If only he had done this....

Lovely imagery here. Denethor unspoiled.

Excellent AU Denethor drabble! What a wonderful legacy this would have been for Faramir, whether Denethor lived or fell, rather than the tragic and shameful immolation. And I love the idea of a sane and strong Denethor battling side by side with Imrahil on the Pelennor. Branwyn, please DO write "kickass Denethor" - it would be something to see him meet up with Aragorn on the field and ask "Well, Captain Thorongil, what kept you?"....

Love, love, love this possibility & I believe it's highly possible to have happened if Denethor hadn't been swayed by the stone. I think him handing the White Rod to Pippin is far less likely though - Mithrandir perhaps - but the thought of Denethor dashing off to defend his city & reliving his days of battle is most satisfying.

Author Reply: Thanks so much for writing! Ever since I wrote this, I have been plagued by the idea of writing an alternate universe story where kick-ass Denethor takes up arms and fights beside Imrahil at the City gates. :-D

What a powerful vision of Denethor-who-might-have been, firm in his commitment to his duties as Steward, and resolute in his defense of the City. An encouraging vision of what might have been.
