The Cursed Queen of Angmar  by khazar-khum 3 Review(s)

This gives a clear sense of the value of women, anyway. They could be used to form alliances and were good for bearing children. I have to say that if I were a man, I would hesitate to marry poor Ariashal. Her spouses do not do well. But the Witch King? Poor thing.

I think this line says it all: 'You are mine to do with what I will.'

Has that not been the fate of women for so long throughout history, and still today? And children? Yet that was not entirely true in Tolkien's world, and I am so glad for that. For being of the Dunedain, Ariashal's family is sorely lacking in any consideration for human rights. Indeed, she is as much a pawn as any other token of the kingdom.

Her despair comes through clearly despite a historical chapter such as this, where much more is 'told' rather than 'shown'. She is only valued for what she does, not for who she is. She is not loved as any human would wish to be. Four husbands and soon-to-be husbands dead, and she is childless. In a place where that is the source of a woman's value, her lot is sad indeed.

Author Reply: Not all the Dunedain--or even the Numenoreans--were above treating women like chattel. The story of Tar-Miriel, last Queen of Numenor, is a sad, cruel tale of rape to force a marriage, followed by years of imprisonment.

Oh, good. I am glad to see this here. I started it once before and just never seen to get back to it. Thanks for posting it here. I am putting the review here because your formatting came out all bold type - which I have done before here too - you just have to fiddle with the formatting in the WYSIWYG window. It'll come out. Now, I've got to go read the chapters I haven't yet...

Author Reply: Nazgul Dan rescued me, beating HTML(or hatemail, which I prefer) into submission for me. He even showed me how to upload it all by myself, which means he can go play on the other computer while I write. :-D
