Larner · 12 July 2009 · Chapter 13: Unlight Arising

Ah--Ungoliant--the spirit I find I enjoy seeing find her own end!

Author's reply

Yeah, me too. I think she was the creepiest creature of the old mythology, in all of its versions counted together.

Larner · 11 July 2009 · Chapter 12: The Beginning of a Long Tale

Love the look at the many discarded characters and a few discarded concepts as well. And it's interesting to see the theft of the Silmarilli from the point of view of those Noldo who survived to return to the Undying Lands, even if they never go beyond Tol Eressea.

Author's reply

I do love these older tales. I find I can connect to the older characters a lot better than to the pompous ones we meet in the Silmarillion later. *ducks from flying rotten tomatoes*

Dís Thráinsdotter · 11 July 2009 · Chapter 13: Unlight Arising

Ungoliant sounds horrible indeed, a great spider who wants to devour all light and make darkness of it. Small wonder Melkor used her as a weapon. I still don´t think there was much of an alliance between them, they just used each other for a time. It looks to me as if Meril is pained by the memory of the Silmarills, and I wonder what her opinion on Feanor might be.

Author's reply

You're absolutely right about Melkor and Ungoliant. And no, Meril doesn't have any fond memories of Fëanor at all!

Larner · 10 July 2009 · Chapter 11: A Silver Spirit

Ah, yes, Tinfang Warble--a most strange character. I am glad to realize he was originally Luthien's brother! Most interesting.

Author's reply

You know, sometimes I'm really happy that certain older names got discarded. Imagine a poor character called like that! *g*

Larner · 10 July 2009 · Chapter 10: The Songs That Are Sung

Very thoughtful, and typical that that she feels the need to bathe frequently. Now, to learn what Meril did during the Kinslaying.

Author's reply

Yes, I thought that would be typical, after what she's gone through - in either interpretation. Meril's past will remain hidden for a while yet, but will be revealed eventually.

Dís Thráinsdotter · 10 July 2009 · Chapter 12: The Beginning of a Long Tale

When I think about Melkor I get the image of an envious child, if s/he wants something all ways, no matter how hideous, are tried. I also have the feeling that the others, with a few exeptions looked at the seeming and not at Melkor´s heart. I wonder what sad things Celebrian will be told next.

Author's reply

You know, it's an interesting comparisation - I think you're into something with that. Yes, Celebrían will have to learn a lot more sad things before the feast is over.

Fantasia · 10 July 2009 · Chapter 12: The Beginning of a Long Tale

OH! I feel like I'm in a history class, I'dont know why History teacher don't teach their classes as wonderful tales, for sure you will learn more and it has been the way that most of the people's history has pass through the generations...Great chapter, waiting for more

Author's reply

Thank you. :) There are four more chapters written, and after that, let's hope that I'll find the inspiration to continue the tale. Your lovely comments are a great inspiration in themselves. ;)

Larner · 9 July 2009 · Chapter 9: TheTales To Be Told

A good deal of information shared with her. Nice, Soledad.

Author's reply

Thanks. :) Sometimes the story turns a bit lecturing, but it was great fun to write.

Dís Thráinsdotter · 9 July 2009 · Chapter 11: A Silver Spirit

It would be lovely to listen to his music and if he is kin to Elrond I can see why Celebrian would like to meet him. She must be worried for her children, they face the same choice as their father did and that is not pleasant. I look forward to the next chapter.

Author's reply

I always thought that the choice of the Peredhil was a particularly cruel one. Whatever they chose, it led to sorrow. Why the Valar thought they'd be doing them a favour is beyond me.

Dís Thráinsdotter · 9 July 2009 · Chapter 10: The Songs That Are Sung

Poor Meril, it looks like something dreadful has happened to her and that she has seen many dreadful things. The song sounds wonderful, it would have been nice to be there.

Author's reply

She's seen a lot indeed. The First Age wasn't a nice one for those living in Beleriand. It all will be revealed... eventually.

Fantasia · 8 July 2009 · Chapter 10: The Songs That Are Sung

Have I told you how much I love this story? I love your writing style in this particular story (I love your other ones too)… "washing herself by every chance seemed to become a sheer irresistible urge since last year" great detail that show how she feels, sometimes we forget that she was a captive of orcs, even if Tolkien didn't specified what kind torture she suffered, I assume that the orcs did more than a beating to her.

Author's reply

Thank you. :) Yeah, that's what I assume, too. But I've left it to the imagination to any readers with intention. Sometimes it's better to say less, don't you think? Author Reply: Sorry - to the imagination of *my* readers was what I meant. Still too sleepy, it seems. *g*

Dís Thráinsdotter · 7 July 2009 · Chapter 9: TheTales To Be Told

It is a sad fact that at times people are forced to take up arms when they were not ment to do so in the first place. I guess that the kinslayings were dreadful events, for both sides, and that is the reason for Celebrian´s parents not to talk about them. Am so looking forward to the next chapter.

Author's reply

I'm always annoyed when the Teleri of Alqualonde are portrayed as weepy ninnies who let themselves be slaughtered without resistance. No, they did resist - and it brought upon them the horror of kinslaying, too. So, in a way Feanor and his madness slaughtered their souls, too.

