Fiondil · 10 March 2014 · Chapter 38: A Nice Evening for a Walk (if you don't mind being soaked)

Oho! Inglor's back. *does happy dance* I don't know if he's truly as dense as he seems to be at times or smarter than everyone in Valinor put together, including the Valar. So, will they REALLY go searching for Idril and Tuor? LOL! I suspect this will be a trip to remember for them both and it will be interesting to see if either of them survives.

Author's reply

Hello Fiondil I don't know if he's truly as dense as he seems to be at times or smarter than everyone in Valinor put together, including the Valar. That is a REALLY good question. Is he completely oblivious or is he really, really intelligent and extraordinarily good at hiding it? Why does he feel the need to hide it? Will they actually go looking for Idril and Tuor? I guess. Unless Haleth can convince his to sail to what remains of Numenor. Which would mean Haleth would have to tell him what she was actually thinking. Given her track record of non-communication, it would be surprising if she confided in him now. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

curiouswombat · 10 March 2014 · Chapter 38: A Nice Evening for a Walk (if you don't mind being soaked)

I am almost as pleased to see Inglor as Haleth is - or possibly even more so!

Author's reply

Hello curiouswombat It's a relief to have Inglor back. His (almost) unflappable calm is the perfect foil for Haleth's over-reactions. She's not nearly so entertaining without him. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

Twoflower2 · 10 March 2014 · Chapter 38: A Nice Evening for a Walk (if you don't mind being soaked)

It is a treat to see so much from you in the course of a single day! A very enjoyable chapter. Ecthelion watching Haleth with grave concern cracked me up. He really doesn't have a clue. Had Inglor been hiding all this time in Elrond's gardens just outside of Haleth's eyesight, waiting to step in when she tries to bolt? On the eye-gazing - I assume Inglor tries to see in Haleth's eyes if she is his only one, or something like that. Probably this doesn't work with mortals, so he is confused. As Haleth hasn't had the benefit of reading LACE, she is confused as well. Good luck to Haleth with searching for Idril and Tuor - there is a job for a Finder in the Blessed Realm after all.

Author's reply

Hello Twoflower Outside circumstances inspired me to write. You've made me realize that Ecthelion's relationship with Haleth is confused. On one hand he wants to protect her the way he tried to protect Aredhel which is very much the traditional man protecting the woman idea. On the other hand, he often treats Haleth as though she's a direct substitute for Tuor. Thank-you! Eye-gazing...yes. Thank-you for the insights and the review. Haleth

endorearwen · 10 March 2014 · Chapter 38: A Nice Evening for a Walk (if you don't mind being soaked)

You have absolutely made my day, Haleth!! I can't imagine anything that would start my week off as beautifully as reading this chapter before my long work day begins! :-) So... Inglor is back! *sigh of contentment amid rosy cheeks!* I didn't expect him to resurface so quickly but oh am I ever happy that he did! I don't think Haleth (or I) could have gone much longer worrying about his whereabouts... As always, I laughed so hard at some of the wit in this chapter that I'm sure my co-workers think I'm nuts! I do hope that Haleth and Inglor have permanently lost Ecthelion and Glorfindel as they set out on this mystifying search! I LOVED Haleth's physical response to Inglor's question about how she enjoyed having those two for body guards! Classic Haleth!! I'm not sure that Elrond will be particularly happy with her sudden departure, but then again he probably knew she'd bolt... Can't wait to see what happens next - difficult to imagine that Haleth would succumb to the 'sleep' of the Enchanted Isles... ;-) But, if anyone can find Idril and Tuor, it's Haleth! Favourite scene - Haleth begrudgingly leaving behind the candlestick she planned on stealing! Favourite line of dialogue - Inglor's response when Haleth asks why he wants to hold her hand: ‘Because it is a lovely night and I am most happy to see you again.’ Bring on chapter 39! :-)

Author's reply

Hello, Endorarwen I'm glad that I could make the start of your work week a little easier. Inglor is back and seemingly as clueless as ever. He didn't seem to like the idea of the bodyguards catching up with her. Maybe he's not as clueless as believed. For anyone with profound insomnia, the Enchanted Isles would sound like a paradise. I can just see some enterprising entrepreneur setting up a small but comfortable hotel for very rich clients who just can't sleep. Thank-you for taking the time to review. Haleth.

galathil · 10 March 2014 · Chapter 38: A Nice Evening for a Walk (if you don't mind being soaked)

Hi Haleth. Wow Inglor showed up at the precise moment when he is needed. Inglor seems to have a knack of doing this. Lets hope this time that neither of them, say anything that will drive each other away. It would be interesting if they do find Idril& Tuor. This way with Haleth maping the islands and kept busy she can't get board and in trouble. We all know that she lied to Inglor at first as she was heading back to Arda. I think she might be talking her self into it. As for our two other elves, well I guess we have to see.I hope Elrond isn't to hurt with Haleth. Really can't wait for the next chapter. LOL Trish (Galathil)

Author's reply

Hello, galathil Inglor really does have a talent for showing up at the right place at the right time, doesn't he? Haleth really isn't very good at coming up with fake excuses. She's definitely not con-man material. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

Tari · 7 March 2014 · Chapter 37: A Brief Conversation

Haleth is up to something, of that I am sure. Glad to see you writing again. I missed this story.

