njomo · 30 July 2009 · Chapter 68: Trouble With Reborn

When I first read this chapter I thought to myself, "Is that all that happens?" *lol* But then I read it again and and it got me thinking about a few things. Glorfindel at first seems remarkably inactive despite his training with the Maiar. Or was he simply bent on guarding Finrod at all costs? I had to laugh at Finrod's question: “And you’re standing here, why?” because it echoed the question in my head. He does go into action later, but I wonder if he isn't a little disconnected somehow from what's going on, at least until Finrod is attacked. Just my impression-maybe I'm expecting too much from Glorfindel. Others have iterated the same questions I have about the link between Ingwion, Beleg and Finrod and how Glorfindel fits into that. I can understand Finrod and Beleg having a special link because of their particular experience during the hunt, but wonder how the others fit in. Lastly, I'm curious about the significance of the name Eredhel. Is the reaction to the name merely because it seems an odd name for any elf or does it have some special significance? I know what the name means, but find everyone's reaction intriguing, which I figure is the response you want from your readers. But maybe I'm reading too much into this. Thanks Fiondil. As always can't wait for the next chapter! Joanne

Author's reply

Glorfindel may be a bit disconnected or maybe he has learned a few things along the way, such as not to leap into every situation. As for the significance to Eredhel´s name, we may see a hint for it in the next chapter though it will not be blatant.

Sunny · 29 July 2009 · Chapter 68: Trouble With Reborn

No, this is definitely not Edrahil’s day. He _did_ have trouble with the crowds from the beginning, and Finrod and Laurendil _did_ try to soothe him. But that “rush hour crowd” in the marketplace coupled with a loud crashing noise was evidently just too much for him, and he went running off in a panic. Then he threatens that poor butcher. After which he falls prey to the blood-trance – and the one he attacks is _his king_!! (Makes me wonder if he might not right now be banging on the gates of Mandos, demanding to be let in. If so, I am sure Námo is Not Amused.) The names of Eredhel and Dúnamdir hints at interesting stories. Perhaps they may be told some time? I wonder what the reaction of the orc-brained idiot who let Edrahil out of Lórien will react to Dúnamdir’s opinion of him? ;-) The connections between Finrod and Beleg and Finrod and Ingwion were an interesting surprise. That the links are a result of the Hunt is a reasonable conclusion. Do these links extend only between Finrod and Glorfindel and the Hunters, or are the Hunters linked in a similar manner?

Author's reply

No, definitely not Edrahil´s day at all! We will learn in the next chapter what happened to him and how he is "retrieved". I do not know if Eredehel´s and Dúnamdir´s stories will ever be told but you never know. As for the link between the Hunters, I am not sure. We will have to wait and see. *sly wink*

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 28 July 2009 · Chapter 68: Trouble With Reborn

Oh no! The blood trance again...and I expect Glorfi's a bit smug, HE didn't slip his leash this time! But Edrahil...Where's the Feanturi when we need them? Come back Edrahil! *looks for him* He's not dead Atar Fiondil, please...don't let him be dead again! I think Lord Namo might not like it! Waiting anxiously for the next installment, which will hopefully be here by the time I get back from England (on the 10th or 11th) but no pressure!! Tye-melin, Kaylee!

Author's reply

Going to England! Cool! One of my favorite places. Anyway, the answers to your questions will be revealed in the next chapter which will be posted by the time you get back from your trip.

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 28 July 2009 · Chapter 67: Pêl Cuil ’Wain

So those two are both first and second cousins! Hah! What are they, hobbits? *snicker* Though on second thought, Arwen is something like third cousins three times removed to herself, as well...I'm sure it was Bodkin who posted the Master of Protocol fic that told me this. And first cousins sixty-one times removed to Estel...Anyway. *grin* I love this chapter, I want to see more of the families, learn more about those flowers, and why on Arda does everyone seem to think Laurendil and Manwen were kidnapped? Answers, Gilvagor! Tye-melin, Kaylee!

Author's reply

I thought it would be fun to have the elves sound like hobbits with their genealogies. *grin* Anyway, answers will be forthcoming eventually.

Larner · 28 July 2009 · Chapter 68: Trouble With Reborn

Ah! More stories to learn, and a panicked Reborn to seek, find, and retrieve! It's been a busy day!

Author's reply

A very busy day and it isn´t even over with yet! *lol*

Rick · 28 July 2009 · Chapter 68: Trouble With Reborn

The last several chapters (since my last review) have all been wonderful, including this one. So are "Hope of the West" and "Lone Elf" (if I'm reading Hisweloke correctly) joining the party permanently or just for the time being? (I know, wait for the next chapter!). I do hope Finrod finds himself or Laurendil able to bring Edrahil back - or will that be Glorfindel's job, seeing as how he knows from personal experience exactly what's happened to Edrahil, if it is indeed a leash-slipping. I was wondering if you are going to be more specific about what kinds of hybrids Finrod bought for his mother - annuals or perennials, scented, larger blossoms, re-blooming, etc? Not that I'm a gardener ... Keep writing & here's hoping your internet problems soon will be over.

