And behold I was right, they're all doomed~ XD Arafinwe is markedly fair, even to the Cook, who really should just be fired on the spot (lying to your employer? REALLY?)
Author's reply
You're right, bookworm. And maybe Arafinwë wants to give Isildil a chance to redeem himself before giving him the boot -- he's all for second chances. And Isildil is probably very good at what he does otherwise I'm sure Arafinwë and Eärwen would've given him the sack long before this. We'll have to see. Thanks for reading and reviewing. · Chapter 6: In Which Lies are Revealed and the Doom of Arafinwë Falls Upon Our Heroes
When I saw the title, all I could think of was "Well...This can't be good." And it wasn't. For the Head Cook that is, as both Glorfindel and Finrod knew, expected and had accepted they'd be recieving some sort of punishment for the Food Fight.
"It was a ploy to steal sweets," the Head Cook said, giving them all a sniff of disdain. "Those other two, that Reborn and his nephew, they came by earlier, pretending they were on a mission from him," he nodded at Finrod, who raised an eyebrow at the ellon’s rudeness at not giving him a proper title.
Which I'm betting did not go unoticed by Arafinwe...
Isildil waved a negligent hand in dismissal. "Whatever else he may be, he’s still a thief and I told him if I ever caught him inside my kitchen again, I would thrash him."
"Your kitchen?" Arafinwë said in feigned surprise. "That’s odd. And all this time I thought it was my kitchen and I was merely lending it to you." His tone was laced with sarcasm and his expression turned sly, a sure sign for those who knew him well that they were treading on dangerous ground with him. Finrod understood this even if Glorfindel or Isildil did not.
Right there, Isildil *should* have realized that he was in as much trouble as "The Boys". ;oD I guess the arrogance has killed the brain cells responisble for being given big hints? The King is right too. It *is* his Kitchen after all and in truth, the only reason Isildil and the rest of the Kitchen Staff have jobs is due to Arafinwe and Earwen's positions and the amount of people that's required to keep a Royal Court running smoothly. If it wasn't for that, I'm sure they'd only need the barest of Staff and would be looking after their own cooking.
Arafinwë sighed and leaned slightly forward, his arms on the desk, his hands clasped before him. "I know for a fact that her Majesty has not approved anything at this time," he said softly, looking pointedly at the cook. "Certainly not about the menu. I believe she merely wished to set up a time for you to meet with her and my son to discuss it, did she not?"
And *that* should really given Isildil a head's up, but...
Arafinwë turned to Isildil still standing there, his expression almost gleeful and he imagined the Head Cook was already plotting how he would make Finrod’s and Glorfindel’s lives miserable during the next two weeks. Well, he was in for a rude awaking....
"As for you, Master Isildil," Arafinwë said, his tone still cold. "I find your actions equally deplorable in one who is in a position of responsibility. I’ve already spoken to the head of your guild and he has accepted my decision." Isildil’s smug expression melted into one of worry. "You will conduct the feast tonight as planned, but as of tomorrow, you will no longer be Head Cook of the royal kitchens."
Pity it took that to finally open up the twit's eyes, but that's the only pity I feel for him. And they opened really wide at that too. :oD
After the two weeks, I and your guild masters will re-examine your case and perhaps, and I stress that, perhaps you will be reinstated as the Royal Head Cook. We’ll just have to see."
Before Isildil could respond, Finrod turned to him, his expression remorseful. "I’m sorry, Master Isildil. I never thought Atar would punish you for something I started."
Isildil merely growled, refusing to acknowledge the prince’s apology. "I have a feast to put on," he said to Arafinwë. "With your Majesty’s permission?"
Arafinwë merely nodded and with a stiff bow, the demoted ellon turned and flung open the door, stalking out of the room and almost, though not quite, slamming the door behind him.
Finrod coming to Isildil's defence should have told that idiot something, but nope!! All he sees is that he's getting punished for something he clearly believes was not his fault. Which it was, as Arafinwe pointed out to everyone. If he'd told Finrod the truth, that food fight would have never happened, but ohhhhh nooo...
Can you tell I *hate* people who, when given even just a very wee bit of power, allow it to go their heads and then in turn, allow arrogance to take over? I also have this funny feeling when those two weeks are up, Isildil won't be getting his title of Head Cook back. Put aside all that happened during that meeting, I'm sure Arafiwne's figuring out that Mr. Inflated Ego Head Cook has also more than likely kept those directly under him from doing anything more in the Royal Kitchen than what that twit "deems" is w/in their skill level. Which when compared to his...
No one learns anything in that kind of an envivornment. Except to be terrified of the "Boss".
I'm thinking the only one who will find their Kitchen Duties truly beneath them out of the group will be Isildil and only Isildil. I hope he's watched awfully closely during these two weeks, because I wouldn't put it past him to try something to get revenge on Finrod and Glorfindel during these next two weeks.
At lesst, I hope so, because I know that Glorfindel and Finrod will be watching their backs and, in turn, Isildil will end up having whatever he comes up w/, blowing up in his face instead.
Can't *wait* for next Wednesday!!!
Author's reply
Hi Tigger. Wow! What a great review. Thanks! And, of course, you're right on the money with regards to Isildil, especially his arrogance and self-importance. We'll be seeing how Isildil fares along with the Boys during the next two weeks of their punishment. The next couple of chapters should prove very interesting. Thanks so much for taking the time to read and review. I really appreciate it.

