"he laughed with awe and joy -- and not a little justification" -- A perfect description; I can see his face. And perhaps that was part of the reason for the naming of Alqualondë.

Author's reply

I'm so glad you liked this. I can't give a detailed enough description of the face I see, but I'm glad that you were able to "see" it anyway. :) Thanks for reviewing!

Oh, wonderful! The swans have come and offer the help they can!

Author's reply

The description of the swans pulling the ships in the SIL has always been a very vivid scene in my head--and Ted Naismith caught that vision beautifully in his artwork, which I saw in the Illustrated SILMARILLION second edition. There was no way that I could leave that out of this series. :) Thanks for reviewing!

That was beautiful and polished indeed.

Thank you for reviewing. I'm very pleased with how these are coming out. Well worth the time and effort!

You know, it strikes me that it must have taken a great deal of faith to even begin the Great Journey. To get on a ship, a frail vessel of wood and hope, and trust it to hold you, your family and your people to take you into the great unknown, out into seas you can only imagine at the vastness of.... That's faith. Lovely yet again.

The Silmarillion says that Tol Eressea was anchored, at the Teleri's request, within sight of the Pelori mountains, and that the light of the Two Trees streamed through the Calacirya and lit the western side of the isle. So the distance to travel wasn't anything like the distance they'd journeyed on the isle itself across the Sea, but it still would be daunting. I am finding that I really like being in Olwe's head. I hope he keeps telling more about the key events of his life as I work my way through each day's drabble/ficlet. Thank you for reviewing, I really appreciate hearing how my story affected a reader. :)

More Olwe! This reminds me a lot of the various Biblical tests of faith, where God (in this case, Ulmo) tells someone to do something and they just have to trust that it works, even though they don't yet know how. So very Silm-like.

Author's reply

Celeritas, thank you for your kind remarks. I hate to admit that the Noah parallels hadn't even occurred to me, and this drabble drifted into my mind while I was listening to the fast and testimony meeting at church today!

Larner · 2 November 2008 · Chapter 1: Looking West

What a wonderful mood you've woven in this drabble! Love the scene!

Author's reply

Thank you for reading it and letting me know what you think! :)

Silmarillion tales! :D This is lovely. I admire people who can write only 100 words and make a tale. Definitely a craft to it. Not many write Olwe either. Looking forward to the rest!

Author's reply

So am I! :) I have no actual plan of who or what I will be writing about each day other than it will be from the Silmarillion. So I'll be as surprised as the readers! Thank you for reviewing!

Ooh, daily Silm drabbles? What excitement! This one was a nice exposition of the Telerin sea-longing and the general desire to get closer to the holy light--something Olwe especially would want since he knows his brother has seen the Trees.

Author's reply

I just can't see the Valar not wanting to interact with the Firstborn after waiting so very long to meet them. And since Olwe finds himself in a leadership role that he most certainly was not groomed for, it just seems appropriate to me for Ulmo to take things in hand and help him along. Hmmm. Olwe has a parallel in Arafinwe after the Rebellion of the Noldor... Arafinwe wasn't intended to be the King of the Noldor either.
