Laikwalâssê · 3 April 2012 · Chapter 23: Reassessing the Situation

Hi Fiondil,I have not reviewed this story until yet, not because, I do not like it,but I have some trouble following it. There are so many hints and jokes I can hardly understand and so many references to actual incidents or locations I have no knowledge of, but what I understand is so good and so much fun and I wanted you to simply know. Like this story very much and our hereos I know all the more well. Lai

Author's reply

Hi Lai. I can understand that some of what is written is topical or you need some knowledge of American culture to understand, but I am glad you are enjoying the story nonetheless and I appreciate you letting me know. Hopefully, you will continue enjoying the story and it doesn't get too confusing for you. And if you don't understand something in the story, you can always send me a PM and I'd be happy to explain it.

Erulissse (one L) · 3 April 2012 · Chapter 23: Reassessing the Situation

Well, at least Alex is reserving judgment, not running into full battle mode. And if he can see the light, he can be a valuable player. Dunedain, huh? Interesting linkage that you're making here. I love the fact that he only reacted over-the-top with the Lay, not any of the earlier histories. It looks like you've got quite a ways still to go on this, and I'll enjoy each chapter now that I'm finally caught up again. - Erulisse (one L)

Author's reply

Hi Erulisse. We'll be exploring more of Alex's supposed heritage in the next couple of chapters. And, yes, there is still quite a bit more of this story and I'm glad you are looking forward to more. Thanks for reading and reviewing. It's much appreciated.

Larner · 2 April 2012 · Chapter 23: Reassessing the Situation

At least they are all on the same page right now, and know what one another is capable of as well as being willing to cooperate. Now--how to deal with Farrell. Question: Is Derek there with an agenda of his own? Curious minds wish to know....

Author's reply

It does help if everyone is on the same page, doesn't it, Larner? *grin* We'll see if they continue being on the same page as events unfold. And yes, they now have to deal with Farrell and how that is accomplished will be seen shortly. As for Derek... we'll learn more about him and his role in all this soon enough. Thanks for taking the time to comment. It's much appreciated.

Soledad · 2 April 2012 · Chapter 23: Reassessing the Situation

I'm surprised how easily Alex has accepted the truth which, in our modern society, is a bit on the hair-raising side. Or will there be a backlash eventually? I think they should work on identifying all those agents in earnest before it will be too late, though. Farrell & Co won't hesitate to take out both Alex and Amroth, I'm afraid. As for who sent the photos... I suddenly have this mental image of Maranwë putting them into an envelope. After all, Alex was meant to go to the Academy, right?

Author's reply

HI Soledad. Well, Alex's training has probably helped him to appear calm and collected on the outside. I don't think the import of what he now knows has sunk all the way in yet, but it will, never fear. As for who might have sent the photos... Maiarin interference, heh? Now there's a thought.... We'll find out eventually what's up with the photos. You're right that they were the catalyst for getting Alex to the Academy when he wouldn't otherwise have been there. Thanks for your review. It's very much appreciated.

Sunny · 2 April 2012 · Chapter 23: Reassessing the Situation

Alex seems very calm and collected for someone whose worldview has turned upside down. I'm sure that in one part of his mind he is wondering, "What's next - the Easter Bunny?" And I'm sure another part of his mind _really_ wishes that the weekend had been a weird dream - or that the people at Edhellond were some kind of weird cult that for some reason had sprung for matching pieces of cosmetic surgery on their ears, and that the weird light-effects and what happened to him when Daeron sang were the result of something he ate... but Amroth and the others certainly were real enough - and so are his bruises from the other night, when Amroth worked on those old posthypnotic commands. I don't think Alex is quite ready for the concept of the Valar and the Maiar as yet. (Angels and Archangels, woot!) So are some other going to arrive at Edhellond during this story? And if so, who? Perhaps Maglor? Or a couple of Ellith who will proceed to turn the mighty Balrog-Slayer and his bardic sidekick into a pair of lovestruck idiots? (That little quip of Glorfindel's in a previous chapter, that he and Daeron were too old for that kind of nonsense, really deserves such a response from ... someone. And the Valar do like to meddle...) ;-)

Author's reply

Hi Sunny. Probably he seems so calm because it hasn't all sunk in yet, and don't forget, with his espionage background, he's used to regrouping on the run, as it were, and this probably doesn't feel any different for him just yet. As to your question about others arriving at Edhellond (and why does everyone expect Maglor to show up? That' so obvious!), we will have to wait and see. And ellith for Glorfindel and Daeron... now there's a nasty thought. LOL! Thanks for taking the time to read and review. It's much appreciated.

