· Chapter 41: The Maiar Strike Back
Tell me I didn't say this. Please, tell me that I didn't make such a fool of myself.
In my language, "reading" is translated with "lectura" and right now I did very much like a character from a comedy written by one of our authors. This character tried to translate "mot-a-mot" her words and expressions in French, coming out of course with unbelievable funny things and making the utmost fool of herself. Well, I did it too.
I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry....."burying herself in a big black hole"
Again, I'm very sorry for saying this, even unwillingly, and allow me please to reformulate:
Thank you so much for a refreshing and heartening READING.
(meaning, Iti multumesc foarte mult pentru o lectura invioratoare si datatoare de sperante. - rough translation )
Looking veeery ashamed, Sitara
Author's reply
Not to worry... just one of those false cognates that crop up between related languages, is all. *grin* Apology accepted.

· Chapter 41: The Maiar Strike Back
Huh, the story seems to unfold nicely from this point on ...As it did so far, of course. "smile" Apparently, this would lead to the end we all know: Glorfindel turning back to Middle-Earth in order to take care of Turgon's descendants and fulfiling his utmost desire to be needed. Well, I suppose I should keep my mouth shut, but, as always, I cannot help myself. "sheepish grin"
Anyway, what I have absolutely loved in this chapter is the way Nienna and her Maiar dealt with Lisselinde. Their care and gentleness (along with the need to not have another Sauron) got me almost weeping. Very moving. Although (if I recall correctly "wince")Lisselinde's doing wasn't out of pure mischief, but rather jealousy and perhaps prejudice, she deserves another chance and I simply love the way you're managing to redeem "villains". "smile"
Again, the Maiar are absolutely adorable and Tiutalion ans Nyereser are among the best OC's I've ever seen in a fandom. Glorfindel comparing Lisselinde with Morgoth...harsh, but I personally cannot say that the accusation is exaggerated. Furthermore, in a way, Lisselinde acted even worse than Morgoth, for she's been using elflings, even if her agenda was nowhere near like Morgoth's.
Thank you again for a refreshing and heartening lecture. Sitara
Author's reply
Well we still have a ways to go before Glorfindel returns to Middle-earth so dont hold your breath. *grin*
I'm glad you liked the way Nienna and her Maiar dealt with Lisselindë. She made a mistake and is sorry for it, so they will naturally treat her with compassion and respect. Lisselindë's mistake was in thinking she knew everything she needed to know about the Eldar and their motivations and felt justified in bringing Finrod down a peg or two, but, of course, she had no right to do that and so her punishment.
Still, I think that ultimately she and Glorfindel will be good for one another, though for different reasons.
I never lecture... I simply tell a story. What you or other readers get out of it is your affair, not mine. *grin*

My hope is that both Elf and Maia will experience healing from each other. (That was quite clever of Nienna.) I can't wait to find out what mischief they get into as I know they will. How could they not.

1) The safest road is to simply be yourself — the good and the bad — and let others worry about themselves.
2) You have lost one life and those who gave you a sense of purpose and identity, but you have a new life and there are those, ... , who would gladly help you find your way to a new purpose and identity, if you will let them.
3) Doing is not important right now; being is. Concentrate on just being yourself, nothing more.

The Valar and Maiar kind of remind me of a child stirring up ants and watching what they will do next. I still marvel while reading these stories that they, for all of their knowledg,e understand the Firstborn as little as they do. Looking forward to the next chapter!
Author's reply
Well, if you recall in "Elf, Interrupted 1", Ingwë says the very same thing to Glorfindel. *grin* And as Glorfindel pointed out in this chapter, knowing *of* something doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as *knowing* something (or someone). The Valar had nothing to do with the Theme that brought forth the Children so they are very much at a loss somethimes to figure out which way any of us will jump. It makes life a little more interesting for the Valar, if nothing else.

Well, this ought to be interesting! I do think it will help both of them, though I imagine in ways that none of the Valar can conceive of. It was interesting to hear what Glorfindel is truly feeling... fractured and if some part of him is missing. I hope he's able to find that soon, he needs to be healed and whole. Looking forward to the next chapter.
Author's reply
I'm sure that Glorfindel will 'find himself' eventually and most likely with Lisselindë's help and the help of others. I'm sure *everyone* is looking forward to the next chapter, including me. *lol* Thanks for the review, Radbooks. I'm glad you are still enjoying this tale.

