Fantastic story and lucky for Elrohir to be sheltered in the old ladys house even though she was a ghost. One of my favourite along with your ghoststory of the Elven ghostman who saught company with traveliten.Seems they saw him too and heard his story for real!👍🏽❤️😆

I love reading stories about the sons of Elrond - all perviness and salavating aside! For a moment there I thought he was going to freeze to death and this fic would have a very sad ending. Glad he made it though. I like how honourable you depict the peredhil to be. Leaving the coin behind even after he realised the old woman had no use for it. Almost as if it was his final way of saying thank you to her. Reminds me of a strange experience I had myself. I must say that not many authors portray Elladan and Elrohir as the mature nearly 3000 year old warriors that they truly are. Good to see an author sticking to the way Tolkien depicted them in the few glimpses we had. Look forward to reading the rest of your work. Shlain

I wonder how I missed this when it was posted?

It is, however, very suitable reading for New Year's Eve as well.

Perhaps I was led to it tonight...

Very intriguing.

At first, this seemed like any other story about Elrohir meeting someone who offered him shelter from the storm; only Sarra's repeated question about Tom was a bit odd. But that changed when he met up with Elladan, Arathorn and the others and lead them back to the house to find it in ruins. How eerie! His tracks and the coin Elladan found proved he was there, but obviously in another time. It looks like Elrohir was in sort of a time window, which would explain as well why Elladan couldn't sense him at all. He must feel rather odd after all this!

Oh well, at least Sarra was a good ghost who gave Elrohir and Mithrilyn shelter from the storm, kept them warm and dry and fed them. Just what they needed :) Great story, Jay!

Spooky!

I really liked the detail of the coin and its transformation!

Now, of course, I have all of these ghost house stories running through my head...

Thanks for writing this.

Great creepy story! The cold was so vivid I started to shiver, and shivered in a different way as Sarra's persistent questions about whether Elrohir had seen her Tom made it clear that something untoward was going on.

I think Elrohir stumbled into a time shift, into those days when Sarra wobbled into madness but still knew at some deep level that her husband was dead and she would welcome all travelers because of what had happened to him. As Elladan says, "Somehow you found each other." The distant light was real; the food he ate was real enough that it satisfied his hunger. The fire really dried his clothes. He awoke in comfort, still in the intact cottage, and rode away waving to his hostess. The silver coin is bright when he gives it to her, tarnished when Elladan finds it, as though many decades have passed.

But then why is that particular coin still in the house lying on the table? And there's that glimpse of a face at the window at the end...Elrohir's imagination or something else? We don't know what really happened that night, and that's all the better!

Yikes! I'm still shivering over this - great tale. I'm glad Elladan didn't go out searching for him - Arathorn spoke truthfully - Elrohir could take care of himself... but this was much better.

Though - my mouth wondered at the taste of sawdust in it.... *shivers again*

Great, suspense-filled tale.

A really good Christmassy story for cold winter nights- but terribly sad too.

A fantastic usage of the concept of the ghost who appears at need to help, then disappears back into memories when the help has been given. And you earned the place you got.
