They seem to know they will never see them again, is Rawe leaving with them though? Lynda

Author's reply

No, he stayed in the Falas. I guess he would not leave his brother, who in turn would not leave the sea. In my universe, the both of them were Unbegotten, linked in kinship by how I imagine the Ainur are, back then in the Timeless Halls. But it would make it stronger than the blood ties even, I would think... And yes, the little family of Ráwë's daughter went forth intending not to come back. I imagine they had persuaded Ráwë to go with them instead, but he would not do so and leave his brother. Nobody goes forth lightly out of Gondolin... Thank you for the review. It was rather thought-provoking. I hope my reply to it did not bore you to pieces. :) Rey

Rick · 26 July 2011 · Chapter 22: A Race

This is a very interesting series - slightly different points of view, that are fun to adjust to. Thanks for writing them. One minor nit-picky note for chapter 22/A Race: "ore" is the stuff dwarves delve out of mines to refine into metals - eg gold ore. "Oar" is the object used for propelling small boats by hand, unless it's a canoe, in which case paddle is the noun. English can be so strange. I do mean this kindly, truly. This is a good vignette - quite powerful.

Author's reply

Thank you very, very much for the review -- and especially for the correction! :embarrassed: Homophones is a pain for screen-reader users; and it had been long since last I used either spellings anyway. I feel really, really embarrassed about this. Thank you for catching it and telling me; worth so much. I'm sorry if you might find it tideous or challenging to adjust to all the different scenes and characters and tenses... I tried doing that from a character's point of view but found myself unable to do so. Regardless, I'm glad you still found some fun in it. -- And thank you so for the compliments. :) Rey

6336 · 26 July 2011 · Chapter 24: Filling in the Gaps

Nothing like a pesky little brother to spoil things for you, they are adorable when asleep in bed though! Lynda

Author's reply

Haha. I was pleasantly surprised. I never expected a response, and not this quick. Thank you so! And yes, I agree, little brothers are pesky little things, adoreable when they are actually not annoying us... Heheheh. I was actually inspired by my little brother when we were small, and also by my own behaviour at that age. :) I'm glad you enjoyed this little vignette! Thank you for taking time and effort to tell me what you think, too. :) Rey

Larner · 25 June 2011 · Chapter 19: A Lion and a Mouse

Well, in this case the mouse managed to best him didn't she? And there's no question that he most definitely deserved what he got! Yay!

Author's reply

Haha. Yes. And I'm glad this piece worked out. It wasn't easy to write. I didn't know what would fit the prompt (the title of the piece) within the frame of The Silmarillion, but then I thought of Luthien dancing before Melkor's throne... It's like a twisted rendition of the children's tale from which I borrow the prompt; but what's about Melkor -- even in slight relation -- that isn't twisted? :rueful: I'm glad you enjoyed it though! Rey

Larner · 25 June 2011 · Chapter 18: Count Up

Intent on allowing Hurin's steadiness work to his disadvantage, eh? Hmm! Interesting!

Author's reply

Glad you enjoyed it! I spent weeks angsting about what to write for this prompt, and days to get the ficlet done... I hoped to provide at least a small light snippet about the brothers, before they were embroiled in the war of the Elves. Here they wer just being brothers, with all the brotherly competition entailed. I was firstly inspired by a snippet in Silm about the brothers, of which I quoted in the notes to the story. It is as fluffy as it got in the standard of Silm! I'm surprised no other fluff-seeker rendered it into more than words in a book of gloomy events, though. (Or perhapsI just missed. In that case, would you please refer me to such a tale?) Rey

Larner · 25 June 2011 · Chapter 17: Celebration

I can certainly appreciate why she feels isolated from the adults in this situation. Well done.

Author's reply

Children have different concerns than adults, I suppose. At least I tried to convey it here. Glad you enjoyed the little snippet. It wasn't much, but well... I'm glad someone else appreciated it, even if I couldn't do that much. :) Rey

Larner · 25 June 2011 · Chapter 16: Count Down

Excellently done, and the title is a perfect choice for it.

Author's reply

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. If I somehow forgot to mention it in the notes to the story: This is also a gift for you, so I dearly hoped you would enjoy it... Rey

Larner · 25 June 2011 · Chapter 15: Retaliation

And so he has lost so much of the integrity he once knew, and seeks vengeance for mere slights, real or imagined. How this once mighty Elf has fallen.

Author's reply

"Orc in Elven guise," or so Philosopher at Large put it in her dramatic rendition of the Lay of Leithian... I kept it in mind when I was writing this. Glad it worked, and glad you caught the gist. Rey

Larner · 25 June 2011 · Chapter 14: What Happens Now?

An excellent ficlet! Oh, how difficult it must have been for her, losing her anchor to the life she'd chosen and the fana she'd borne while living it. Husband and daughter gone, land invaded and home destroyed--no wonder she found herself drawn back westward once more.

Author's reply

... Quite an apt summary. :startled: But yes, you were right. I reiterate, I'm glad I managed to convey what it might be like to her, and in the process gained understanding of her plight for myself. Thank you muchly for the comments! (Doubled, but I appreciate both. :)) Rey

Fiondil · 20 June 2011 · Chapter 16: Count Down

A lovely look at a pivotal moment in the history of Arda. Thank you for this. I really enjoyed it.

Author's reply

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. And still, sorry for the long, long delay... - Rey

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 19 June 2011 · Chapter 16: Count Down

I love this!!! The imagery is poetic and I can just see it happening...The Maiar faring forth to war. What exactly happened to Lunwe, or do I not want to know? So very well done, Eärillë. Thank you so, so much. =) Kaylee Arafinwiel

Author's reply

Hi, Kaylee! And thank you for the lovely review... About Lúnwë: He appears in "Like Toy Soldiers" and "My Heart Lies Where My Eyes Alight" in more detail. I have never been able to bring myself to write about the actual time of his torture and subsequent maiming, however. (I am not that fond of dark fics, unfortunately. :rueful:) And... you're welcome? I'm sorry the story-gift wasn't more personal, and it was way out of the season of gift-giving. - Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 15: Retaliation

Such pride does not become him, I fear, and in the end proved vain indeed. Well done series.

