Okay, NOW Panic!  by Boz4PM 13 Review(s)

I got behind, sorry Boz.

This was a very emotional chapter for everyone! It had to be so hard on the Elves of Imladris to lose Arwen. Life is full of hard choices, even for immortals.

Author Reply: Don't apologise! It's taken me an age to post the latest chapter, so in some ways you're better off reading it slowly than all those poor people who are forced to wait while I can crank out the next chapter for them! *lol*

I'm so glad you liked this chapter. Yeah, the whole Arwen's choice thing is a hard thing indeed - something that had to be dealt with and would have been quite traumatic for them all, as much as they understood and accepted her choice.

you should make her tell Rhimlath who she is. Then get them to talk about her history and his and then they can get into arguments over wich is actually the superior race. If you get my meaning, it's hard to explain.

Author Reply: I do get your meaning, and it's a nice idea. However, I think it's unlikely she would tell Rhimlath about her past and who she really is. After all, she has not even managed to tell Eleniel or Mireth, and they are very good friends of hers. It is an extraordinary tale, and for all she is believed by very wise and great people (and that in itself would be enough to convince others of its veracity), it's best that the number of people who know are kept to a minimum. It's likely to stay that way.

Technical difficulties have put me behind in my reading so I’ve just got through the last two chapters. Getting up and singing Danny Boy was both brave and brilliant, the words are perfect for the occasion and of course the tune is moving even if the words are foreign. I think you really conveyed the mood in the room well. I’ve often tried to think of songs that would be appropriate for a Middle Earth crowd – Danny Boy was on my list.. Which others does Penny have on her short (sober) list that she thinks would work?
As always, I am looking forward to the next chapter.

Author Reply: My apologies for not replying sooner. Thanks for taking time out to catch up on the chapters and to leave a comment on your response to the latest plot. I'm so glad you approve of Danny Boy - as have many others. It did indeed seem like a very appropriate song, both generally as you said and also for that occasion. I'd been hoping to mention it for a while and then I suddenly realised that was exactly the right time for her to sing it.

As for what else is on her list, well you have to understand Penny is younger than me (*wink*) so there's probably a couple of things that she knows that I don't. I do think there's a couple of Simon & Garfunkle songs on there, or possibly Paul Simon solo (something from the Graceland album perhaps?) - her mother would have had those kicking about somewhere. If it was me I would include a Jethro Tull song or two, but dunno if Penny would know those. It's always possible, though. I reckon she's been trying to remember the words to a few Chris de Burgh songs (again - her mother's record collection), and the full words to a few traditional songs she might know of, such as "Molly Malone". But anything slowish with reasonable lyrics would do, IMHO. :)

Apologies for the delay in getting the next chapter done - life is even more chaotic than usual, and likely to remain so for the forseeable future. The chapter IS coming, just slowly.

I've just found your story and I wanted to say that it's well written and excellent. Please post the next chapter soon, I can't wait to see what happens...

Author Reply: Thank you, and thanks also for daring to read the entire thing from scratch even though it's now so hugely long!

As for chapters - well, RL is incredibly busy and, as you've possibly noted in more recent Author's Notes, I can't vouchsafe how quickly chapters arrive these days. Current advice is assume a chapter a month and if I can get it out quicker, so be it, but sometimes it can be longer than that (even a lot longer). However, the moment a chapter is done it's sent to the betas and the moment they return it it's posted - that much I CAN say. :)

Arvain and Halladan ... what a typical brother moment!

The farewell between Arwen and Penny was very touching - and I'm not at all surprised that the elves are finding this difficult to cope with.

While Penny is remarkably skilled at putting herself in just exactly the wrong place at the wrong moment! Between the young Rohir and Corunir, she had a good night!

Dreadful as the parting of Arwen and Elrond is, in some ways they probably both want it to be over now. It's not, after all, going to get any better for being dragged out. Poor them.

Hee - glad you thought so.

I agree about Elrond and Arwen not wanting to have it dragged out. I am writing the following morning now and that seems to be the only way to look at it. What with packing the camp up and reading for the off there is actually little time for sentimentality in an odd kind of way.

OMG! I could hear that "thwap" on the face clear from arda. I must admit though I feel a little sorry for the other young man who had insulted penni when he was drunk on the last visit. To his credit he was obviously embarressed by his actions and man enough to act polite and face the music now that he was in a more sober state, unlike corunir the little snit.

I also noted the reference to what is happening in the shire. Will penni spill the beans about Saruman and the shire? Will she realize what the lack of pipeweed must mean? This was a wonderful chapter as always . Poor penni. She keeps bumping into men who take her wrong or want more than she will give. Of course that makes it a great read! I am thrilled you updated so quickly and I look forward to the next chapter coming soon. (Can we say addicted?)

Things in the Shire have possibly not started to get bad just yet - it will take quite some time for the men and half-orcs to wend their way up the Greenway and then to cross Arnor. It's only when Saruman joins them that it really begins to get very nasty.

But just to explain: the thing about the pipeweed running low was not a reference to the Shire at all. :) It was a simple matter of fact. The Dunedain smoke and would only have brought so much with them and are, frankly, running out of what they had once they had pooled their resources. The hobbits only had what they had thanks to what they found at Orthanc.

There is no established trade route for pipeweed out of The Shire. Indeed pipeweed is unknown outside of The Shire other than with Gandalf and the Dunedain. That was what so extraordinary about the finding of the pipeweed at Orthanc - it showed Saruman had had business with The Shire that no one had known about before: it was a secret deal he had had going.

The Greenway has yet to be opened and made safe - that won't happen for some time yet - so there is no likelihood of pipeweed coming south for quite some time (if ever), so there is no trade route to be disrupted. That was not what I meant by the pipeweed running low - I only meant their own personal supplies they had brought with them were more or less gone (and had probably been low for quite some time - I imagine they'd been eking it out for quite some time even before now, rationing it in effect).

Glad you enjoyed the chapter, though. :D

Oh wow! I wasn't expecting another chapter this soon! What a lovely surprise! I just loved the fight between the brothers in the morning, boys will be boys!

Author Reply: Well, I did say it would not be long in coming - most of it was already written when I posted chapter 42. ;)

boys will be boys
Oh, indeed they will. :D

This was a very fun chapter. Starting off with Arvain's hangover, and Penny's dismay at realizing that she'd be traveling with a whole bunch of people in the middle of nicotine withdrawal, and on to the account of both the Rohirric and Gondorian idiots getting their come-uppance.

I have to say the "young Rohirric lord" comported himself much better than Corunir did. (And I do hope you will reveal Aragorn's punishment!)

Of course, all the farewells are very sad, but I think that the conversation between Arwen and Penny was very revealing and very comforting.

And I *do* like the protectiveness of all her guardians--official *and* unofficial!

Author Reply: Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it all. :) Corunir's fate will be explained in the next chapter. I'm so glad you found Arwen's comments 'comforting' - they were intended to be precisely that. :)

*happy bouncage*

I love you and all your characters.

(Definitely not excluding tense and glowering Dunadain.)

Author Reply: *lol* Thank you for that. ;D
