I lost count of how many times I laughed aloud in the reading. Genius! Pippin as Designated Driver! LOLOLOL How I love these hobbity conversations and asides and wanderings and ponderings. (And I have to agree with Merry and Frodo... remembering that excruciatingly long chase and mine cart ride through the goblins' underground caverns, it all too closely resembled a video game; at least that's my impression from my recollection of watching it in a theatre.) At some point, (perhaps it was the mention of Bored), I was reminded of the Harvard Lampoon's Bored of the Rings, which I actually found much more readable than LOTR as a youngster. At least, I read all the way through that slim volume well before I was able to read LOTR to its end. I started Fellowship three times, if I'm remembering right, only to be defeated by the Party chapter, which went on and on and on... so boring, I thought. It was only the fourth (?) reading attempt, when I skipped the Party chapter altogether, skimmed through "The Shadow of the Past", and got into "Three's Company" that the plot picked up steam. By the time we reached Weathertop, I was hooked. (Of course, since then, I have thoroughly read the entire work, including the Prologue and Appendices, multiple times and, eventually, purchased the twelve-book set, along with many supplemental works.) If you should ever run across this review, I hope this finds you well. (((hugs)))

How I love a clever Prologue. (I miss your writing, but I understand from personal experience how whimsical - or do I mean capricious? - the bunnies can be. Now that I have time for reading again, I'm revisiting old favourites and discovering new ones. Is there any chance you might republish the Yuletide stories to make them permanently available? Or did you, already? I will have to look.) I don't know if or when you will see this, but I'm sending warm thoughts in your direction all the same.

Hope you get this. I’m leaving this as a guest. Really enjoyed the story

This was enjoyable

poppymuddyfoot · 5 September 2018 · Chapter 0: Spoilers for the Hobbit films in this story, just saying...

I know you probably won't see this, but just in case, I want you to know how much I enjoyed it. When I realized what you were doing, I laughed out loud, and I didn't stop giggling until the end. (Even though I agree with Merry's view.) I know you've moved on, but you should know your stories are still bringing joy to others. Namarie, and God bless you.

Author's reply

Ok, I wasn’t expecting to find a review here. Thank you so much! I know you left this a year ago so I’m sorry for the very slow response. Still, if you are out there checking your emails I hope you know that your review brightened my day.

Kelsin79 · 12 March 2015 · Chapter 1: One

O.M.G!!! I just happened to check your page and saw that you wrote another story!! I thought you stopped writing! I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I am that you are still writing! I hope and pray that there is more to come. You are truly gifted and I could read your Hobbit stories forever! :)

Author's reply

Thank you so much! I appreciate your comments and I am so sorry for not responding sooner. I had an email problem and somehow failed to get any notifications. It wasn't anything on SOA's part, just my silly email but it gas been corrected now and so I wanted to tell you how happy your review made me. I don't write often anymore as the plot bunnies all seem to have hopped away to greener gardens, but it is very nice to be missed. Thank you taking the time to review and again, my apologies for this late response. People who review deserve better.

Karri · 11 January 2015 · Chapter 1: One

Very entertaining!

Thank you, and so sorry for the slow response. I had email issues and didn't get any notifications for a while. Thank you for reading and leaving a comment.

Everlight · 4 January 2015 · Chapter 1: One

What a great little story! Loved Pippin's perspective of counting the drinks and Merry's upset over the book being changed. I am most definitely sided with Merry on this one; but great to get the other perspectives. “If you ask me, they should never had been allowed in the same room,” Merry said showing his distaste. :D I just love your Merry! Oblib's name through me for a bit before I realized that it was Bilbo backwards. Nice job with the names, gave me quite the laugh! And Sam was perfect, just perfect. =) It's great to see you back. I have been a fan of your stories since I found them last year. You have a great ear for dialog and humor.

Author's reply

Thank you so much for this lovely review. Usually I respond much quicker to the nice people who take time to comment but I had email issues and did not get any of my notifications for a while. So sorry that I didn't respond sooner. I'm very pleased that enjoy my version of Merry. Somehow when I write it is usually his voice that I hear strongest. Thank you again for your kind words and for reviewing. If I have failed to respond to other comments you have left, my sincere apologies. I think people who review deserve a response. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Raksha The Demon · 4 January 2015 · Chapter 1: One

You had me ROFLing at the name Armulus. And then Token! And I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of it. Loved the differences between the hobbits' reactions. Very well done!