Larner · 6 July 2009 · Chapter 8: The First Green Leaf

The laughter itself is a sign she is healing, I think! Elrond would be glad to hear it, I am certain. And more of her husband's family history is revealed to her.

Author's reply

Considering that Elrond was related to just about every single important Elf, I assume she still has a lot to learn about relatives. *g* Yes, Elrond would be glad. None like the Súruli to lift a troubled spirit on a feast.

Dís Thráinsdotter · 6 July 2009 · Chapter 8: The First Green Leaf

It would have been an honour to meet the first Legolas. I can understand if Glorfindel is not fond of talking about the fall of Gondolin, who can speak easily of their own death? It is hard enough to speak of the death of others, ones own must be harder still to talk about. But it is also nice to hear Celebrian laughing again, I have the feeling she has not had a good laugh for some time.

Author's reply

The first Legolas was someone who always intrigued me. When this story was first posted to FF.Net, the Silmficcers wanted me to bring back Gimli the blind Elf, too - but that seemed a little too much, even for my creative anachronism. *g* But if I ever write the Forgotten Realms/Lost Tales x-over, I'll include Gimli (the Elf).

Fantasia · 6 July 2009 · Chapter 8: The First Green Leaf

It is getting better with every new chapter, to know all this people from the old legends, wonderful...She laughed, good, maybe healing is starting now.

Author's reply

Thanks. :) Yes, the healing has started, but she still has a long way to go, I'm afraid.

Dís Thráinsdotter · 5 July 2009 · Chapter 7: The Feast of Double Mirth

I would love to hear the songs as they go to the home of the Tree People. I am also sure that the feast will be merry indeed, now that all are gathered. Ilverin´s description of Glorfindel made me laugh, I guess he has always been a person who has made others happier when they needed it.

Author's reply

Glorfindel is great, isn't he? One day I might even continue A Tale of Never-Ending Love, which is his very special story. I'd love to portray him as the boisterous warrior in Gondolin. Actually, I'm also planning to write another Forgotten Realms crossover, with Drizzt Do'Urden ending up in Gondolin and making friends with Glorfindel. It would be soooo much fun to write, had I not dozens of unfinished WIPs already.

Larner · 5 July 2009 · Chapter 7: The Feast of Double Mirth

It sounds a beautiful celebration! And she digs to the heart of the celebration!

Author's reply

Speak about timing, eh? *g*

Larner · 5 July 2009 · Chapter 6: The House of the Hundred Chimneys

Ah--most interesting that Elrond's home was patterned in part from this house, and many of his habits as well.

Author's reply

I don't know where *that* idea came from. Perhaps because it was called the Last Homely House, and what Celebrían really needs is a home, not Finarfin's court.

Larner · 5 July 2009 · Chapter 5: Gilfanon a-Davrobel

A delightfully gentle journey for her, I see. And I'd forgotten about the Suruli!

Author's reply

They are neat, aren't they? Even if you can't see them. It would be interesting to know, wat kind of role these 'lesser' spirits would have played, had the Professor not sorted them out of the mythology.

Larner · 5 July 2009 · Chapter 4: Meril-i-Turinqi

So she begins to see her options presented. Alas the drink doesn't work in Middle Earth. But perhaps she will learn still other options that may work more slowly yet be as effective.

Author's reply

I'm still of two minds whether she should ask for the drink or not. We'll see... hopefully in this Age yet.

Larner · 4 July 2009 · Chapter 3: Littleheart

Ah, but it HAS been a LONG time since I read Lost Tales. I'd forgotten about Meril.

Author's reply

She has intrigued me from the moment on I first read Lost Tales. When this story was first posted to the Silmarillion section of FF.Net, the Silmficcers kept guessing who she was and what she did for weeks. :)

Larner · 4 July 2009 · Chapter 2: The Journey

Loved the description lifted from LOTR. It so fits any arrival there, I think! Beautiful!

Author's reply

Thank you. :) I considered writing something of my own for quite a while, had several tries, and - of course - all fell short compared with the original. So I thought that as long as I give proper credit, the Professor probably wouldn't mind.

Larner · 4 July 2009 · Chapter 1: Mithlond

Interesting that she chooses to go unaccompanied by her family, yet feels comforted when she realizes the land has ties to her husband.

Author's reply

Well, she didn't want to subject them to the Sea, in case they'd hit by the Longing. That doesn't mean she's stopped loving Elrond. I was always comforted by the thought that they'd reunited one day. Am very fond of Elrond, from the time on that I read "The Hobbit" for the first time.

Larner · 4 July 2009 · Chapter 0: Introduction

Interesting warnings here. Have read parts of Lost Tales, but haven't found them as interesting as the final accepted canon stories, I'm sorry to say.

Author's reply

Hey, that's okay! We're all different people. Personally, I'm bored to death by the Silmarillion, while love all the older stuff. A good thing the Professor didn't make up his mind in a lot of things - that way we all can find something we really like. ;)

Dís Thráinsdotter · 4 July 2009 · Chapter 6: The House of the Hundred Chimneys

The house looks awesome and I would love to go there. The feast also sounds lovely and it would have been nice to be there to eat, talk and sing with them. Maybe Celebrian finds out more about Meril there.

Author's reply

The truth about Meril will come out, bit by bit. She has quite a past. Thanks for the support. :)