Lyana · 2 April 2012 · Chapter 23: Reassessing the Situation

A fragile alliance against Farrell and to find the other agents - well, it's a start! Alex has had so much to assimilate over just a few days; I'm glad Glorfindel is wise enough to let him chew on things for a while before dropping the bomb about the existence of Eru, the Valar and Maiar. Poor guy - his world is well and truly being turned upside down! Now to watch the spy vs. spy cat and mouse game play itself out... It feels like the calm before the storm.

Author's reply

Hi Lyana. A very fragile alliance and so much can go wrong with it without any of them half-trying. We'll see how things go from here. And it is indeed something like the calm before the storm. Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it very much.

Fantasia · 2 April 2012 · Chapter 23: Reassessing the Situation

Well, at least they are working together. As usual, this story is getting better and better.

Author's reply

Hi Fantasia. Glad you are still enjoying this story. Thanks for letting me know. I very much appreciate it.

6336 · 2 April 2012 · Chapter 23: Reassessing the Situation

Sort of a moving along chapter, not quite crossing 'i's' and dotting't's' yet but getting there! Farrell and the other agents are the sticking point, also who sent the photos in the first place, if it wasn't for them Alex could convince Maddie that all is well and there is nothing to worry officialdom. I think whoever sent the photos is the key to this whole thing, once they find out who that was all the other peices will fall into place. Oh, I can just see the Elves starting a baby sitting service, they would never have a free moment, they would be so busy! Boar hunting in Tavroble. Huggs, Lynda

Author's reply

Hi Lynda. Yea, this is something like a breather before the action starts up again. We'll see how things progress from here (not smoothly by any means). Thanks for taking time out from your boar hunting to leave a review. It's much appreciated. *grin*

harrowcat · 2 April 2012 · Chapter 23: Reassessing the Situation

Sorry I have been MIA with a nasty case of bronchitis - I could really have done with the Twins or our favourite lullaby-singer! Anyway - still here, still reading and still enjoying every minute of it. Too much to comment on but loving the Dunedain heritage.

Author's reply

Sorry to hear about the bronchitis, harrowcat. I hope you're well on the road to recovery. Thanks for taking a moment to let me know that you are still reading and enjoying the story. I appreciate you doing so very much.

someone · 31 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

Finally, the secret is out! "Racial memory"? Well, no matter the reason, that was the oddest reaction from Alex so far. You scared me for a minute with "And it was Artemus Gordon Meriwether who won out.", because I really thought that I had understood Alex' character wrong. Luckily, the Alex part of him took over in the end. It would have actually been disappointing, if he had believed and joined their conspirancy immediately, this was more realistic reaction from an agent. It must have been a shock to realize that his former teacher was actually a king. "He glanced at the Twins again. "And you let him live?" he asked in all seriousness. Daeron paled even more--" That was actually funny. It really seems odd that Daeron and the twins are friends, but is Daeron actually afraid of them?! Good thing that the twins don't have a problem with the less... nice characters from their family history. But when you start thinking about it, without Daeron's meddling Luthien and Beren might not have had to fetch the Silmaril, Eärendil would never have had it and no one could have reached Valinor without it, so perhaps Daeron can be forgiven.

Author's reply

Hi someone. Yes, the secret is finally out. And the 'racial memory' angle will play an important role in the story as you will shortly see. It's easy to forget that 'Alex' isn't real, that he is just a facade for 'Artemus' who is very much real and very dangerous. And I agree that it would've been unrealistic for him to put aside all his doubts and instantly join the Elves, and I try to strive for reality where my characters are concerned as to how they would react to any given situation. I don't think Daeron is afraid of the Twins, but certainly Alex's question, rude on one level, must've taken him by surprise, thus his reaction. And, as you point out, even Daeron's 'meddling' served a greater purpose. Thanks for taking the time to read and review. I appreciate it very much.

obsidianj · 31 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

Oh, boy. That was quite a revelation. I think I need some help in understanding the history of Daeron. I read the story of Beren and Luthien, but I don't remember Daeron. Alex (I refuse to call him Gordon or even worse Artemus) is at a turning point. I hope he decides to work with the elves. His Artemus side can be of great help. If he decides to turn away from the elves, I don't know what they can do except for arranging an 'accident'. I think I have to draw up my own list of people and names. I can't get them all straight. Maybe it is because I read this in little installments and not in one sitting.

