We did stop and ask directions, and the fellow said he’d go one better and show us the way himself, though I wouldn’t trust him any further than I could paddle a boat

We all badly need a wash, even Mr. Frodo. I know, you always say Ponies sweat, gardeners perspire, and gentlehobbits sort of glow but to tell the truth, even gentlehobbits can be in need of a bath sometimes, though it would never do to say so.

Those were the parts that were funny to me just now, the first more.

Author Reply: "even gentlehobbits can be in need of a bath sometimes..." One does wonder what the working hobbits really think of the gentry (who can better afford to make mistakes) sometimes.

Thanks so much for reading and pausing to share your thoughts!

They had a grand moot today with all the visitors {Sam calling it a moot!}

Master Peregrin Took wants a good deal of looking after, I'm afraid. Do you know how you taught me never to chuck things down a well? Seems as if he don't have enough sense to stuff a turnip

My favorite parts from this chapter.
Sam doesn’t mention Boromir tossing the pebble into the lake, but maybe he doesn’t know, and the Gaffer wouldn’t care anyway.

Author Reply: I love it when people tell me their favorite parts.

Ah yes, the pebble in the lake. Bill the Pony certainly noticed. I hadn't thought about Sam... he was rather preoccupied by the thought of parting with Bill at the time, I think.

Thanks!

These letters are so much fun. My mum used to quote that saying at me too. I am glad that Sam got to use his rope. I always think that the stuff PJ has them using in the film is a trifle thin even for real elven rope.

Author Reply: Yes, funny how those old sayings stick with us.

That rope *did* look awfully thin. I should think it would be hard to get a grasp.

Thanks!

These are good fun, Lin :-) I like how he keeps talking about taters. I loved the barrow-wight - a fellow that stole the shirts off our backs! LOL

I hope you finish out the trip :-)

Author Reply: LOL, working on it. Also got Bill's trip to finish. Whew!

This is so charming--I love it!

My favorite line, which made me laugh out loud: "They badly need a good gardener here, but I don’t think the wages would suit." :D

Author Reply: I do so love it when people quote their favourite lines!

Thanks!

*snerk* I do love Sam's style in this, LOL! The bit about asking directions was hysterical!

Well, we do know Sam will get his look at an oliphaunt soon enough!

Author Reply: LOL, ain't it the truth?

Big Folk and Oliphaunts--and they'll soon have their fill of both! Untrustworthy fellow indeed. And needing baths. Yes. Good thing Hamfast can't read anyway, I think.

Author Reply: LOL, I suppose he'd have to go down to the Ivy Bush and buy someone a beer in exchange for reading a letter to him. OTOH, considering the importance of gossip in the Shire, perhaps the reader would render the service for free!

"Reunion", eh? I thought I'd read that, but don't recall the details. (Of course, if I didn't leave feedback, then I probably didn't read it!) Will have to look it up again.

Oh, I'm so glad he realizes Mr. Frodo wants a good deal of looking after! Wonderful, Lindelea!

Author Reply: Thank you!

I've always seen Sam as having this basis of rock-solid good sense.

Okay--the Black Riders and Wights are "shady fellows" and Aragorn is "Grubby"? Now, that's a new one! How did I manage to miss this?
