Celeritas · 18 November 2008 · Chapter 13: Obdurate
Powerful. That was really, really close--my best hope for all of this is that later on such memories will help him to forgive those Exiles who return penitent--even those who participated in the Kinslaying.
Kaylee · 17 November 2008 · Chapter 21: Apology
Yay, Osse and Finda made up, and Olwe's going to be all right now, and I'm just so glad everything's going to be all right! *hugs all around* Beautiful tale, meldenya!! ~Kaylee
Author's reply
Poor Olwe still has to recover from that serious concussion, cracked skull and broken scapula, but, yes, everything will be all right for a while. Eventually I'm going to have to tackle his meeting with Feanor and his reaction to the Kinslaying, though. Thanks for being one of my most faithful reviewers!
Virtuella · 17 November 2008 · Chapter 21: Apology
Another charming vignette. I am enjoying these very much. They work so well as little snapshots and each is unique. Small niggle: "as even the gentle lurch as the sailboat stopped" - I would try to avoid one of the two "as".
Author's reply
Thanks for reviewing! I looked at the sentence and changed the second "as" to "when". Thanks for the suggestion!
Edlyn · 17 November 2008 · Chapter 21: Apology
Twinling, I think the thing that I like best about this whole sequence (and thanks for letting me see them all in "preview") is the very evident friendship between Osse and Olwe. It was especially nice to see this after Osse's "Did you miss me? ... I missed you." in 'Swimming'. Hugs, Edlyn
Author's reply
I'm being surprised by the relationships that Olwe has developed with Ulmo and Osse every time I listen to the Muse. I'm very glad that you enjoyed this piece.
Celeritas · 17 November 2008 · Chapter 21: Apology
Oh, this was very sweet. "Being angry isn't an excuse" is something that a lot more of the elves we meet in the Silmarillion should learn!
Author's reply
Aye! I hope that I'm not making Olwe out to be a saint, because he isn't one by a long shot. It's just that so far the scenes mostly seem to show him at his best rather than worst. If the piece that has been simmering away in my mind about the actual Kinslaying itself ever gels, that's going to be one of his worst moments...
Larner · 16 November 2008 · Chapter 21: Apology
Between Olwe, Osse, and Finderato they see to things that need seeing to, I see; and love that the apology was accepted. Ah, it's so good to have a friend among the Maiar! Lovely image, the young Elf being hugged by Osse!
Author's reply
One thing that occurred to me after I posted the piece, was that Osse is probably amused now by the fact that he'd been told off by an elfling. At the moment it occurred, he was already angry, but after he'd had time to calm down... And at least Findarato can honestly tell his amme that he apologized to Osse and it was accepted. She still won't be happy that he mouthed off, though. *grin*
Larner · 16 November 2008 · Chapter 20: Trust
Yes, let's complain right to the one in charge of this mess! Wonderful! And at least Osse's willing to make things right again! Poor Maia! Love the transformation!
Author's reply
Oh, I really appreciate your comments on each of these pieces, Larner. I'm enjoying discovering things about Olwe and Osse and Findarato that I'd not considered before. It's very interesting watching a character develop through recording the events he lives through instead of an on-going mental monologue, which is what I had originally thought this series would be. If nothing else, NaQuaWriMo has shown me that it is possible to write engaging fics that are in a slightly "detached" style, while maintaining a single character's POV. So I've learned something I didn't know before. :) Thanks for reviewing!
Larner · 16 November 2008 · Chapter 12: Squall/Trust/Apology
It's wonderful that they can complain right to Osse himself. But to see Olwe hurt and young Finderato having to take over--the poor young Elf! Well told.
Author's reply
I've loved the character of Finrod ever since I first read THE SILMARILLION. I had to have Olwe spending time with his grandson. The challenge was to show a youth with the seeds of strength and courage that could conceivably grow to become the King of Nargothrond who was willing to give up his crown in order to fulfill an oath. Thanks for the lovely review. :)
Jancy · 16 November 2008 · Chapter 20: Trust
I think NaQuWriMo is such a cool idea. At least its easier than NaNoWriMo! Well-written and a joy to read!
Author's reply
Thank you so much for letting me know how much you are enjoying this. :) Actually I wouldn't say easier, because I am spending a significant amount of time on each segment. But I feel this is more satisfying than just churning out 1600+ words per day of no particular quality. I'm hoping that the concept spreads so that next year more people might be inclined to give it a try. :)
Celeritas · 15 November 2008 · Chapter 20: Trust
Hah! The image of young Finrod telling Osse off was simply priceless! "Valar, Ossë! If this is what I feel like when I'm not the target of your wrath, I do not wish to be the focus of your anger." I rather agree! It's a good thing that Olwe is on such good terms with him.
Author's reply
The mental image of Finda reaming out Osse was the first thing to hit my mind when I wrote this bit. The rest just sort of fell into place while exploring the idea. The hardest part was writing it from Olwe's POV. Several times I slipped over into Findarato's POV and had to go back and fix it. :) Thanks for reviewing.
Thalanee · 15 November 2008 · Chapter 12: Squall/Trust/Apology
I really like this story. I think Olwe is one of those interesting characters in the Silmarillion, that are for some reason overlooked when it comes to fanfictions. I'm glad I finally found yours. Greetings Thalanee P.S.: That's a mean ending point;-) Now we are all wondering what will happen to poor Olwe (Though we know that he will survive)
Author's reply
Thanks for reading and commenting on this series of vignettes. It's funny how "vocal" Olwe has become in my mind, considering that in THE SILMARILLION he's only got a few lines of dialogue and is referred to in less than a dozen instances. I blame the muse for the cliff-hanger... that's where she left me hanging! :)
Nieriel Raina · 13 November 2008 · Chapter 10: Sailing Lesson (a double drabble)
this is one of my favorites. :) Great job!