Author's reply

Yes, the translations are more or less correct, Rick. They will not be joining the group permanently but they will play an important if brief role in the story. We will see next chapter how it all turns out with Edrahil. As for the flowers... I am no gardener either so that is why my descriptions are vague. I leave it up to the reader to decide what kind of hybrids Finrod bought for his mother.

Hel · 28 July 2009 · Chapter 68: Trouble With Reborn

So this time it was not Glorfindel who slipped the leash. The knifes triggered the blood-trance but what triggered the leaving of the body? The connection between the ellon is interesting. They can feel when one of them is hurt. I wonder what role the two Noldor have in the whole affair. And why Lord Namo didn´t appeared by now. It looks like this trip won´t be forgotten for a long time. And the Tol Eresseans have one more reason to gossip about the Amanian elves.

Author's reply

Answers to your questions will be in the next chapter, Hel. I am glad you are finding all this interesting enough to leave a review. Thank you.

Kitty · 28 July 2009 · Chapter 68: Trouble With Reborn

Oh Edrahil ... he's lost control completely, it seems. That poor young butcher! I was glad Finrod was able to interfere before he got hurt. But the relief didn't last long ... Beleg knew at once what happened? And Ingwion, too? Interesting. It seems their experience during the return from the tenth dimension has given them an unusual connection. At least I can't think of any other explanation. You know how to keep the drama up, really. First the blood trance and then slipping his leash – poor Edrahil. I'm beginning to wonder if it was a good idea of Irmo to send him ... Can't wait for the next chapter!

Author's reply

Hi Kitty. Yes, there does seem to be a connection between these elves because of their experiences with the tenth dimension and the "Hunt". We will see next chapter how it all turns out for Edrahil.

Kitty · 28 July 2009 · Chapter 67: Pêl Cuil ’Wain

Sorry for the late reviews, I've been a bit out of the loop with LotR recently. Seems it was not the best idea to introduce my friend to the world of Harry Potter – now we're taking the series apart, and that has proven to be quite distracting ;) You found an interesting way for these families to carve out new lives and businesses for themselves. Well, this time the Tol Eressëans were under no illusions about the identity of their guests from the beginning *grin* And now Laurendil knows he's been kidnapped. I'm sure he will make sure that nonsense is dispelled as soon as possible! And I hope the one (or ones) who is behind it will see more the former warrior than the new healer. Halmir's reaction to the visitors made me laugh. Hadn't thought that an animal breeder would categorize Elves in the same way. But I hope he's better with the animals than he did here *grin* Uh oh. I had feared there would be trouble, but hoped I'm wrong. But obviously not. Only that this time not Finrod and Glorfindel are causing it ...

Author's reply

I have been hard a work trying to imagine what the elves would do with themselves once they came to Valinor, how they would live and carve out new lives for themselves. It has not been easy but hopefully what I have come up with and why is reasonable. Halmir loves his job too much, I think. *grin* Next chapter will show what happened with Edrahil. The excitement is not over yet!

Larner · 26 July 2009 · Chapter 67: Pêl Cuil ’Wain

A most interesting development, that Laurendil and his wife are said to have been kidnapped! Love the names and the descriptions of the flowers!

Author's reply

We will see how these rumors affect the Progress. I am glad you liked the names and the flowers, Larner. Thanks for letting me know.

Hel · 25 July 2009 · Chapter 67: Pêl Cuil ’Wain

They will leave an impression the island, no mather if they could help the elves to find a new government. One just wonders what kind of impression... What puzzels me is the whole thing about the kidnapping of Laurendil and his wife and that Gilvagor and the others who know the truth didn´t say anything. They must heard the story. Why let it run rampage?

Author's reply

We will learn more about the rumors and why Gilvagor did not hear of them. And whatever impression they will leave it should be memorable regardless.

Agape4Gondor · 24 July 2009 · Chapter 67: Pêl Cuil ’Wain

Oh good grief!!!

Author's reply

Good grief, indeed!

Tari · 24 July 2009 · Chapter 65: Going to Town

I wonder if Gil-Galad has been reborn and if not, why? He certainly should be IMHO. I can feel for Eärnur as I’ve been in that position myself. While I am thoroughly enjoying the meeting of the elves and the determination to resolve all misunderstandings, I am sure someone is out there ready to throw a monkey wrench into the mix. It always happens that way. Hope you get your computer up and running soon. I have quite a bit of reading to do after returning from a two week vacation, so it will be a while before I’ve caught up.

Author's reply

Gil-galad is still alive at this time. We are only in the early part of the Second Age. He does not die until the end of the age almost 3000 years later. My internet is still out and will be for at least another month so I am using an internet cafe, coming in once a week to answer emails, post chapters and reply to reviews, so take your time catching up. *grin*

Tari · 21 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Tourists in Tavrobel

While it appears that some serious mending of relationships is occurring, I can't help but think there are troubles ahead. Just got back from vacation and have a ton of emails, both here and at home, to go through. I actually got to hold a live Koala bear and had my picture taken with it. Awesome!