Great story! As one of your reviewers said, I should go and apologize to my husband for not taking him in consideration when planning our wedding, he was only required to show up in time and wait for me (and like a good bride, I didn't showed up in time!!) I did fight my mom for taking over, but forgot to include my soon- to- be- husband in the planning, now, in my defense, he was not too interested in that, not a Finrod for sure.

I thought it might have been like that, the Head Cook insisting that the menu for the wedding was finalised when in fact he had not even consulted with the Queen. Maybe a few weeks of bashing pots and scrubbing floors will teach him some humility. I wonder how the other kitchen staff will treat him.
I am a little surprised that Finderato was not consulted on the music or his choice of clothing, as he keeps on saying, it is his and Amarie's wedding after all. Now he has to deal with his fathers dismay at his behavior.
I still think he and Amarie should head for the hills and formalize the marriage Sindar style! A lot less fuss and bother! With all the obsticals being thrown in his way, he just might do it!
Huggs,
Lynda
Author's reply
Hi Lynda. Well, you guessed correctly. We'll see how all three fare working in the kitchen.
I think Finrod hasn't been consulted simply because it is just assumed he doesn't want to know the details, that it's the elliths job to prepare the wedding to suit themselves (and I think that is true even today, or it used to be).
And as tempting as it may seem for Finrod to elope with Amarie, he knows that's not going to happen. Too many people have waited too long for this wedding to come about.
Anyway, we'll see how things progress from here. It's not going to be smooth sailing, that's for sure (and if I and my Muse have anything to say about it). *grin* Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

· Chapter 6: In Which Lies are Revealed and the Doom of Arafinwë Falls Upon Our Heroes
At least Finrod admitted his part in starting the Battle of the Kitchen - he probably gained points with Arafinwë for that - but he certainly did not escape punishment. Not that I think Finrod expected it - that sort of behaviour is definitely Not What Is Expected of a Prince, Especially the Haryon to the Noldoran, after all. ;-) As for the punishment; perhaps Arafinwë has managed to get some peeks into his son's famous book?
As for learning embroidery - Glorfindel already knows some, but I think the Queen and her ladies will be happy to help him expand his skills. And while Finrod probably doesn't know anything about _embroidery_, I would think he at least knows which end of the needle to poke through the fabric - during his time in Beleriand he probably went out often to hunt - both orc-hunting and hunting for the pot, and he would hardly have taken a bevy of servants into the field. And hunting would definitely be considered a strenuous activity - a kind that would put a lot of wear and tear on the clothes.
I see that Arafinwë is expecting Ingwion and Sador to be moderating influences. I wonder how long that is going to last? Half an hour? Five minutes? Less? _I_ expect the ellyn to go into plotting mode almost as soon as they get together - and away from observation of their elders. And speaking of Ingwion - is Ingalaure also going to get involved with the conspiracy?
Author's reply
Hi Sunny. I'm sure Arafinwe has his own book of proper punishments, most likely garnered from his time as Manwe's 'thrall'. LOL! Anyway, as for the embroidery, well, we'll just have to wait and see. Both ellyn probably are efficient tailors when need arises but embroidery is another matter entirely.
As for Ingwion and Sador (and any others), joining the Dynamic Duo in their shenanigans... that remains to be seen. You just never know who-all will show up to join in on the fun. *grin*
Thanks for reading and reviewing. I really appreciate it.

