How delightful...hehehe I think I read a variation of this story when I was a kid! I can just see Sam telling it--wonderful! *applauds*

This is so wonderfully creative!! As delightful to read as it was for Pippin to hear :) Wonderful!!

Very cute! Love it. And his mother finally figured out the right direction to give him. Poor Tom Tarrytoes. Think I'll tell this version of the story to my small great nieces.

How clever of you to find the original of this story! I've heard it told in other forms, but this is certain to be the original, just like the Professor's own original of "Hey Diddle Diddle." And to think that it came from the Shire...

Excellent job!

Research does have its benefits, doesn't it! And the Shire was the source of much creativity. So glad you enjoyed.

I love the inevitability of good fairy stories - the sort of thing that can have you joining in, even if you don't really know it - and this is lovely. I'm not surprised Pippin enjoyed it. It must have sent him back to sleepless nights as a child.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. This actually is a traditional tale called "Jack Gets a Job", which also has a variant for Juan Bobo from Puerto Rico that I know about (and there are probably others.) I just reworked it a little, changed the ending, and made up poetry for the repetitive elements because I thought that was more hobbity. It's great fun to tell to kids in the original, because their faces are so expressive as they realize what Jack is going to do next.

Now it is just as well that I am home alone because I was chanting and chortling along with Pippin. Good timing as it is just coming up to pantomime season here in England and this would make a good one!

I'm glad people are enjoying it! And it would make a lovely pantomime.
