We Were Young Once ~ III  by Conquistadora 15 Review(s)
AngmarillionReviewed Chapter: Prologue on 10/15/2023
While some flawed grammar remains, this story, and especially this third part WOULD have made me a LOTR fan, if old MERP roleplaying by Iron Crown Enterprises wouldn't have already achieved that. Now, I feel once more tempted to write some fiction myself. Far from my usual style, as the demands & standards for Middle-earth are higher than most.

The story here takes place, before Sauron is fully back in power and before Mordor clearly is the enemy again. It therefore takes place BEFORE the War of the Ring!

A story of love, of duty, of bedchamber debates, and of adventurous courage. We get a wonderful depiction of Thranduil the person & king, Thranduille, to please my proofreading software.

Yes, main char from who's perspective we read the most is the King of the Mirkwood Elves aka Wood Elves.

Adversary is the `Necromancer of Dol Guldur´, who happens to be Sauron in his weakened state and deceitful, as always.

It is a mature story, dying, poison, treachery, and murder in it. Even the mention of `sex´, which back in the old days made geeks & roleplayers feel their nerves tingle, as nowadays only Cosplay-ASMR videos tend to do it. ;-)

While note a masterpiece yet, this is a SOLID work and quite worth reading. I read 22 chapters in one night, and I regretted running out of legal stay-awake powder (energy sniff) to finish it in `one fell stroke aka one stupid but happy night wasted on it´.

Kudos, dear author!

I have just recently become a Thranduil fan. I am currently reading We Were Young Once II. During the past Christmas I read your paper on Thranduil and agree with every letter you typed. I also did my own research after reading your thesis to check the facts your presented. Thank you for blowing away all of the fandom fanon myths out there. As for "We Were Young Once" series your writing skills proclaim you a master story teller. When LOTR movies came out in the early 2000s I knew nothing of Tolkien's works. After going crazy over the movies I began my love affair with Tolkien's Books. Now in some ways I wish I had never seen the movies. They do no justice to JRRT's works.

Well, my dear Conquistadora this post is for you. Thank you for writing a serious tale about our favorite Greenwood Boy... ;)

Seriously, if you ever get writers block or need a smile just know YOUR fans are out here to cheer you on...

Author Reply: Thank you!!! I just write the kind of thing I would want to read, and its very exciting when others enjoy it too. Thanks so much for all your kind encouragement. I promise there is another chapter in the works, but it's going to be a long one and I want it to be good. ;)

Thranduil at his father's grave made me cry. The last words said in Lindon by Oropher couldn't be a better encouragement for him. Is it possible that they could be sent to him through Mandos' Halls?

In book 1 I cried because the horse died and in book 2 I cried because Oropher died and here we are in book 3 and you have already reduced me to tears! A very very canonical and well written account of thranduil. I hope to see more from you soon.

I do hope you finish the last part of this trilogy. Book II was so very sad and heartbreaking. I do hope there is some joy in Book III. This explains to me why Thranduil acted the way he did in the Hobbit. It's a great fill in for JRRT's writings.

Author Reply: Thank you so much! I do want to finish it, maybe even do a Book IV. You help me stay motivated!

What happened to you? This is the only fanfiction I still read, so please update it if you can! I'd be very grateful! (Exclamation!)

Ahhhh! Yes, I know; it's terrible! Ummm . . . I think I can promise something before the end of April. It's just that within the next two weeks I have three term papers and two presentations coming due, and the stress factor is threatening to drive me to an early grave, much to the consternation of the Woodland King. o_O

So, stand by, and I'll see what I can do. ;)

Hey, I am back to leave a review. This was a really sad chapter, but I just know that Thranduil will pull through his grief in order to become the king that he was meant to be, as well as a husband and father. Alot of people will be looking up to him for guidance. Well, he known as the greatest king Greenwood as ever had so I'm sure his father would be very proud of him.

Ah, she is returned! Very glad to know you are back and to see you posting here again. :)

Galadhmir was wonderful in this prologue. His speech to Thranduil was perfect. Indeed, there was nothing he could say to that. Their departure from the war was an heartrending closure to another phase in both their lives. The grief of those that await them in Greenwood will not be easy to bear either.

The great story and great writing keeps bringing me back to this saga. And wanting to read more.

Hope you enjoyed Rome, but thanks for coming home!
