The Misty Month  by Le Rouret 21 Review(s)
eucalyptusReviewed Chapter: 4 on 1/15/2008
Oh, that was such a pleasure to read. Hisime -- what a beautiful name! I think my favourite aspect of your writing is the dynamic between Eowyn and Legolas. Legolas seems to regard her as the lady Eowyn is but with the respect he would afford his most skilled and honourable fighters, or at least that is the sense I get in their interaction even if you don't explicitly state that. It's almost asexual in nature, even though we know it isn't -- he is well aware that she is a woman and she is well aware that he is a male elf, and so their customs require that they treat each other a certain way. I like the duality that implies. The fact that is married is only part of the puzzle.

Because of that, I find that moment where she is confronted with the reality that he must deliver her baby so cool, because sex suddenly becomes an issue between them. Eowyn finds herself in a position of weakness and it takes Legolas confessing he has never laid with another for her to swallow her indignities to do what needs to be done. Sex becomes the power broker -- it tips the scales one way, and then it tips them back. We learn so much about them in their interaction at that moment.

Thank you for the story. I loved it.

Ah...well done! Although, I do wish you had her born closer to her due time.
Too many problems with 7 month old infants can occur. My only other
thought was that, hopefully, the other kids would not talk about "hissy fits".
Oh, well. 'Tis a beautiful story.

That was great. Still, I don't think Legolas realizes yet what he's got himself into. ;)

Ah, what a sweet ending! And I do like the explanation for the name you'd been using for Eowyn's daughter. Alas, it does not appear that Legolas is going to shuck that title for a long, long time. Oh, and they used to EAT the afterbirth? Oh my. I can understand the reasoning, and it probably would be healthy for the mother (I know that cats eat the afterbirth, and also any kittens born stillborn), but still. Yeesh.

I just love the conversation back and forth throughout the labor and birth especially when Eowyn says "Cease with the My Ladies and call me Eowyn. You have lifted my skirts enough times." Very funny. You have really captured these two characters. Even my daughter, who is a self-proclaimed Eowyn expert agrees. I'm the self-proclaimed Legolas expert. Another terrific chapter.

Sigh! Perfect. Just perfect. I'm so sad it's over. It was a true pleasure Le Rouret. Please don't keep us waiting long for another of your wonderful stories.

What a lovely story this is - I have thoroughly enjoyed discovering how Legolas gained his reputation as the midwife of choice to the aristocracy of Gondor.

And, as I recall, it's a pretty accurate description of childbirth too! I feel for Eowyn.

Okay, first off, that bit about the placenta was absolutely gross and I've never heard of any such thing among people. *making gagging noises* This does not mean I'd like to have examples, thanks just the same. lol

It is a wonderful thing the rest of this chapter was so darling! *vbg* Faramir being so anxious to get to his wife and child was so sweet! I love it that they wanted Legolas to name the munchkin and little did the Elf know when he poo poo'ed what Faramir was telling him about noble ladies wanting him to attend their births. LOL I loved that! *still snickering*

A truly wonderful little story and I cannot wait to see what other treasures you write for us! :):):)

Very well done! I truly believed I was there for the birth, that was so well written and SO realistic. Ouch! LOL And the witty banter between the two is just darling, you've gone and made me green with envy again. *vbg*

Legolas' mention that it was neither his nor his mother's wish that he attend that first birth makes me think of what Tolkien says in LACE, that the Elves believed that being a warrior lessened one's abilities as a healer. Well, even if that is the case, clearly it hasn't hurt Legolas all that much.

Speaking as one who has yet to experience childbirth (thank the Valar) I must say that this story is something of an education! And it's also a lot of fun to read. My sympathies to poor Eowyn, but I'm rather sorry that the birth is over. It means that the story will be ending soon as well, and I'm enjoying it.