Author's reply

Hi obsidianj. Quite a revelation, indeed. Daeron was in love with Lúthien and plays a minor but very important role in the story of Lúthien and Beren, essentially betraying them twice to Elu Thingol. Eventually, heart-broken when Lúthien chose to embrace mortality and cleave with Beren, he left Doriath, apparently never to be seen again, at least in Beleriand. Since his fate was never clearly stated by Tolkien, I decided he deserved to be 'resurrected' into the 21st century as the group's resident loremaster. Anyway, I know lots of people who make lists of names and geneologies to keep track of all the characters, so you aren't alone in not being able to keep them straight. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

obsidianj · 31 March 2012 · Chapter 21: The Last Picnic of the Season

Alex, Alex, you should know by now that Loren is not warning you lightly. But what is happening with Alex? He has a really strong reaction to anything elvish. Ambrose's story is chilling. He might have destroyed the actual evidence in form of physical files and papers, but what if Bradford told anyone else? And that person still lives? I have a bad feeling about this.

Author's reply

Hi obsidiandj. Well, maybe after this, Alex will heed Loren's warnings. *grin* And you may be correct about the possibility that Bradford might have told someone else. Perhaps we'll find out. Thanks for commenting. It's much appreciated.

Siiw · 30 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

He got to hear Glorfindel's lullaby! I would love to hear Elven song once... I don't know what to write, this chapter was great.

Author's reply

That's alright, Siiw. Just letting my know how much you enjoyed the chapter is music to my ears. Thanks for taking the time to let me know. I appreciate it. And I would love to hear an Elven song just once, too.

Soledad · 30 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

Wow! As revelations go, this is rather on the shocking side. Alex actually reacts better than most people would, I guess. But as this is only the beginning, I have the feeling that things can get a lot worse before they would start getting better. Beren, the one-handed dude. *shakes head in amusement* That would make a good title to a comical ballad. And poor Daeron...

Author's reply

Hi Soledad. I think Alex was too far into shock to react otherwise and his training took over automatically. In his line of work, you learn to think fast when the situation goes pear-shaped in some way. We'll see how things go once the shock wears off. "Beren, the One-handed Dude" does sound like the start of a C&W song, doesn't it? *grin* Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

Lady Edlyn · 30 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

And we have the great Reveal! Oh, my goodness! I could cut the tension in this chapter with a knife! I was rather irritated with Amroth when he refused to answer Alex's "Ambrose, for the love of God, did I hurt anyone?". It wouldn't have taken more than a second or two to reassure Alex, whose worry was completely understandable since the last time he blacked out he thoroughly destroyed a room and caused a bunch of injuries. And the fact that that would be the first thing to come to Alex's mind bodes well for the type of person he is under all the years of training and being an agent. The way you wrote this was so well done, meldonya. I could feel what Alex was feeling through the whole chapter. I wasn't surprised that Artemus Gordon won out between the the two personalities. After all, he has had a lot more experience at having (figurative and literal) bombshells dropped on him. And this one was a doozy. For a short while I thought that something awful was going to happen but then Alex popped back up. This could have gone pear-shaped so badly, but the Elves' response to Artemus was un-threatening and reassured him that his personal freedom wasn't going to be abridged. All in all, I think Alex handled things far better than I would. And of course, Glorfindel used the tried and true anti-insomnia method he learned from Lord Namo to help Alex sleep. Too bad I can't call and ask him to sing to me when I'm suffering from insomnia! Brilliant work, meldonya! I'm looking forward to Monday's chapter very much. Hugs! Edlyn

Author's reply

Hi Edlyn. I'm glad you found this chapter well written and very satisfying. And you're right that things could've gone badly if the Elves had responded to "Artemus' in a threatening manner. Luckily, they've had plenty of experience in dealing with Mortals who learn the truth about them. Thanks for taking the time to read and review. It's very much appreciated.