Author's reply

Hello, Tari You know Haleth well. She's probably up to something. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

Twoflower2 · 2 March 2014 · Chapter 37: A Brief Conversation

Thank you for the quick update. Some protection :) Are they trying to drive her to extremes on purpose? I can't believe anyone, elf or not, would be so clueless about anyone's psychology, mortal or not. This would have been a very funny chapter, if not for those dark hints about terrible secrets in Haleth's past.

Author's reply

Hello, Twoflower2 I'm going to do my level best to bring the average interval between posts to less than six months. It's hard to imagine what Haleth would need protection from in her current circumstances (except herself). And when there's nothing concrete to act on, people tend to make stuff up. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

endorearwen · 2 March 2014 · Chapter 37: A Brief Conversation

Wonderful chapter, Haleth! Loved seeing the fierceness of our dear Haleth resurfacing! I think Elrond was lucky that she held her anger so greatly in check - though, I do think it was wise that the 'body guards' disarmed her! I'm so glad things aren't further complicated for poor Haleth by constantly having Inglor on her mind! ;-) Why do I have the feeling that Haleth is actually Inglor's sister who has been re-born as a mortal by mistake?! So intrigued to see what's going to happen at Lorien! My favourite line: ‘No. These dark circles under my eyes are the latest fashion rage in Tirion. Do you like them? Mine are the biggest and darkest,’ she thought. LOL at that one! That's exactly what I would have thought after being asked such a ridiculous question (especially by someone who is all too aware of the entire situation...) Well done! Can't wait to read Chapter 38! :-)

Author's reply

Hello, endorarwen I agree. Taking away Haleth's weapons was the smartest thing the two of them did. Reborn as a mortal by mistake. That's an interesting concept. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

curiouswombat · 2 March 2014 · Chapter 37: A Brief Conversation

Oh my goodness - poor Haleth! They would drive me batty, too!

Author's reply

No one likes being treated as though they are helpless. The wisest thing they did was to take her weapons away. And the feeling of being under constant surveillance...ugh. I don't think they meant any harm. The situation just got out of control. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

Fiondil · 2 March 2014 · Chapter 37: A Brief Conversation

I was pleasantly surprised to see a new chapter from you so soon. Poor Haleth. It's a good thing they took her knives away, because those two ellyn would've ended up having tea with Námo otherwise. Loved the way she ranted about Elrond's study. Poor Elrond. I don't think he has a degree in psychiatry. He probably felt a bit out of his depth here. I hope Haleth does go to Lórien. She needs the healing, though I suspect if she were to go, Lórien would never be the same again. *grin* Glad to see the story continuing, Haleth. Looking forward to the next chapter and hope it's soon.

Author's reply

Hello, Fiondil "...because those two ellyn would've ended up having tea with Námo otherwise..." You really have a way with words! Now I have a mental image of the three of them having tea, being distracted for a few minutes, coming back to the table and discovering all of the silver teaspoons gone. It's true that Haleth needs healing but she's also remarkably resistant to it. It's like her pain is an integral part of her identity. Sending Haleth to Lorien would be like sending an over-energetic teenager to a convent where the nuns were all over 60 and had taken a vow of silence. It would be a disaster! Thank-you for the review. Haleth

Twoflower2 · 28 February 2014 · Chapter 36: Complications

Thank you for the update, Haleth. It is such a treat to see more of this story. For me, the long hiatus between the updates parallels the state of suspended animation Haleth found hearself in at Elrond's house and so creates a special literary effect :) Just for how long has she stayed at Elrond's? We know it's not centuries only because the ringbearers are still alive. And as for the protection thing... if Ecthelion tried to protect Aredhel following her anywhere she went, no wonder she ran away eventually. Has it ever occurred to Ecthelion during all thoose millennia of contemplation? BTW, about Haleth's strange memories that seem to span millennia: I was extremely surprised to read about (seemingly) Haleth-like cases right there in the canon.

