Maura certainly is a scholar and will serve his father well.

Author Reply: Yes, he will. He's learned a lot.

All of her children have fascinating personalities, but this one is *definitely* Frodo's ancestor.

I'm looking forward to reading more!

Author Reply: Yes. You are absolutely right.

Actually, several are his ancestor in one way or another, but Maura is his direct ancestor all the way back to Adamanta and Tuk.

And Raz is Pippin's and Kali is Merry's, Ban is Sam's and Bildad is Bilbo's.

They have the other siblings intertwined in their family trees at various points-- Buk, for example is also an ancestor for Merry. And Briar Rose is also definitely another of Frodo's ancestors, as Addie is of Pippin's. But of course, there were many generations in between.

The exception is Sam. At some point, Ban's descendants moved away from the main family, and there was no more intermarriage into the line of Adamanta/Tuk.

Ah--definitely Frodo's ancestor here! Yes, wise he would be, and not ambitious to follow his father, but instead to counsel both father and brothers.

Author Reply: Absolutely Frodo's ancestors. I think now the tales of the children are complete, you can see: Raz was the founder of the Took line, Kali of the Brandybucks, and Ban of Sam's line, Bildad of Bilbo and Maura of Frodo's line. Yet descendants of the other sibs would eventually lend their traits and genes down the generations to other hobbit families that would eventually re-marry many decades and even centuries later to lend their talents to the various Fallohide families. Buk, of course was an ancestor of the Oldbucks and then the Brandybucks, and there was much intermarriage between his line and Kali's, as there also was between Bildad's and Maura's. At some point, though, Ban's descendants moved away from the other Fallohides to dwell among the Harfoots, and so there was no longer any fresh infusion of Fallohide blood for the eventual Gamgees.

If you look carefully, you can see many of the fanon characteristics I've given various hobbits, not just the Tooks-Brandybucks-Bagginses-Gamgees, but also Bolgers, Boffins, Proudfoots and so forth.

Maura is an interesting lad! So this one is where Frodo gets his name, hmm?

Timeline, during the early years of the Third Age:

-3 - Tūk and Adamanta are married. (Būk and Briar Rose are the names of Tūk's parents, Adamanta of course only has Eru (and one could argue for Yavanna), but I expect it would be odd to think they showed up in person. Lol!)
0 - Briar Rose's birth. She has blue eyes (like movie!Frodo, heh :) ) and dark hair.
3 - Briar Rose becomes a faunt. Raz is born. This is probably around the time Briar Rose follows Tūk about, receiving trinkets from him to keep.
5 - Adamanta "Addie" is born.
6/7 - Around this time, Kali and Ban are born.
7 - Raz burns his fingers, wheedling biscuits from his gammer and ending up with an upset stomach.
8 - Addie is learning to talk and sing.
10/11 - Buttercup is born.
13/14 - Buttercup becomes a faunt. Adamanta realizes she is with child.
14/15 (or very late in 13) Būk, named for his grandfather, is born.
15 - The Wood-elf Galasgil comes to the village and makes a set of shepherd's pipes for Addie. He teaches her, as well as her brothers and sisters to read and write.
15/16 - Aster and Rowan are born.
16/17 - Around now, Galasgil departs, much to everyone's (but especially Addie's) dismay.
(16?) 17/18 - Būk finally learns to speak, though he speaks well from the beginning.
17/18 - Bildad is born, almost two years to the day after Aster and Rowan's birthday. Because he is born early, and both he and Adamanta are ill, he becomes the pet of the family.
20/21 - Bildad becomes a faunt. Adamanta quickens with child in the spring.
21/22 - Beryl is born in the turning of the year, the dead of winter. She barely crawls, instead quickly learning to run, skip and dance.
(25?) 26/27 - Būk learns to fish, and becomes an excellent angler. He also makes friends with a Stoor, and learns to swim.
32 - Briar Rose gets married. (Although that can't be right, since Būk helped Uncle Gamba build her smial, and he didn't start his apprenticeship until later...unless my dates are off on that?) Maura is born in the autumn.
(33?) 34/35 - Būk apprentices to his "Uncle" Gamba, Tūk's first cousin on his mother's side. He becomes an excellent hole-builder.
35/36 - Aster and Rowan reach tweenhood. Sometime during their tweens, both discover lads, though Rowan is first to do so. Aster, however, is first to attract a lad, Herugar, from a Harfoot village
after 48/49 or so, Aster gets married to Herugar of the Harfoots
51/52 - Beryl, an excellent dancer, becomes betrothed to the second finest dancer in the village.

Būk m. Briar Rose (at least one sister, Gerda, and one nephew, Gamba)

1 s. (Tūk)
at least 2 (?) d. (unnamed)

Tūk m. Adamanta

1. Briar Rose
2. Raz "Little Tūk"
3. Adamanta "Addie"
4. Kali (T)
5. Ban (T)
6. Buttercup
7. Būk
8. Aster (T) m. Herugar of the Harfoots (Harfeet? *grin*)
9. Rowan (T)
10. Bildad
11. Beryl
12. Maura

(I must admit, your 'pattern' puzzled me - I knew Sam had thirteen! But then I noticed the last was Tolman, and of COURSE, Mirime doesn't have a father! Well...she has a Father. But I don't know how that would work!) :) Also, I'm a bit confused on the dates corresponding to Buk's apprenticeship and Briar Rose's marriage...please clarify? :) Hugs!

Author Reply: First: Yes, well, you can assume that Frodo is a direct descendant of Maura (as Pippin is of Raz, Merry is of Kali, and Sam is of Ban, and Bilbo is of Bildad).

As to Buk, take it that his apprenticeship had just begun. At about 18, he'd have been as mature as a human 9 or 10 year old. Not too young for an apprenticeship to a blood-relative. Historically, some children began apprenticeships as young as 7. (To be honest, I'd forgotten how young he'd be-- but still I like the idea of his having a hand in building his sister's smial.)

As to the pattern, it was meant to echo Sam's children up to a point, but also it was meant to echo the Third Age Adamanta (and Gerontius) who had twelve. So I used the "Sam" element to determine the gender and birth-order; but I used the number twelve to pay tribute to the Old Took and his wife. Also, no one gets to equal Sam! LOL!

Author Reply: OK, what I get from replying too early in the morning and not looking things up: Buk would have been closer to the equivalent of a 12 year old at eighteen-- definitely old enough to have begun his apprenticeship! *whew!*wipes brow*