Nieriel Raina · 13 November 2008 · Chapter 12: Squall/Trust/Apology
ACK! Oh, that was so evil of you to leave us hanging like that! I would never... Okay, so I would. :) Great cliffie, and a great opening. I can't wait to see more.
Author's reply
*Grin* When it comes to cliff-hangers, I don't actually plan them. The Muse left me hanging! I think she learned from your muse, you know! Thanks for reviewing!
Celeritas · 13 November 2008 · Chapter 12: Squall/Trust/Apology
A multiparter! I look forward to finding out if everything's all right! And I approve of your involving Finrod, who I imagine will be quite capable (for his age) at handling the situation. Don't tell him I said this, but he's my favorite Silm!elf.
Author's reply
Finrod is my favorite Silm!elf, too... although Olwe is coming up a challenging second! Thanks for letting me know what you think of this series. :)
Celeritas · 13 November 2008 · Chapter 11: Escape Attempt
*silly grin* This was so cute!
Author's reply
I was grinning madly as I wrote this bit. I hoped that I didn't make it so sweet as to require an insulin warning.
Kaylee · 12 November 2008 · Chapter 12: Squall/Trust/Apology
oh no meldenya!! Olwe's hurt!! *hopes he'll be all right* And I hope Osse is very VERY sorry! Naughty Oshosai! *glares in his general direction* I hope Uinen gave him a piece of her mind! I want more story! *grin* ~Kaylee!
Author's reply
Maybe I'll write up about Uinen's reaction to this incident, but right now she's just glaring at her spouse. *grin* I'm so very glad that you are enjoying this series.

This gave me some much needed laughs. Thank you. My favorite line: "We'll give you two weeks before we send out search parties." ~ Indy
Author's reply
I'm so glad that it gave you the opportunity to bring mirth into your day. And that's my favorite line too!
Edlyn · 12 November 2008 · Chapter 11: Escape Attempt
Awww! You wrote! This was so sweet, twinling! I can just see Earwen and Arafinwë blushing and the loving and (definitely) knowing expression on Olwë and Lirillë's faces. This is one way to escape any unwanted chivaree! Great job! Edlyn
Author's reply
Well, you well remember that I wasn't able to escape the chivaree on my own honeymoon. I decided to have mercy on Arafinwe and Earwen instead. *grin* I'm glad you liked it!
Virtuella · 12 November 2008 · Chapter 11: Escape Attempt
That is just too sweet for words! Well, obviously not, you've managed to put it into words, and very polished ones at that. ;-)
Author's reply
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed this. Thanks for reviewing!
Larner · 12 November 2008 · Chapter 11: Escape Attempt
For bride and groom to slip away alone together and get caught--and by Daddy! Heh! But at least the lessons of the last chapter have obviously sunk in!
Author's reply
It was fun following up on the Sailing Lesson with the reason it was so necessary. :)
Kaylee · 12 November 2008 · Chapter 11: Escape Attempt
Ada!" Eärwen's fair face went pink as she glanced up at her newlywed husband. "Daughter!" Olwë relented and smiled at the couple, opening his arms to them. He embraced them and then, keeping his arms about their shoulders, walked them to where the flower bedecked sailboat was moored. "You can sail away as you planned, but your Ammë and I were just making certain that you hadn't forgotten anything you'll need." Lirillë stepped off of the boat onto the pier, beaming at the younger elves. Arafinwë blinked, "But—how did you know? We kept our plan secret from everyone." Olwë clapped the prince on the shoulder, grinning. "That's my secret. Just get on board before the guests get curious." He kissed his daughter on the brow, and his new son likewise. "Be happy, my children. May the One bless you both." Once the couple had boarded, Olwë and Lirillë released the hithlain mooring ropes, and the elegant craft drifted away from the pier. "We'll give you two weeks before we send out search parties," Olwë called as the Noldo and his bride sailed off into the starlit night. He watched them out of sight, holding his own wife close. *laughs* Meldenya, I think this was the best part, though I loved the whole thing to pieces. Particularly Arafinwe's "But-how did you know?" Typical ner! *snort* *grin* Males...so clueless. *winks* Well, most of them anyway. Olwe certainly wasn't! ~Kaylee!
Author's reply
*grin* I guess I can safely say that just about the whole thing was your favorite part. I'm very happy you enjoyed this so much!
Larner · 11 November 2008 · Chapter 10: Sailing Lesson (a double drabble)
And I love this one, too. Yes, a marvelous moment, to see the Noldo now learning from the Teleri lord. And am glad he's brave enough to try! All for the love of a fair maid....
Author's reply
This ficlet was much fun to write after the serious nature of the last few. I like the idea that Arafinwe and Earwen did marry for love, not for political reasons (or at least not just for political reasons!). When one is going to spend the duration of Arda's existence with one's in-laws, it is a good thing to be on friendly and affectionate terms with them.
Larner · 11 November 2008 · Chapter 9: Grieving
No, not just the Elves and Men of Arda have lost ones they've loved. And the thought of Olwe comforting Ulmo himself is such a tender one. Thank you for this.
Author's reply
I think that it is easy to forget that the Valar are also Children of Eru, and despite the powers they wield, they too need comfort when things go awry. I have come to feel that Ulmo actually would be the Vala most likely to turn to the Firstborn for comfort, for has ever loved them, and has had more interaction with Olwe and his people than any of the other elves in Aman. Thank you for reviewing!
