How wonderful! I'd just like to say, there are no flaws in your depictions of the hobbits. And of Gandalf, in this story, I LOVED the dialogue you chose. I could hear him speaking in my head perfectly... it's as if it came straight out of the book itself! Very impressive!

Re-reading this to finalize my MEFA vote, I'm reminded of just how much I love this one.

"No shaking, scaring, or screaming," the young hobbit recited dutifully. "No tickling, tugging off covers, or nose-tapping. No poking, pouncing, or prying open eyelids.

Oh, so cute! I seem to remember some other stories of yours that involve Pippin waking (or trying to wake, or trying not to wake) Frodo. Always one of my favorite scenes!

Wonderful . . . great to hear from you again, Budgielover. I just love your stories. Happy writing!

Esamen

Author Reply: Hi, Esamen! That part was written by Marigold, who expanded a comment of Pip's into that delightful scene. This story was rather a departure for me (nothing got blown up, burned down, or washed away in a raging river...) so I am glad that you enjoyed it. Thank you for your review!

Oh, Budgie, this is lovely! I can just see it all happening in my mind's eye, their voices ring so true, the message so clear. Thanks for writing this. :-)

Author Reply: There must have been at least one such conversation among the hobbits, right, PP? I was thinking of incorporating this into a longer story that is still simmering, but decided to go ahead with it and see if people liked a story that didn't have much action. Your response encourages me - thank you.

Gayle,
I must me psychic, because just yesterday I had thought about the very first paragraph of this story and was trying to remember who posted it and when, and lo and behold, it is posted this morning by you! I think I read this on LJ first, and now here. Same review as before, just marvelous darling! Marvelous.

Author Reply: You must be! To have you say that you were thinking about this story, trying to remember who posted it and when, is just so humbling. I know you too have felt humbled when someone thinks about one of our stories - it is encouraging and humbling at once. Thank you for your kind words!

I don't usually read hobbit fic (not because I don't like them, I just don't know them as well so its harder to get into). But I read this one because I enjoyed your fic with the whole Fellowship (The Forest has eyes, I think it was called). Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I loved the Rules for waking Frodo (too funny) and the need for a new ammendment. I can so see the conversation going on in the books--Tolkien missed an opportunity that you claimed. And I loved all the little subtle signs of their deeds interspersed until you got to the part where it hits Frodo. Very well handled angst--not over-the-top. Very genuinely motivated and deserved.

I don't know the hobbits very well as I said, but this fits what I remember from the books very well. Very in character and very well written. Great job.

Author Reply: Ah Elliska, we shall convert you to the ranks of hobbit-lovers... Join us... Come to the dark side... *grins*

Thank you for your kind words - your comment about 'claiming' an opportunity Tolkien missed really made me think. What an insightful way of putting it. I'm glad you didn't think the story boring - always a danger when the story-line consists of dialogue instead of action. Thank you for this inspirational and thoughtful review.

This made me hungry. LOL A wonderful story and a very nice look at how Frodo must have felt upon learning all that everyone else had been through. Now, I must get a snack of some sort, maybe some chicken?

Author Reply: I have to confess, GW, that our beloved beta Marigold wanted this story - I was hesitant to tackle it as 'dialogue stories' are not my forte. I handle burning things down and blowing them up better than sitting and quietly talking... *grins* I'm glad you think it succeeded, and appreciate that you caught the thread of humor that runs through it.

Ah, I love it when dh reads to the little ones and I have time to properly savour a story, and respond!

Your sparkling wit continues to delight:

The Rules! Haw!

"Perhaps you will have to make an Amendment."

"How did you get past Sam? I told him I was not be annoyed by younger cousins."

"Put that sausage back on my plate, Pip. I saw you. If you want another, you get up and get it."

"We have sat here and missed elevenses! No wonder I am so hungry!" He stuffed the last of the bread into his mouth and hopped off the bench, handing the basket to Sam. "Are you going to sit there all day? I’m ready to eat!" (What has he been doing all this time?)

Sam endured this with good grace, though the wizard noted that he used the opportunity to transfer the remaining contents of the basket to his pockets.

And then, in the middle of some skilfully drawn angst: "I shudder to think of what your mothers are going to say to me."

A very hobbity touch: A bowl of candied fruit bits kept him pleasantly occupied while Frodo dressed.

He refrained from mentioning that Pippin sometimes still did the same thing.
Have you written a Cormallen story which references this? I cannot remember.

And now this bit, just as I had stopped to admire your power of description, as the hammers of the workers were still echoing in my ears:
"No one ever said to stay out," Merry responded reasonably as Pippin edged past them both.

"They said stay out of the kitchens," Pippin repeated, plopping himself down on a bench and ticking off on his fingers. "Stay away from the bakery and butteries, and no rummaging in the pantries. And the sweets vendors are to paid immediately," he added mournfully, "not promised credit. I think Aragorn is being unfair on that one. I would have paid as soon as I had any coin. After all, it isn’t as though I was accepting their offers to give me anything I wanted without having to pay at all."

"Aragorn is going to be a wise king," Frodo said firmly, putting an end to that discussion.

Ah, Merry is so wise! "Don’t you dare take the credit for yourself." "It was worth it, I think." "All that we did was what we could."

Aargh! Right in the middle of serious business you have me chuckling!
"We are our own hobbits," Merry continued, shifting his leg out of the reach of impertinent cousins.

I always expect the best when I open a "Budgielover" story. And I always get it.

Author Reply: Ah, Lindelea, you are so generous. Thank you so much for picking up on the serious parts of the story, and I appreciate so much that you commented on the humor that softens and humanizes it. This was the first 'dialogue' story I have ever tried, and actually meant it to be part of a larger story, which is still roiling around in the sea of imagination. The bit about Frodo 'counting steps' is something I have meant to write for a long time - it just might turn up in that longer story. Someday. Thank you so much for this encouraging and thoughtful review.

Very nice. Well written, and a good gap filler. Looks like partly movieverse and partly bookverse.

Author Reply: Hi, Larner! Yes, you are right. Somewhere between Movieverse and Bookverse lies Fanfictionverse. Isn't it a joy that we can take a moment from canon and create our own expansion of it? The masterpiece could be ten thousand pages long and the movie could be a hundred hours long, and neither still would satisfy our appetites for LotRs. Thank you for your review.