Nienna´s Maia will get spoiled with all the entertainment certain elves provide them with. They will be bored out of their mind when Glorfindel finally leaves.
I wonder into what trouble Glorfindel and Lisselinde get themselves. Hopefully both will feel better after spending some time together.
Author's reply
Well, I have the feeling that Nienna's house is never completely empty of Elves causing trouble, so the Maiar shouldn't get too bored once Glorfindel does leave. *grin*
We'll see in the next chapter (hopefully) just what sort of trouble these two get themselves into.

So the Maiar are bored without anyone turning the place upside down constantly? *grin* Well, if they ever get Glorfindel going, they might have too much excitement for their own good ;)
Hm, I think Lisselindë is right that she needs to know more about the Firstborn. And though I am not sure Glorfindel with his rather erratic behaviour of late is the right one to help her, it’s true that he needs a purpose. He is so obviously at a loss what to do with himself if nothing happens just now that is occupying him and no one needs him and his help.
Uh huh, the way Glorfindel and Lisselindë started that dinner didn’t look very well, but obviously it worked. I only hope both of them really gain something from that. The next chapters will be interesting, no doubt!
Author's reply
These particular Maiar are used to dealing with Elves who are in need of special healing and look forward to the sort of mischief such Elves can get themselves into.
The confrontation between Glorfindel and Lisselindë, of course, was 'staged' to some extent by the Maia as a way of goading Glorfindel into agreeing to stay longer. Her need is real, though, and Glorfindel's role in helping her won't be a sham and therefore his own healing will be for real as well.

”Let our impossible ellon see that he has nothing on impossible Maiar.” *grins* That only means he is in excellent company, doesn’t it? And I am sure they can learn a _lot_ of mischief from one another.
Well, Glorfindel hasn’t gotten into any trouble. Yet. (His sign-painting efforts hardly counts IMO!) But now he is going to be Lisselindë’s teacher in Elvishness 101, he has been _encouraged_ to get into mischief, and Nienna’s Maiar have standing orders to encourage him to do so. To my mind it is only going to be a matter of time before that will result in a truly legendary prank. So is even Nienna going to be taken by surprise by whatever they will cook up?
I can just about _see_ Irmo and Námo making their bets already… ;-)
Author's reply
I'm sure the Maiar (and the Valar) are holding their collective breaths waiting to see just what Glorfindel ends up doing with Lisselindë. *grin* And I have no doubt as well that Irmo and Námo are indeed making their bets already. It should be interesting for everyone all around.

Oh yes! Just imagine all the trouble those three can get into! Perhaps Glorfindel can start by teaching Lissalinde ribbon work, then they can go on to Mayhem and Mischief 101?
Nienna was right though, they did miscalculate, badly, with Glorfindel even if they need him ready sooner than he would have been, for whatever purpose, they should have taken his possible immaturity into consideration!
Trying to think up things for them to do, a raid on the kitchens, turning all the furniture upside down, horses in Nienna's work room and the workroom in the stable,(borrowed this one from Larner) painting all the flowers different colours, I am sure they have lots of ideas?
More please,

Hi Lynda. I'll have to keep some of your suggestions for causing mayhem in mind. Some of them would require massive cooperation with all the other Maiar making sure Nienna doesn't find out too soon, though I'm sure they would all jump at the chance to help out. *grin*

I'd been wondering about Lisselinde, so I was glad to see her again. I just wanted to pick her up and hug her at the dinner.
Hmmm. Just how much mischief CAN a maia and a Reborn get into in two weeks? *Grin*
Excellent chapter!