Author's reply

Indeed. And in the very end, he was killed (most possibly) by one of the so-called "Moriquendi"... -- And thank you for your chapter-by-chapter commentory! I feel quite flattered that you would dedicate some time to do so. And such interesting remarks... :) Thank you for them all. I highly appreciate it. - Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 14: What Happens Now?

Unfortunately, I can see this all too well! Alas for her grief, having lost both daughter and husband so!

Author's reply

Glad I managed to convey that... I didn't quite understand why she would leave Doriath in a wreck like that before I write this, truth be told. But now I do. Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 13: Rebellion

If only they had indeed rebelled so--perhaps they would not each have died so ignomiously!

Author's reply

Indeed, but true tales don't always have a happy ending -- sadly. -- And I'm... relieved, that it didn't sound too dramatic to you. Someone I asked to beta-read this piece said the ending was too dramatic. Well, if you are rethinking it again, I would be quite glad to receive a second opinion on this. (My own opinion doesn't count, since I'm the author. :)) Thanks for the comments nonetheless! And you, again, managed to incite some plot-bunnies into my head unwittingly... Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 12: Betrayal

His perceived blessing in reality a curse he has called upon himself, I fear. And Morgoth proves the liar he was.

Author's reply

Ha... Well aimed! I couldn't say it better, myself. And sorry that I forgot to reply to this. Not that I didn't appreciate the time and effort you put into reviewing my works! (Far from it...) Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 11: Breaking the Habit

I can imagine that in time the times of resting would be viewed with distaste and even some fear. Alas for them all.

Author's reply

... And perhaps that is why there is no song about the Grinding Ice, even a lament for those who perished there. I tried to imagine how it might be like, and this pale rendition was the result. Not good, but that's the best I could do. Perhaps later... Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 10: Earth

Definitely she is a child of Mahal more than a follower of Vaire.

Author's reply

Yup. And again, well aimed! I hoped to convey that. Glad you caught the gist. (Then, I might not be as dissatisfied of this -- the outcome of my musing -- as before...) I'm bad with Dwarven customs. :) Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 9: Tradition

Poor Thranduil--what a rite of passage to be forced to endure! Heh!

Author's reply

Heheheh. At least he made it out, in the end, if barely. :) I pity him also; but I couldn't help from giggling madly when I wrote this, and again when I read it. Perhaps I'm just evil... Glad you enjoyed this little tale. I enjoyed reading your commentry on Thranduil's fate just as much. :) Thanks! Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 8: Hobby

Twins can be twice the trouble, it appears! Heh!

Author's reply

Indeed! Poor Maedhros. Hahaha. Got the inspiration for this from the Harry Potter series, from the Weasley twins. :) I was giggling like a loon when I wrote that. I'm glad you enjoyed it similarly. Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 7: Wind

There is indeed reason to be concerned and on guard, as the young Peredhil have reason to know. Too bad they can't fly their kites in defiance of the dark, however.

Author's reply

A pity, indeed. But I suppose Erestor realised that, being only half-Elven, they would not have the fortitude to brace against such a foul weather, despite their courage. And yes, quite a reason to recognise the dangers and be on guard about it... It was a dark time, and being children sadly wouldn't excuse them from possible harm. I enjoyed reading your comments. Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to drop by and write me. Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 6: Water

Even for these newly awakened Elves there are some thoughts that appear far too novel, apparently! Heh! Glad Ulmo is speaking with Nowe, though.

Author's reply

Well, there are limits to everything, and perhaps our certain chiftain here just has crossed one too many. Haha. I firstly thought of a different story when I came across this theme. But then I thought of Círdan and how he is characterised in my universe, and said to myself, "Why not?" I'm glad you enjoyed it similarly...

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 5: Threats

A good time to beat a hasting retreat, even if the object of their quarrel had been stunned and was reduced to crawling for the moment. At least these two get the appropriate reward for their stupidity--nothing!

Author's reply

Well, yes, perhaps that certain Elf realised that fighting on in his condition and ending up providing a dainty snack for the orcs wouldn't be a good idea even to save his pride from bidding a hasty retreat... Glad the orcs came across at least marginally well. It was a pain to write them, because I had never tried it and because of their revulsing mind-frame... (Yikes!) Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 4: Plants

One way to get the child to recognize there may indeed be a purpose to studying botany and herbology!

Author's reply

I decided to try to apply one of the teaching methods I myself learnt in Silm-verse, and here is the result... Heheh. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 3: Transportation

A wonderful interaction between Beren's lady and Huan. Heh!

Author's reply

Rather heavily influenced by Philosopher at Large's "Leithian Dramatic Script," I fear. But I'm glad you enjoyed it, still. And yes, Luthien can be a fearsome force to both the Enemy and her own sad... (I'm glad I don't have to worry about crossing her! :)) Rey

Larner · 31 January 2011 · Chapter 2: Pet

I well remember my own first encounter with a squirrel at the age of three or four, and how nastily my hand was torn by the animal's nails. This rings very true, between the reaction of the squirrel and the squabbling of the children!

Author's reply

Haha. I never thought anyone would say that. I have never personally 'met with' a squirrel, so it was totally a scrambling-in-the-dark idea. I am glad (and very, very relieved) that it worked in the end! I could not think of anything else when I encountered this theme, and no other minor characters too, so I just soldiered on. - Rey