Author's reply

Hello Twoflower2 To be fair, Beleriand in the Elder Days wasn't the safest of places. It would have made sense for people to travel in groups; preferably large groups for mutual protection. Aredhel's decision to wander away wasn't the wisest and she paid dearly for it. Then again, Tol Eressea is hardly crawling with orcs, giant spiders and balrogs. Ecthelion and Glorfindel may just be bored. Or they might see a person who is incredibly careless with her own well being, especially because Haleth is (or was) a mortal woman. By definition she's smaller, weaker, slower and less skilled than the Elves. Throw in the fact that she's a distant descendant of Tuor and Idril as well as the perception that protecting her can mean redemption for Ecthelion and Glorfindel; I can see their point. It all depends on what they'll do to protect her. Keeping her out of trees would be a good start. There are millennia spanning memories in the canon? Could you please contact me privately? I'm really interested. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

Silmarien · 26 February 2014 · Chapter 36: Complications

She is channeling Aredhel, isn't she? That's why she sees people and place she shouldn't, and why Angrod knew her.

Author's reply

I wish I'd thought of that! It would explain a great deal. Except, if she's channeling Aredhel she'd still look like Haleth. Unless Elves see people differently that mortals do. Then again, thinking back to Gandalf's explanation to Frodo of Glorfindel appearing as a bright light, maybe they DO see differently. Thank-you for the idea and the review. Haleth

Tari · 26 February 2014 · Chapter 36: Complications

To be under the protection of those two would be wonderful. I wish she'd get over her anger and self recrimination and just enjoy all that is around her.

Author's reply

Hello Tari Most people would rest easier knowing they were protected by people like Ecthelion and Glorfindel. But Haleth isn't most people. She really doesn't like being told what she can and can't do. Apart from falling out of trees, what trouble can she get into? Thank-you for the review. Haleth

Fiondil · 24 February 2014 · Chapter 36: Complications

Well, with both Ecthelion and Glorfindel looking after Haleth, I don't think life will be too dull for her. LOL! Hope to see Inglor soon. That ellon takes sulking to a whole new level, silly boy.

Author's reply

Hello Fiondil You're probably right about Haleth's life not being dull. Inglor, being Inglor, will wait until Haleth doesn't want to see him at all. Then he'll turn up. Just because. It's a talent. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

Freyalyn · 24 February 2014 · Chapter 36: Complications

Now if she just stops overreacting to things, sits down in a quiet room with Celebrian, and asks her to just explain EVERYTHING. And then does the same with Glorfindel. She's assuming too much and never asking the right questions (or indeed any questions at all) Somehow, I think she won't... So glad we're back up and running with this one. Thank you.

Author's reply

Hello Frealyn I'm not sure that explaining everything to Haleth would make the situation any better. She'd over-react, but at least the over-reaction would be to something real instead of something she imagined. Thank-you reviewing. Haleth

galathil · 24 February 2014 · Chapter 36: Complications

Thank you! Thank you! I was very excited to see the next chapter. Of course read it and enjoyed it. Haleth every thing I wanted to say, the other reviews have said it. Nice to see that she finally came down, from the tree. Really can't wait for the next chapter.Lots of love Galathil

Author's reply

Hello Galathil. Something tells me that Haleth won't be climbing many trees any time soon. It won't take me as long to post the next chapter. There's just a small bit of work to do. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

endorearwen · 24 February 2014 · Chapter 36: Complications

What a tremendous joy it is to be back in Haleth's company again!! Gosh, I've missed her! :-) It's been a long wait, but well worth the cost! Poor Haleth... My heart was disappointed too that the blond haired, fair faced, second voice didn't belong to the long lost Inglor - apparently neither of us will get what we want for a while yet... I loved the lessons in Elf history that you've woven into the conversation between Haleth and Ecthelion, another great example reminding us of the timeless Ages through which the elves live. I also like the friendship that you are building between the two characters. As always, I laughed out loud at the humour you've woven into the lines! ;-) In my excitement, I read the chapter at lightening speed, but I believe there was one sentence missing a word (..."Master Elrond can care of himself...") and one sentence in the first paragraph that I couldn't quite sort out (..."She welcomed by dull ache in her backside...") If I notice anything more when I re-read it at a more leisurely pace, I'll let you know. So HAPPY to see this story continue and I am looking forward with eager anticipation to reading Chapter 37! :-)

Author's reply

Hello Endoearwen. I don't know if it's safe for Inglor to come back. A grumpy Haleth is a dangerous Haleth. Tolkien's world is so large and complex and there are so many things in its history to mention. I can remember being a kid and feeling completely out of touch when my parents talked about things that had happened twenty years before I was born. My history was their living memory. It really makes a difference in my understanding of the events. I call on that memory when describing Haleth's interactions with the Elves. Thank-you for finding the typos. I've corrected the sentence mentioning Elrond and tried to reword the other sentence. I'm not sure if it worked. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

curiouswombat · 24 February 2014 · Chapter 36: Complications

Oh poor Haleth - she is going to be protected beyond all bearing by the sound of it. Perhaps she can send Glorfindel off on a quest to find Inglor!