Thanks, Rhyselle. I'm gald you enjoyed this chapter. · Chapter 40: Maia and Mischief
I feel so sorry for Glorfindel here. He obviously can't cope- he needs to relearn how to relax.
"We don’t want anything from you." Yes, actually, you do. You want Glorfindel to be happy.
"No one, and I do mean no one, is permitted in Lord Námo’s demesne without his expressed permission. I would not be so foolish as to even try." And if he wouldn't have been so explicit, I could see Glorfindel go and bugging Námo about it.
"The Maia laughed loudly at that, reminded of past times when he and his brother in the Thought of Ilúvatar used to do precisely that and still did, much to the despair of both Lady Nienna and Lord Námo." *laughs*
"People generally either choose to be themselves or they try to be what they think others want them to be, whether that is actually true of others or not. Our perceptions color our choices in all things, and sometimes our perceptions are faulty. The safest road is to simply be yourself — the good and the bad — and let others worry about themselves. What they think of you is also immaterial so long as you remain true to yourself." Very good advice, something more people in real life should follow. (Including myself at times...)
"Doing is not important right now; being is. Concentrate on just being yourself, nothing more." And that's hard enough without trying to figure out fifty other things at once like Glorfindel is.
Nice visual of the embroidery! Is that something you've done? (I noticed in your profile you do embroidery.)
"'I considered setting fire to the cottage,' he replied." *snorts* He must _really_ be bored.
Okay, what did Arafinwë do? (Though I have a feeling the incident is a spoiler.)
Yes, the paint being there is certainly suspicious.
"Paint the entire cottage turquoise? As lovely a color as turquoise is, my friend, an entire house of that color would give even me nightmares." Unfortunately, I used to live in a house that _was_ painted green. (Naval base housing- wasn't by my parents' choice.)
"'Maybe we can give him one,' Marilliën said, her expression wickedly gleeful and several Maiar nodded enthusiastically." Oh, dear. Why do I have the feeling I'm going to greatly enjoy this next part?
As for what Glorfindel painted: *laughs aloud* That ellon is impossible.
Wonderful chapter!
Author's reply
Hi Indy. It's true the Maiar and Valar want Glorfindel to be happy but they don't actually want anything *from* him on a material level.
I think being true to yourself is one of the hardest things a person can be and it often takes a great deal of effort because there are so many forces (not all of them inimical, btw) out there trying to mold you into something else instead. The expectations of others (or what we believe are those expectations) play a heavy role in shaping us and it's hard to ignore since we all want to be liked. Being true to ourselves sometimes means not being liked by others and that can be hard.
As I pointed out to my beta who raised the same objection about the paints, the interior of Nienna's house, while there is a lot of woodwork, did have many rooms with walls painted and perhaps Nienna was considering (it being Springtime) that some of those rooms needed a fresh coat. So the paint served another purpose besides giving Glorfindel ideas for mischief. *grin*
I think you're the first reviewer to even make mention of what Glorfindel painted. I'm glad you found it funny. He really is impossible, isn't he? *grin*
Thanks for your review. I really appreciate it.

Do they have raccoons in Europe? We have more than our fair share of them, as is evident each spring and fall when so many of them wander out into traffic to get hit! Nice he's enjoying the wildlife! Heh!

Raccoons are actually native of the Americas, but we are talking about Valinor (not Middle-earth) where Yavanna created all the creatures we know and where the Americas arose after it was removed.

This was such fun to read.

Thanks, Tari. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. It took me years to realize that being myself and not what I thought others wanted me to be or what they wanted me to be was the only safe course to take in one's life. It's a lesson we all have to learn though not all of us learn it as early as one would like.
We should see in the next chapter what happens with Glorfindel and the Maiar.

Yay! another good chapter. I'm wondering what Nienna's Maiar will come up with, now they have leave to do something. Although I do have a hard time picturing an introspective Glorfindel, it might do him some good to do a little bit of thinking. Can't wait to see what's next, & if I forgot to say so, the previous chapter was really good too!
Author's reply
We'll probably see in the next chapter what the Maiar come up with. Glorfindel really hasn't had the time since leaving Lórien to be introspective but it's something we all have to be once in a while, even the mighty balrog-slayer. *grin* And there is lots of time before he leaves for Middle-earth for introspection. Glad you liked the previous chapter as well as this one. Thanks for letting me know.

Glorfindel is no longer in any danger to be bored to death, I think. Tiutalion got him on a good start for getting into mischief. The paint job might have been inspired by the events in Lórien, but he gave it his very own amusing twist. And it was much better than copying Arafinwë and trying to burn the cottage down.
The table runner embroidery for Nienna sounds lovely. I am sure she will be delighted to get it. I'd love to have something embroidered by Glorfindel, too!
Now I really look forward so see if the Maiar manage to get Glorfindel to enjoy his time there and the mischief so much that he wants to stay longer!

What is with those Elves and painting things? After adorning Irmo's pavilion from Lorien, they have begun to do some work with Nienna's property? "smilig lightly" But the best joke of all would be painting or writing something above the gate of the Halls of Mandos, I believe. THAT should be a sight to behold.
Glorfindel doing embroidery? I personally wouldn't have ever believed it. "wide eyes" But only because I'm of little good with a needle in my hands, it doesn't mean that anyone should be as useless as me. Shame on me!
More than ever, I'll notice the care and love the Valar and Maiar alike are showing for those wounded Children. This is truly heartening and, to tell you the truth, I barely can wait for more interaction between the Powers and the Firstborn. I just love the way you do this, Fiondil.
May Gos bless you forever. Sitara.
Author's reply
If you read the first book of "Elf, Interrupted" you would know that one of the things Glorfindel was taught while in Lórien was ribbon embroidery from Vairë's handmaidens. This goes back to a story written by Nilmandra and I borrowed the idea from her. Having done ribbon embroidery (spider-web roses are my favorites), I thought it would be fun to give *my* Glorfindel the same ability.
I'm glad you enjoy how I have the Powers interact with the Firstborn. I admit, I enjoy writing about it myself. Thanks for reviewing, Sitara. I appreciate it.

