| How clever of you to find the original of this story! I've heard it told in other forms, but this is certain to be the original, just like the Professor's own original of "Hey Diddle Diddle." | I love the inevitability of good fairy stories - the sort of thing that can have you joining in, even if you don't really know it - and this is lovely. I'm not surprised Pippin enjoyed it. It must have sent him back to sleepless nights as a child. Author Reply: From Rabidsamfan: I'm glad you enjoyed it. This actually is a traditional tale called "Jack Gets a Job", which also has a variant for Juan Bobo from Puerto Rico that I know about (and there are probably others.) I just reworked it a little, changed the ending, and made up poetry for the repetitive elements because I thought that was more hobbity. It's great fun to tell to kids in the original, because their faces are so expressive as they realize what Jack is going to do next. | |