Lizbeth · 30 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

What a start to a chapter! I think I was almost as scared as Alex was that he had hauled off and attacked someone. I wonder why Amroth didn't reassure him sooner? "Revelation" is such a fitting name for this chapter, though perhaps it should have been plural, at least for me! *grin* Like Kaylee, I had forgotten about Daeron's betraying of Luthien. In reading your stories it's easy to sit back and just enjoy the characters and forget about the immense age of all the elves, and all the complications that come from living through history. Then you bring out a chapter like this, and I get mind-blown again. It's still enjoyable, of course, but all I can say is, "Wow." *eyes wide*

Author's reply

And two years later, I actually get around to answering your review, Lizbeth. I have no idea how I managed to miss it. Sorry about that. It's easy to forget the minor but important characters like Daeron and the roles they played in Elvish history. And it's easy enough to forget just how immensely old these Elves are and what complications they've encountered in living through history as they have. Anyway, please forgive me for not responding to this review earlier, and I hope I didn't miss any subsequent ones. I only found this one today because I'm re-reading the Elf, Academy series from the beginning to make sure there are no continuity problems that may have cropped up between one book and the next as I finish up with Elf Academy 3 and start working on Elf Academy 4.

Lyana · 30 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

Ahhhhhh - a very satisfying chapter! Lovely way to start a Friday. :-) Love the touch that Alex was reliving Beren's experience; seems fitting somehow - a young warrior, dogged by horror, wanders into an elven dream and is forever changed. Somehow, I think he'll do his ancestor proud. And love how he put the pieces together, learning about forgiveness and agelessness all at the same time. Very much looking forward to hearing Alex's internal dialogue on all that he's learned!

Author's reply

Hi Lyana. I'm glad you found this a very satisfying chapter. Thanks for letting me know. I really appreciate it.

Fantasia · 30 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

Finally! The truth is revealed. I just want to know who Alex really is and how important he is for the Elves and their mission. I'll say that he took it very well; I could had fainted right there for sure. Ah, I understand poor Alex and his frustration with Ambrose and his no-answers. Those elves are so cryptic.

Author's reply

Hi Fantasia. We'll find out soon enough about who Alex really is. And Elves love to be cryptic. You should know that by now. *grin* Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it very much.

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 30 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

Atto! So Emma's not here yet, she's been delayed. She's going to be here on Monday but probably only *after* I get to read and review the chapter. Anyway, I'll have the weekend to clean up things more around here and also to mull over what Alex/Artemus just learned. (You know, how about "Alex Gordon" for a name if he wants to go into hiding? He could drop both the rather distinctive parts of his real name, lol. Gordon could be a surname as well as a first or middle name. Or he could just be Alex Gordon Grant, perhaps. :) What do you think, Atto?) A descendant of Beren and Luthien through Arwen's line? Heh, that makes them Uncle Roy and Uncle Dan, now. *smirks* On rather the same level as Estel could have called Elrond "Uncle Elrond" (and in fact, when I've written Valandil of Arnor as a young boy, he *does* refer to ELrond as "Uncle".) I wonder what Alex (or Gordon, as he doesn't like Artemus) thinks of having two new uncles? Wow, you're right about Daeron...I'd *completely* forgotten that about him. I'm so glad the Twins forgave him! And now I know how old Serinde really is. Wow, is that hard to fathom...Aww, Amroth tucked Alex into bed after he was put to sleep. That's sweet. Waiting eagerly for Monday to see if Shane's Mum the Balrog shows up again! Not to mention the idiot from the Agency who thinks he's so hot, messing with poor Alex. *kicks him* Tye-melin! Kaylee

Author's reply

Hi Kaylee. You're very quick on the mark. You got Alex's relationship to Elladan and Elrohir correct and that will come up in a later chapter. Very good. *grin* And I suspect a lot of people either have forgotten or don't know about Daeron's involvement with Lúthien and Beren and the role he played in their story. As Elrohir tells him, it's ancient history and Daeron has paid for what he did in ways Alex can't comprehend so there's nothing to forgive. Thanks for reading and reviewing, yendenya. Tye-melin.

6336 · 30 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

Hm, Arwen's line eh!? Interesting concept, oh for a Time Machine! Makes you wonder who Alex' parents are! That lullaby would be handy to know, Oo! Oo! here's a thought, have the Elves teach it to Shane, then she can shut her mother up when she gets too annoying! You are spawning Plot Bunnies right, left and center. Chasing off hair eating goats. Huggs, Lynda

Author's reply

LOL! that's too funny, Lynda. I don't think it works if a Mortal sings it, though. Shane would need one of the Elves to come over and sing it for her. Anyway, enjoy your time with the goats and thanks for reading and reviewing. It's much appreciated.