Argh, one look at the chapter title and I nearly dreaded reading the update! But then I remembered that Arafinwë is usually fair and going to hear them out and hoped he'd not only punish his son and his friends, but Isildil as well.
Poor Vondo, I feel so bad for him. To remember his death is hard enough, but that he went into the blood trance can't help. At least there are elves around who understand what happened and won't blame him.
Of course Isildil had to start the explanation with his accusations ... no, I can't say I like him. And I loved Finrod's impassioned explanation why it is all wrong to serve Partridge. He's totally right.
HA! So Isildil was lying about the finalized menu? Just to get one over Finrod? When Arafinwë said that they hadn't even talked about it yet, I was speechless for a moment, and then I wanted to dance, because that git didn't get away with it :D
Hm, the punishment für Finrod and Glorfindel is, all in all, just. At first I was a bit worried how nasty Isildil was going to be to them, but it didn't last long. Yay! Totally loved his punishment - the King did a great job with that!
In the end, Finrod proved to be by far the better man (or elf). He apologised, while Isildil didn't have the grace or manners to accept that. Let's see if he learns his lesson or not ...
Author's reply
Hi Kitty. Don't let the chapter titles fool you. Many of them are a bit tongue-in-cheek. *grin* This is essentially a lighthearted story, a needed balm after spending over 2 years writing "In Darkness Bound".
Glad you think the punishment for all of them is just; certainly, Finrod and Glorfindel have no problem with their punishment. Isildil, of course, is another matter. Whether he learns his lesson or not remains to be seen.

Well Done Arafinwe, well done indeed. Right about now he's probably trying to figure out which job is harder, being a papa or being King. LOl.
I'm glad Isildil got a bit of comeuppance and it was nice seeing Glorfindel and finrod showing a bit of remorse for getting him in trouble.
Oh, do me a favor and tell Glorfindel that you never, ever confess that the punishment will not be so bad.

· Chapter 5: In Which Finrod Visits the Royal Kitchens and an Epic Battle Ensues
Really, I just can't believe what an arrogant git Isildil is! To call the Prince "troublemaker and thief" to his face is more than rude. And his insistence on a menu despite some of the most important guests not liking it is unbelievable. When I have guests, I usually inquire beforehand if there's something they don't like or can't eat, that saves both of us a lot of trouble. And this is a *Royal Wedding*! How can Isildil think he can disregard the dislikes of the bride and of the father of the bridegroom?? And he thinks he can get away with it because he's irreplacable, right? Any normal employee with such a behaviour would be sacked. I'm really curious how that's going to turn out ... it would be about time to take him down a peg or two.
And while Finrod and his friends probably shouldn't have started a food fight, I can't even really blame them. To be honest, I'd have loved to stuff the peelings down Isildil's throat, not just throw them into his face.
Ouch. That was a very bad turn. Poor Vondo. Though I can see how the picture he was seeing caused this - someone he loved in red liquid, there blood can probably look very like red wine. Um ... am I a very bad girl when I say that, if it had to happen at all, he couldn't have attacked a more deserving ellon?
The last line left me laughing, even if I'm not sure which battle Vondo was talking about.
I look forward to the fallout of this.
Author's reply
Hi Kitty. Well, you know chefs and their art. They think they are Eru's gift to the rest of us. We'll be seeing just how Arafinwë handles him as well as our Dynamic Duo. *grin*

