Trivial Matters  by Thundera Tiger 18 Review(s)
EthareiReviewed Chapter: 1 on 10/29/2005
Tee-heee, I see what you mean about it being inane :-P Truly, sweets, I cannot for the life of me figure out how you can make such a small, innocuous scene as Faramir pulling Legolas' proverbial beard into a delightful little reading experience. The simplicity and sense of... pettiness? childishness? appealed to me greatly. Maybe I just like seeing our big dashing heroes *not* being dashing heroes ^_^ And sometimes it's the small scenes like this that really make characters come alive, and characterization, I think, is one of your biggest strengths. Mind you, at the end of it I was rolling my eyes and muttering "Men!", though no offence to any male members who happen to come by and read that *g* Thank you for another gem, Thundera, it certainly gave me a lovely tickle!

Thank you for such a wonderful treat! I loved this slightly silly situation in which our heroes are thrown. And I like your Faramir: I am beginning to grow tired of stories where he doubts his own name and bows to Aragorn without stopping. It's so nice to see them communicating like two normal adults without any personality disorders!

And poor, poor Leggy... slurp... :-p

Hilarious! Poor Legolas--what a thing for the King and Steward to do to him. I loved it!

This was hilarious and so very true to life !

Author Reply: Thank you. I know it's a bit too true to my life, but I'm rather juvenile in certain areas...

*chuckle chuckle* That was amusing. I love humor involving the Three Hunters... even though there were only two present in this story. One of those things one never really thinks about...slurping wine. I confess that I never thought someone would actually engage in this activity, whether acidentally or to annoy an elf. Clearly, I am ignorant when it comes to trivial matters. Keep writing!

Author Reply: Well, Gimli did manage to sneak in as the one who discovered the slurping thing. I like to keep my Hunters together. ;) As for purposefully doing this...well, I've done it a couple of times to certain members of family. If you're bored, I highly recommend it.

I can't say I blame Legolas.

The thought of Gimli experimenting on ways of driving Legolas mad is hilarious - as is the image of Faramir slurping all morning on the same glass of wine.

You are far too clever for your own good - this is a delicious piece of writing. I love it. More. Please.

Author Reply: Thank you very much for such a kind review, and I'm glad you liked the implied backstory in this. It took me a while to come up with it. Sad, I know, but I couldn't figure out a way for Faramir to discover Legolas's aversion to slurping. Then Gimli provided the answer in the form of rural Rohan. Oh, the many uses for a Lord of Aglarond.

I loved that internal dialogue Legolas was having about his talents, experience and credentials as he was slowly being driven NUTS by the slurping. That was hilarious, Thundera! ~TF

Author Reply: Thank you! I liked the opening scene, too. It was intended to set up a chain of escalation as well as initiate a couple of contrasts that would play into the story later. I have no idea if it managed the contrasts, but many people have caught the chain of escalation. Kudos to you for joining them!

Goodness! One can only express thanks that they don't have straws and milkshakes in Middle-earth. Or rootbeer floats (sad to say--I love rootbeer floats nearly as well as chocolate ice cream sodas, which are about as rare as Entwives in my experience). The slurping that goes on around here when such treats have been acquired does not bear thinking about.

Perhaps certain members of our family are closely related to Legolas, or Aragorn. Others are definitely not.

Author Reply: I've got family members who have slurping aversions. I don't have a problem with it personally, but it's very distressing to my mother, in particular. It's actually rather funny. We try to avoid the milkshakes in her presence when we get down toward the bottom of the cup.

How funny! Although I have to agree with Legolas, it is so annoying when people slurp their food! I've been known to get up and leave the table when someone is slurping, lol. This was great - I love to see a light-hearted Faramir as well :)

Author Reply: Ah, another anti-slurper. Personally, I've never had a problem with slurping, but I know people who do and they're very touchy about it. It seemed like an aversion I could give to Legolas. And you're welcome to take the light-hearted Faramir home with you, if you wish. You just have to watch him carefully, because if not, he'll set up these very clever traps for you to fall into and then he'll sit back and laugh at you when you can't get out.

Clever! Nice to see them having fun. Though the subject is silly (& refreshing), each manner of speaking from Faramir and Aragorn seem completely in character.

Author Reply: I'm glad you thought these guys were somewhat in character. I'm not at all certain of that myself, but I did try to give it a Tolkienesque feel admid the silliness. And in my defense, parts of The Hobbit were also very silly. ;)