Author's reply

That's a really good idea. I wish I'd thought of it. Thanks for the review, curiouswombat. Haleth

Freyalyn · 27 August 2013 · Chapter 35: A (Mostly) Pleasant Evening

Oh dear, has this died a death and gone into abeyance? Poor Haleth...

Author's reply

Not quite. I'd written myself into a very tight corner and couldn't figure a way out for a long, long time. Not that Haleth's lot in life has gotten any easier.

Freyalyn · 19 August 2013 · Chapter 35: A (Mostly) Pleasant Evening

come on, we need an update now. Poor Haleth is utterly lost here, and needs some sort of a hand out from the hole she's fallen into.

Author's reply

Hello Freyalyn. Well, it's not a hole so much as a tree. The writers block has finally lifted and the story has been updated. At last. I'm sorry for leaving it for so long. Haleth

endorearwen · 13 July 2013 · Chapter 35: A (Mostly) Pleasant Evening

Greetings, Haleth! I LOVE this story! It's not often that I read a whole book in one sitting, but I simply couldn't put this one down! I'm totally captivated by the main characters, Haleth and Inglor. I was up into the wee hours reading and didn't realize the story wasn't finished yet. Now I'm hanging in a state of anticipation - where is Inglor and is he OK? Has Haleth finally learned her lesson? I can't wait to read the coming chapters!! There's so much more I'd like to say but I don't want to write my own novel as a review! Any chance we could talk 'off-line' by email? Thank you for sharing this story with me!

Author's reply

Hello Endorearwen. Thank-you for your review. Where is Inglor? Haleth would really like to know. As far as Haleth learning any lessons...it takes multiple mistakes, but occasionally the lessons do sink in. Until she gets angry, then she forgets. Haleth

egallis · 23 June 2013 · Chapter 35: A (Mostly) Pleasant Evening

Yes, I do have a deviantart account, though I do not use it. Same name. :) Looking forward to the next chapter.

Andreth · 31 May 2013 · Chapter 35: A (Mostly) Pleasant Evening

I love your story! I've started to read it this morning and couldn't stop untill there weren't any chapters left. I like the relationship between Haleth and Inglor but come'n why Haleth had to be so cruel to him in the last chapter and why Inglor can't tell her what he really feels? That's harsh. ;D On the other hand I like involving Ecthelion in this whole thing and you should be kind to him cos he's one of my favourite characters. I was wondering about the connection between Haleth(Silmariën) and the other Haleth(from Tolkien works). Are they the same persons? Cos there was that scene in the library of Elrond and during dinner and I quite didn't comprehend it. I'm eager to read the next chapter. Greetings from your faithful fan from Slovakia :)

Author's reply

Thank-you, Andreth. I'll be good to Ecthelion. I had to go back and read the bit in Elrond's library. The librarian finds the book open. He assumes Haleth was reading it, but he doesn't know for certain. The stories of the Exiles may not be that common in Aman. If someone wanted to look up what had happened in Middle-earth in the First Age, Elrond's library would likely be the best place to go. (That or Cirdan, who would remember a lot of it.) Someone was looking in the book. We don't really know who. I hope the story continues to entertain you. Thank-you for the review. Haleth

twoflowerr22 · 8 May 2013 · Chapter 35: A (Mostly) Pleasant Evening

Thank you for another great chapter. The dance of butterflies was lovely. A figure of flame? Caranthir? Or perhaps Maedhros... More and more mysteries. Looking forward to how this resolves.

Author's reply

Thank-you, twoflower. A person shaped from flames. When I'm really discouraged I think about having him appear and burn down everything by accident. The end. I hadn't thought of him being Maedhros. Hmmm. Thanks again. Haleth

Freyalyn · 6 May 2013 · Chapter 35: A (Mostly) Pleasant Evening

Poor Haleth - I'm beginning to think she needs to seek out some serious therapy. At least she's in the right place, if she can ever pull her head far enough out for look beyond herself. I really do feel for the situation she is now in, through no (real) fault of her own, but continuing to look inwards will really not achieve anything. I do look forward to more soon

Author's reply

Hello Freyalyn You're got it exactly right. Haleth needs to stop feeling sorry for herself. Even she is beginning to realize this. The problem that's making everything worse is that she lacks a purpose. She needs something worthwhile to do. She's like a high-powered executive who has been forced into early, unwanted retirement. I'll do my best to get the next installment ready relatively soon. Thank-you for the review. Haleth