Larner · 30 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

It does appear that he's indeed of Dunedain blood, and quite strongly at that. Alas that he must feel conflicted over his full realization of who and what they are. And unfair to pull Namo's lullaby on him! Heh! Channeling Beren? Heh! You never know how many times a soul might have been around!

Author's reply

It'll take Alex a bit of time to come to terms with what he's learned and there are still some surprises in store for him and the Elves concerning his ancestry as we will see over the next few chapters. I don't believe in reincarnation, myself, though I do believe in racial memory and that's more what Alex is experiencing. Thanks for commenting, Larner. It's much appreciated.

UTfrog · 30 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

Great way to start a morning. I think Alex's reactions were very normal given the amount of pure shock. I am eagerly waiting Monday. Thanks you so much.

Author's reply

Hi UTFrog. I'm glad you think Alex's reactions normal given the circumstances. We'll see how he reacts once he's had time to get used to the ideas of real Elves. Thanks for taking the time to read and review. I appreciate it very much.

Sunny · 30 March 2012 · Chapter 22: Revelation

Hooo! The Big Reveal!! I can understand Alex being worried - the last time he blacked out like that, he woke up on the floor, held down by four of the elves, with the room's furniture in a shambles and with bruises in a number of places. So it was the singing that had that effect - but the _first_ time Alex heard Daeron sing, he had the normal reaction to it - but that was _before_ he had his little meeting with Námo. I would guess that dying definitely had its effect on him! It will be interesting to see what other effects that experience will have. I guess Alex will decide to keep the secret of the elves - or else there would not have been much of a story. ;-) but it is definitely going to change the dynamics between him and them - and certainly his attitude in class is likely to be different!

Author's reply

Hi Sunny. We will learn a bit more later on why Alex was affected as deeply as he was this time around compared to when he heard Daeron singing before. And you are correct that his near-death experience is a part of it. And if Alex didn't keep the secret, there would indeed be no more story, or not much of it, but the story is far from over and even with Alex on the Elves' side, there is much that has yet to be resolved. And we'll see how is attitude changes as well. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

bookworm · 29 March 2012 · Chapter 21: The Last Picnic of the Season

Well! And now we know about how Ambrose got in and then got out. It must say something truly sad about me that somehow it doesn't surprise me at all. Humans have been looking for immortality for *centuries* and add to that an Elf's natural talents...oh, I imagine he was a prize indeed, poor guy. And Alex! I am increasingly curious as to what is going on with him. On a lighter note, Glorfindel in an apron just makes me LOL~

Author's reply

Hi bookworm. The image of the mighty balrog-slayer in an apron armed with a wooden spoon is hilarious, isn't it? *grin* And Amroth's tale is tragic all around. Obviously Bradford forgot or never learned as a child how perilous it is to piss off a denizen of Fairie, so he only brought his death on himself. As for Alex... we'll learn soon enough what's up with him. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

someone · 28 March 2012 · Chapter 21: The Last Picnic of the Season

For the last three chapters (I'm very tired when writing this, but hopefully it's understandable and doesn't contain too many typos): The trigger word reminded me of an episode of MacGyver, where a couple of people were brainwashed to commit a crime when they heard some words. It's a good thing that Amroth managed to remove that trigger from Alex. The image of Glorfindel in that apron, making spaghetti sauce and calmly letting Alex know that his life will be ruined if he leaves without permission, is very interesting (bizarre, but impressive). And Alex almost followed in Beren's footsteps! Poor thing, he just doesn't understand that dancing elves can be dangerous for bystanders. Amroth's story was quite nasty. How those two managed to be friends, even when the other blackmailed Amroth, I can't understand. But the situation just got even more difficult for Alex, now he knows about the murder of the head of the Agency and that can't be easily ingored. Just one more thing... Now that they are teaching Sindarin in the Academy, what have they done to the Academy's website? It contained a hidden message for Elves in Sindarin, didn't it?

Author's reply

Hi someone. Didn't notice any typos.*grin* The image of Glorfindel is indeed both bizarre and impressive, but I suspect Alex was leaning more towards impressive, myself. LOL! And Amroth's story is rather sordid. Alex will need to deal with it eventually but he's got bigger problems at the moment. As for the Academy website... that will actually come up in discussion soon. Obviously, the students taking the course will be able to read it, but most are 'in the know' anyway or will be so there's no problem there. Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it very much.