Author's reply

Thank you so much. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Sorry I am slow in responding to your lovely comment but I had email issues and didn't get any notifications for a while. Thank you again.

poppymuddyfoot · 30 December 2014 · Chapter 1: One

Oh, I like this way to reconcile the differences. Very well done. Your stories always make me smile. I'm very glad you published this one. Thank you.

Author's reply

Thank you for that lovely review! I'm so glad you enjoyed this one. Thank you for reading. I love knowing how people felt about the story.

Andrea · 29 December 2014 · Chapter 1: One

LOL!!! That was great! I agree with Dreamflower that already "the patented GW dialogue" was worth reading the story. And the names! Too funny! I especially like "Bored the Bowman" and "Milkweed". So, each hobbit has a different opinion about the new book. I can understand all of them, but personally I find myself somewhere between Merry and Pippin ;-) These folks, Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens, they took the book and changed it in an effort to give it wider appeal.” “I bet one of them is an Elf,” Merry said in a grumpy tone. Yes, definitely!

Author's reply

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the review since this is the only thing I've written all year. It's encouraging to hear from people and to know that some of them liked this. The names were fun to come up with. Milkweed was one of my favorites too. lol I was glad to have enough hobbits to be able to give most points of view. I'm more like Merry but I still enjoyed the third film largely due to the amazing acting. Martin Freeman was perfect all the way through the film. When you see it, I think you'll be impressed by that too even if the film doesn't do it for you. Thank you again and it's great hear from you. I love it when someone I used to see on here is *still* around. So many aren't.

Andrea · 29 December 2014 · Chapter 0: Spoilers for the Hobbit films in this story, just saying...

I really have missed those prologues! And although I haven't seen the third part yet, I'm going to read this story, because: It takes great effort to ignore something properly once you’ve seen it. ;-)

Author's reply

LOL Hello there, Andrea. It's been a while but I'm glad to see you still have your sense of humor. Thank you for risking the read in spite of the spoilers. You've saved yourself a lot of effort by not ignoring this. hehehe

curiouswombat · 28 December 2014 · Chapter 1: One

Hee! I like it! and I'm with Pippin, there's always room for a second take on things :)

Author's reply

I'm very glad you liked it. I tried to show both opinions on things. I figured if anyone would enjoy a new version of a classic it would be Pippin. : )

Garnet Took · 28 December 2014 · Chapter 1: One

This was a good little story. I think I fall mainly in Sam and Pippin's camp. I can definitley appreciate Merry's point of view though. I liked the movies but they just didn't have the impact for me that the book did. I came to tolerate certain character and really like some others. I felt let down that the deaths of some characters didn't affect me at all when I really liked them both in the book and the movie. Thanks for sharing this with us and we want to see more from you again. You're one of the authors I miss seeing around here.

Author's reply

Thank you so much for the review and the encouragement. It's very nice to know I've been missed. Thank you for that. I am glad there are four hobbits. It makes it easy to show both sides of things. I'm glad some of it reflected your feelings. I figured Sam would like a bit of romance. After all, he did have 13 children. : )

Garnet Took · 28 December 2014 · Chapter 0: Spoilers for the Hobbit films in this story, just saying...

Yay! Glad you wrote something and are posting it. I, for one, have missed you. I have the feeling I'm going to love this because of some of my feelings about "The Hobbit" movies. You are one of the funniest and most creative writers I know. Even your prologues are good. :) Can't wait to see what happens here. Please post more. We miss you.

Author's reply

Hi, Garnet! I miss you too. You aren't around on LJ much anymore. Miss seeing you there. (Hugs) This was odd. This story came to me all at once and I haven't been in the mood to write anything all year. This was it. I hope my muse is back but you just never know. Glad you enjoy my prologues. I like to have fun with them.