Hmmm. A bit of decoration on the cottage can hardly be described as a prank. Methinks there was a bit of inspiration here from certain elflings and Reborn and Irmo’s favorite, previously white, pavilion?
At least he did not burn down the cottage. Perhaps he felt it would have been copycattish, since Arafinwë made such a good start on it did it before him?
Oh well. Tiutalion’s little nudge was a start. And evidently subtle enough that Glorfindel’s suspicions have not been raised. As for the main event – it shall be interesting to see if he is able to give even Nienna a surprise.
And as for embroidered thank-you gifts: Wonder if Nienna won’t end up with an embroidered tablecloth of a size suitable for a banquet table in addition to that little table runner? That is, if Tuitalion is sufficiently successful in getting Glorfindel into trouble?
Typo alert: Arafinwë would have been an arsonist, not an arson.
Author's reply
Well, it think it's the name of the cottage that is the prank rather than the actually painting of the lintel, which, admittedly, could have been inspired by the Lórien incident. It is at least a start, and sometimes it's best to start small and work your way up. *grin*
Thanks for the typo alert. It's been corrected.

You describe his solitude and restlessness and emtpy bleakness of trying to waste time while utterly bored very well. I realy felt for him. Please cheer up the poor guy.
Author's reply
Glorfindel was quite young (as elves measure such things) when he left Valinor at the time of the Rebellion. I think he has a hard time actually remembering that time since all his identity is wrapped up in 'Glorfindel of Gondolin' rather than in 'Laurefindil of Eldamar'.

· Chapter 39: Glorfindel Alone
Glorfindel seems to be quite confused at the moment, feeling rather restless on the one hand, but exhausted on the other and not knowing what to do with himself. Maybe the problem is that in Gondolin he always had his schedule, the Halls of Mandos were very different from ‚real life’, and since his rebirth, he was always in company and more than occupied. That gave him a purpose, but was tiring, too, I guess. And now he’s too high strung to relax so fast.
Nienna might be right – Glorfindel can’t imagine being something different than a warrior. Though I am not sure it is a good idea to encourage him to get into mischief – she might rue that. Glorfindel is worse than Aldundil and Vorondil put together, of that I am sure :D
Huh, the poor ellon panicked at the thought of being alone? Now I am really worried. Maybe Tiutalion is right that Glorfindel needs to be alone with somebody who is there, but not much more than that. And I really hope he will be able to become friends with Tiutalion and to trust him a bit. For that’s true as well; his trust in the Valar - and not only them – is badly shaken.
The part with the doe was cute. Glorfindel really should tell Tiutalion about it; he would be glad to know Glorfindel had such a nice encounter and enjoyed it.
Author's reply
I'm sure that Tiutalion will do all he can to gain Glorfindel's trust and help him through this time. We'll see in the next chapter if Tiutalion is able to convince him to get into some mischief and relieve some of that pent-up boredom he's feeling. *grin*

Poor Vorondil. But he truly should get back to his apprenticeship.
Oh, Glorfindel. This is going to be harder on you than I thought. His reaction on the beach sounds like something I'd do if I was that frustrated.
Frumenty... Well, your story "One Night at the Laughing Vala" hasn't happened yet, but I can't help but think of that.
"[. . .] I think that being a warrior is all I want to be. Everything else that I am is wrapped up around that one thing." I agree with him.
Nienna apologized! *grins*
*blinks* Nienna _wants_ Glorfindel to get into mischief? Well, at least it will be contained to one area instead of all of Aman.
"'He’s afraid to be alone,' he said. 'Being alone terrifies him.'" The real question is why?
Glorfindel just needs to learn to trust, period. But that's going to be hard, but I agree- if he learns to trust the Valar, he knows that they will help him even when the Eldar aren't treating him well.
Love the image of Tiutalion watching over the sleeping Glorfindel and then cooking him breakfast.
"Tiutalion just smirked. 'But you don’t know when the party will be or even why it’s a surprise.'" Uh-oh.
The little bit with the deer is sweet.
"For some reason he couldn’t quite vocalize it just didn’t seem important or interesting any more." Methinks Glorfindel is a bit depressed.
Interesting chapter, and it went in the complete opposite direction of where I thought it'd go. I think a cottage like that would be heaven, but Glorfindel obviously isn't coping well.