· Chapter 4: In Which Information is Gathered and Further Plans are Made
Cucualinde certainly has her head screwed on right, in that she does not start head-butting with Finrod. And I wonder if her not being impressed with Lady Almáriel's seamstress might have just a _teeeny_ little bit to do with the colors Lady Almáriel (or her seamstress) came up with? Rose and yellow-green! Those are perfectly nice colors (in small amounts, at least) but together? They would be a guarantee that the ever-inventive Noldor would invent sunglasses (and make them suddenly fashionable at the wedding, too, no doubt!)
And anyway, Finrod's friend Morwen would no doubt want nothing to do with such a combination of colors. He did after all promise Morwen that she would do his wedding clothes, and we all know what Finrod is like where oaths (and presumably also promises) are concerned!
Terendulë is definitely a smart cookie! Getting the responsibility for the decorations for the royal wedding, and _not telling anybody about it_! And her reasoning is certainly sound, and Glorfindel shows that he understands it, with his little story about one catfight about one detail at Idril's wedding! And the low-key approach to the consultation the gardener suggested made it clear the two of them understood one another. :-D
And a good thing that Terendulë insisted that she had not made ani decisions yet because she wanted input from _Lady Amarië_ (and specificially _not_ her mother!)
Author's reply
Hi Sunny. Well at least Cucualindë's not hostile. As to what she thinks about it all, is anyone's guess. I like the idea of the Noldor inventing sunglasses out of self-preservation. And these are the people who can look into the heart of the sun without blinking or damaging their retinae. LOL!
Terendulë is very smart and knows her own mind. She's not afraid of anyone, nor is she easily impressed. She will be a good ally to Finrod in the weeks to come and her husband is cut from the same cloth.

About Bookworm's comment - I wonder just who is all screwed? The Fab Four will no doubt get their scoldings (which are merited, after all) but that cook really also ought to find himself in hot water! Planning the wedding dinner with at least two dishes that members of the the wedding party or the immediate family detest - I can hardly believe Eärwen would have accepted that - as the head cook claims she did!
Author's reply

RL has been coming at me with full-speed lately and I haven't had a chance to catch up. But I'm trying to now, between laughing too hard at this lovely chapter. The Sindarin was priceless -
Ai! Arnad nín as sûl: ‘Oh! My kingdom for a goblet!’
Ú-ârig arnad: ‘You don’t have a kingdom’.
I'm totally in love with these two lines. A perfect response to the wine cask spilling out onto the floor. I suspect that two things will happen as a result of this. Dinner will be late - perhaps vastly changed from the original menu and probably not quite made to satisfaction. Additionally, Finrod's insistence at planning the wedding dinner will suddenly have Royal backing and may actually be listened to by the stubborn Head of the kitchen. As with most master chefs, he will have a serious temper, but I think that Finrod and Glorfindel are more than equal to the task.
You've started my day out wonderfully, mellon nin.

Hi Erulisse. Well, I'm glad you were able to catch up. That's the nice thing about this story being posted only once a week -- it gives people time to read a chapter when they can. Definitely a terrible moment to remember just at that juncture. I suspect that the cook will have a terrible complaint to lodge, and justly so; but Arafinwe has reason at the moment to ignore him and to stand by his son and the others. He was not being particularly helful, and the very fact he is choosing to ignore the likes and dislikes of the bride is not a good omen regarding his future, I suspect.

· Chapter 5: In Which Finrod Visits the Royal Kitchens and an Epic Battle Ensues
That cook had better shape up, or Finrod is guaranteed to introduce the concept of catering to Tirion, just to ensure that the wedding feast has a menu he considers acceptable. Who was behind that menu anyway? Lady Almáriel?
Such an incredibly funny fight - it reminds me a bit about a fight in the very first chapter of one of my favorite books - that fight is almost as, ahem, interesting as this one (and food is demolished there as well) before the heronine dispatches her opponent - a rather seedy-looking vampire (almost a contradiction in terms) _to whom she has not been properly introduced_ - with her hairstick! :-p
But to get back to this fight - to top it off, Vondo gets into the blood-trance! Not that any of the kitchen workers understand what that means. So they are undoubtedly shocked when the King walks in, and instead of restoring what they would consider to be proper order, actually aids and abets the miscreants who started the fight in the first place!
Hmmm. Perhaps Isildil is going to give notice, and flounce off in a huff! At least one can hope... ;-)
Author's reply
Hi Sunny. Catering in Tirion.... now there's a novel idea. *LOL!* I'm glad you found the fight incredibly funny. I had a lot of fun writing it.