Dreamflower · 27 December 2014 · Chapter 1: One

“I’ve had too much ale this Yule,” Merry sighed. “As you do every Yule, Meriadoc,” Pippin yawned, stretching out on the sofa and closing his eyes. “No, I believe I've had more than usual I’d say,” Merry said thoughtfully. He peered at the book in his hands and frowned. “I lost count of your consumption this year so I dare not comment,” Pippin said. “And, as there were, and still are, a great many hobbits about, all of whom have likely had too much ale, I doubt you can put a number to it.” “You were counting?” Merry asked looking up from the book for a moment. “I always do in the beginning. Then things become slightly hazy and I begin to question myself. Was that number six or number nine, I say to myself. Those two always put me to some bother as upside down it’s one of them and right side up it’s the other, so usually I lose count at six,” Pippin said. “Of course, if I make it past six, then I tend to lose it at nine.” “No, I was meaning to ask, why were you counting my ales?” Merry said, more directly. You had to be direct with Pippin or you got such nonsense as that information about the sixes and nines. “I always do,” Pippin repeated raising up on the sofa, seemingly wide awake now when only just moments before he had looked about ready to drift off. “You make it a habit to count the number of ales that I have and you do this for what purpose?” Merry asked looking slightly annoyed. “Even my mum doesn’t count my drinks. Why would you?” “So I can see how many I should have,” Pippin said as if this made perfect sense. “So, you decide how many drinks you should have by counting mine?” “I do. I think it’s very practical of me. It might be one of the few practical things I do.” “How, by any stretch of the imagination, is this a matter of practicality?” Merry asked now more curious than annoyed. “Well, normally I come to these Yule events with you, so I like for one of us to be able to find our way home again. If I count your drinks, then I can determine if you will be able to get us home again or back to where ever we might be staying. If you’ve had too much then I know that the task will fall to me,” Pippin smiled. “If it’s my duty to see us home, then I try not to have more than is prudent.” Pippin as Designated Walker. *snerk* If that patented GW dialogue had been the only part of the story, it would have been enough for me! But you still had more up your sleeve! The Adventures of Oblib; ohmigosh, that's too funny! Poor Merry! I love the way each of the characters react: Merry indignant at the changes to something he likes the way it is; Pippin liking the extra adventure, and Sam the happily married enjoying the romance; while Frodo the scholar knows the whole history behind this mysterious second edition, LOL! And the names were hilarious--I especially liked "Token"! *grin* I'm so glad your Muse came back! I hope it doesn't take another long vacation, because the world NEEDS more GW hobbits! ((((((((hugs and hugs and hugs and hugs)))))))))))))

Author's reply

When I get a *snerk* from you then I know I'm on the right track. lol So glad you enjoyed it. I don't know if the world really needs more of my hobbits but if the muse sticks around then, there will be more. I had fun with the names. I wanted people to know who was who but it was fun playing with it all. I stuck Bergil into this one because Jackson's inclusion of a young lad in The Hobbit when he'd left poor Bergil out of the LOTR films struck me as kind of funny. As to Token, well, I think that one explains itself. lol I did try to show all opinions in this and thankful there were enough hobbits to do the job. Thanks so much for the lovely review. It's encouraging that people will still read this kind of stuff from me.

Oh how I've missed your prologues! You made me grin. I'm so glad to see you posting hobbits again! YAY! I am eager to see just what spoilers there are...

Author's reply

Thank you! So glad you got a grin out of this. I like to *play* with my prologues. lol Hope you enjoy the story.

Linda Hoyland · 27 December 2014 · Chapter 1: One

This was very cute and clever. I'll read Merry's original version!

Author's reply

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it and if any of the hobbit in this story reflected my opinions, Merry came the closest. For some reason, when I write, Merry nearly always gets to express my personal take on things, if I have one.

periantari · 27 December 2014 · Chapter 1: One

You are awesome! I love it! Morris Mapleshield, Token, Armulus, Bored, Boar... those are such great code names i love it! I agree with Merry's thoughts because they echo yours and mine! =) So great! Should link it to speedyhobbit for i'm sure she'll like it too. This is so great. I love it a lot! =) It's all our grievances towards PJ and i share them toO! :)

Author's reply

You are more awesome! hehehe The names were fun to come up with. I'm so glad you liked them. I knew that you, Speedyhobbit and I were in the Merry camp. The reviews are pretty even on it though so I'm glad I was able to show both sides of the issue. Thank goodness Tolkien gave us plenty of hobbits to play with. Thank you for this sweet review! (hugs)

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I am DYING with laughter over here!!! :-D How Absolutely PERFECT!!! (Huge round of applause) Please excuse the capitals and exclamations - I am completely serious. Your story is excellently written and I enjoyed it immensely! Thank you! If you can believe it, even after reading your prologue I was halfway through the story before I realized what you were doing...and had to go back to the beginning and read it again, this time with my smirk getting wider and wider as I read! :-D I will be sharing this with my brother who went with me to see the Battle of the Five Armies last week. Thank you again! ~Lossen

Author's reply

I don't mind the capitals or the exclamations at all. I'm just so glad that you enjoyed it. I hope your brother does too. Thank you for this lovely review and for taking the time to leave it. Your exclamations and capitals are much appreciated and so I give you a big, THANK YOU!!!!!

