They are leaving the next morning, without him. They are going off to fight while he waits and can do nothing. Why? If the Army is defeated, all will be lost anyway, so why not let him go too? But they will not.

Just before bed, a surprise visit: Éomer. He takes Merry's hand.

"I wished to thank you for saving my sister," the King of Rohan says. "If you had not acted as you did, I would now be without kin in this world. I pledge that I will do my best to see that your kin survive as well."

And Merry's throat tightens.
