so surreal to them. It wasn't easy to imagine how it must have been for the Elves and the Valar/Maiar to grapple with concepts for which they had no words, for the words had never been needed before. I imagine that this is what it must've been like for our distant ancestors struggling to make sense out of their world and trying to verbalize their thoughts and feelings when confronted with "alien" concepts. I'm glad you think I succeeded in conveying these people's utter unfamiliarity with certain concept we take for granted. Thanks for telling me. I appreciate it as I appreciate this review. And yes, we do indeed find out why Ingoldo fears Ingwion in the next chapter.

So... Ingwion is not quite as meek and dazed as he pretends. He is much more influenced by the actions of Ingoldo as anyone imagined. Before Ingoldo showed him what you all can do, I don't think he would have even thought of sneaking around like that. I know he will not kill Ingoldo, but I don't think, he just wants to "chat" either. Author Reply: Hi obsidianj. No, Ingwion has become a predator, biding his time. This is getting down right scary. I hope someone intervenes before it is too late. Revenge is never the answer and only causes more problems. Author Reply: Hi Tari. Yes, Ingwion is pretty scary here. Apparently Ingwion remembers more than he appeared to. And to fool a Maia is quite the feat in and of itself. I do hope he is stopped before he becomes yet another kinslayer. Poor Ingwion! I cannot feel for Ingoldo, however. Author Reply: Apparently so, Larner. Ingwion is pretty crafty and he must've been plotting this little escapade from the moment he returned to Tirion. Atya, You realize you've just taken over half the years off my life with an ending like that, right??? curls up beside Atto to try and catch a glimpse of the next chapter (or you know I would be, of course, if I could, LOL!) is still shuddering And now I have to wait all weekend to find out what happens??? is waiting anxiously to find out why Ratty doesn't die (Though I would rather not have even the Rat's blood on Ingwi's hands...) ...swallow...Ingwion is not as absent as he wanted us to know. As much as I think Ingoldo deserves this I hope Ingwion comes to his senses or can be stopped. It would do unreparable damage to all of them. Poor lad. I liked this chapter very much. Thank you. Lai Author Reply: Hi Lai. No, Ingwion is not as 'absent' as everyone assumes (including the Valar). OMG!!! You really know how to finish a chapter!! All was so sad, calm, and quiet. I was in tears and thinking that Ingwon was sedated. And then, he did exactly what they were trying to prevent. At least, the whole palace is full of Valars and I can see why Ingoldo is afraid of him. Poor, poor Ingwon. I cannot understand elves; of course, their fading is such an alien concept to humans, something similar to suicide. It seems that they are not equipped with the survival mechanisms that humans have, maybe because they immortality. I'm thinking that maybe was better to him to fade instead of being half mad with grief. The details about where to bury the body was creepy, I never thought about the detail of the reborn walking past their grave. Cremation could have being a good solution, I think. Now, until Monday... Thank you. Author Reply: Hi Fantasia. Well, Námo adamantly refused to all Ingwion the luxury (and that's what it is) of fading, knowing that his presence would be vital in the future when Glorfindel shows up in Vanyamar. I dread to think what might have happened if Ingwion hadn't been there to help Finrod with Glorfindel. And yes, the burial thing is a bit creepy when you think about it. In Middle-earth it wouldn't be a problem since those reborn (with the one exception) would never return there and Glorfindel's grave would not be accessible, being under water. Oh S*t! It looks like Ingwion is a bit more with it than we thought! I hope somebody thinks to check on Ratty in time, Ingwe does not want a Kinslayer for a son. Yes, that would be a bit weird, "...and this is where we had you buried,son" is not a comment a father would want to make while strolling through the gardens with said son! Poor Ingwion, I seem to be saying that a lot lately, he will need a lot of love and sympathy to get through this, maybe a trip to Nienna's or a stay in Lorien? Hm. I am reminded of this quote: "The prospect of being hanged focuses the mind wonderfully." Ingoldo is not facing a noose, but an enraged nephew with a sharp knife, who is very willing to use that knife on Ingoldo. No wonder Ingoldo fears his nephew - as soon as he was able to create a chance, Ingwion went after Ingoldo, quite efficiently and purposefully, and quite rational in his madness. Well, we know Ingwion did not get to kill Ingoldo, but perhaps Ingoldo at least got a scar or two as a memento of this day. feeling bloodthirsty Author Reply: Hi Sunny. I'm sure Ingoldo would agree with that quote. LOL! And we can see why Ingoldo fears his nephew more than his brother the High King.