Oh, dear, love it! Goes to show it takes all kinds to make the world turn! Did love the discussion regardin Aragorn and Arwen marrying over Elrond's disapproval. We have so missed you!

Author's reply

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thankfully, I had enough characters and was able to show both opinions. I believe it comes off about even or I tried to make it even. LOL That bit with Aragorn and Arwen just turned up as I was writing and I went with it. So glad you enjoyed that. Thank you for reading this one.

Well, thank you. Hope you've been well. I've missed writing and posting so I'm crossing my fingers that the muse has returned. We shall see. Good to hear from you.

Lindelea · 27 December 2014 · Chapter 1: One

Ha. (I repeat myself.) I love Pippin and Merry's conversation in the beginning. For the first thing, it sounds like they've both had a number of ales. For another, it explains the splendid parties that were evidently so talked about they made their way into a book -- no need to worry about finding one's way home, when one is the host. I once had a brother with this exact quality: Pippin had a way of taking you on a verbal side trip and making you lose the path. If you weren’t careful, the point of things got lost in the muddle. Oh, and was that a reference to Princess Bride? Milkweed! I love your creative re-names. “How could you be less-than thrilled with Strider?” Pippin objected. I can imagine a few scenarios. Between baths, for example. She isn’t supposed to be in the book. Reminds me of Sam saying, in Osgiliath, "We're not even supposed to be here!" (With which I was in complete agreement.) ...just so long as the ale isn't watered down... No no no, the Bowman would not have been the one to train the dragon. That would be his son. (Bergil? Where have I heard that name before?) This made me laugh out loud: “Whatever you are reading, it must require a lot of shouting,” Frodo said tying his robe about his waist. “I could hear Merry *reading* all the way in my room. Are you each taking turns reading aloud without me?” “Is there a point to this?” Merry asked. Reference to While You Were Sleeping perhaps? I can hope, anyhow. “The good one?” Merry objected as Frodo handed Sam the book. I know, Merry, I know. I had the same reaction when people told me how superior the film The Fellowship of the Ring was to the source. Yeah, that Jack in the Beanstalk... I can see Sam's version, should he rewrite the story. He'd make it Jack and the Tater Vine... potatoes and tomatoes are related, after all, and after you cut down potato vines (or rip them out) you still have the taters in the ground. Imagine the size of those taters! Still probably, couldn't hold a candle to the ones grown by the Gaffer, in Sam's opinion, I'm sure. Thank you for the most fun I've had in days. Maybe weeks. Months, even. Don't be a stranger. (notice the "a" in that sentence. definite shade of meaning.)

Author's reply

First, I love your detailed reviews. It lets me see what I've written from another POV. So very helpful and such fun! Thank you! Glad you caught the 'Bergil' reference. Since poor Bergil didn't make it into the LOTR films, I just substituted him for the child we did get in The Hobbit. lol As to The Princes Bride, I've never seen it. It drives a friend of mine half mad that I'm sure a geek in other ways but have never seen that classic film of geekdom. Now the While You Were Sleeping reference was intended. I just didn't expect anyone to catch it. Good job! So very glad you had fun reading this one. I will try very hard not to be "a" stranger. If my muse will stick around then I will keep on turning up. Thank you again for reviewing. So many of my old friends on here have moved on. It's great to see a familiar name. (hugs)

PIppinfan1988 · 27 December 2014 · Chapter 1: One

I'm convinced that SOA doesn't like Macs, lol. I need to figure out how to put the font to I size that I can read. Anyhoo....I'm with Merry!! Yes, I enjoyed the movies, and the first one showed real promise, but I am wholly disappointed with the Token character and the triangular love affair between her, Kell, and Armulus (sp? Can barely see it). I feel guilty complaining, but really, I could have done without all that. Loved the original!! Aside from that, your hobbit characters are still sweet and hilarious! I hope your Muse comes around more often!

Author's reply

When I was writing Merry, I let him say what I would like to say. You are in the same group as I am on that deal. : ) Good to know we still have things in common. That gives me a smile. I attempted to let Sam and Pippin enjoy the new version of things in order to show both sides and to give Merry something to rant about. hehehe I enjoy letting Merry blow off steam. I let Frodo be the voice of reason because, well, that's who he is, isn't he? Thank you so much for the review. I had no idea that you were still keeping a watch on things. I will be emailing you soon to chat. Good luck with the Mac! I am so jealous! (hugs)
