If there had ever been a time when she hadn't bossed him, insulted him, or singled him out for her pranks, he couldn't recall it. Truth to tell, he had always given as good as he got, and had even deliberately provoked her a few times -- well, make that several.

But today was Pervinca's birthday, and she was now of age. In two days he would leave to help Frodo move. And he might never come back. So he hugged her and said, "I love you, Vinca."

And she gave him a handkerchief embroidered with the initials they shared. "Be careful, Pippin," she said.