Author's reply

There is of course the possibility of troubles ahead especially considering the people involved. *grin* Glad you had such an awesome time on your trip.

ellie · 21 July 2009 · Chapter 67: Pêl Cuil ’Wain

I don't know what to hope for at the end there - that there really is osm edanger to Finrod or that Edrahil is just "remembering". I really liked the horse breeder picking apart the ancestry of everyone. too funny! The estate they visited sounds lovely. That is one industrious and opportunistic extended family! I guess the newcomers to tol eressea had to be clever and take advantage of all opportunities in order to survive. The hostility toward teh amanians doesn't seem to run as deep as first suspected, though ti does teh seem to cover the surface of everyone's experiences - in other words, once folks actually meet Finrod and co they aren't quite so threatened by them being Amanians whereas the first reaction to hearing they are amanians is that they are bad. make sense? Anyway, another excellent chapter and can't wait for more! BTW, love the way your stories compiment and play off of each other with the Glorfy in prison story being published today and references to it and Finrod's initial crowd problem which Diaries covered a bit on the same posting day. The depth of your works is delightful!

Author's reply

hi Ellie. I am glad you enjoyed this chapter, especially the horse breeder. And I am glad you like how I interweave my stories. It is not easy to do but I think it is worth it to give more depth to all my stories.

njomo · 20 July 2009 · Chapter 67: Pêl Cuil ’Wain

Hi Fiondil, Oh my. And even Glorfindel couldn't react fast enough to stop Edrahil. This will not go down well with the good citizens of Tavrobel, but maybe they'll be forgiving when they find out Edrahil is a reborn. But what am I saying--I don't even know what really happened! Maybe Glorfindel was preoccupied after hearing the name of Egalmoth's father. I wonder if there's any significance behind them using those names in particular? I can't imagine why Glorfindel would bring up the prank involving Idril, as he seems to be embarassed by it, except for the reminder of his friend Ecthelion. An interesting chapter, but...yes, there's always a but!...can't wait for your next posting. Thanks Fiondil. Joanne

Author's reply

Some names among the elves are common rather than unique, but I think Glorfindel was taken by surprise at hearing Ecthelion´s name and, as you say, was distracted enough not to be paying attention. We will see in the next chapter what exactly happened with Edrahil.

6336 · 20 July 2009 · Chapter 67: Pêl Cuil ’Wain

Poor Edrahil, he must be feeling so overwhelmed, maybe Irmo should not have let him leave Lorien, I don't think he is ready for it yet. Glorfi and Finrod will take care of him though. Hope he does not kill to many baskets of produce with that sword of his though!More please, Lynda I hope Earwen likes the flowers Finrod brings her!

Author's reply

Edrahil probably should not have been let go so soon but that´s water under the bridge now and they have to deal with him as they find him. I am sure Finrod and Glorfindel and all the others will take good care of him. And I thing Earwen will just love the flowers Finrod brings her.

Aiwen · 20 July 2009 · Chapter 67: Pêl Cuil ’Wain

So something did happen, although I'm not sure precisely what. Nice cliff hanger.

Author's reply

Next chapter will reveal all.

Sunny · 20 July 2009 · Chapter 67: Pêl Cuil ’Wain

So Laurendil didn’t know that he – and his wife - was supposed to be kidnapped? I am sure he is going to dig until he finds out who is behind that little rumour – and why. (And he will certainly have help.) O, yes. Halmir would certainly never guess who his guests were. He was certainly wrong about the tribal affiliations of Finrod and Glorfindel. Though he was right that Finrod has both Vanyarin and Telerin blood, and while I don’t think you have said anything about Glorfindel’s mother, it might certainly be possible that she might have been a Vanya. Finrod and Glorfindel haven’t gotten into trouble _yet_, but I suppose the trouble was just starting when the chapter ended. Though it seems that it was really Edrahil who was the one who really was in trouble. Bad memories surfacing, perhaps?

Author's reply

Glorfindel´s mother was indeed a Vanya while his father was a Noldo, thus he Glorfindel was accounted as a Noldo. Anyway, we will see what the trouble is in the next chapter.

Larner · 13 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Tourists in Tavrobel

Ah--definitely a mixed welcome they find. And am glad they are finding something to ease the stomachs of the poorer sailors! Heh! Remember my first sail on the open ocean and how seasick I became!

Author's reply

A mixed welcome indeed, Larner! At least there are those who know what to do for the poorer sailors. Beleg should not have a much trouble with any future sailings.

Thalanee · 13 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Tourists in Tavrobel

Those poor elves in the shop *sniggers*... what was it you said about legends popping out of nowhere? I loved that piece about Cirdan and his people becoming very good swimmers very fast. I can´t help imagine him rowing out day after day and returning swimming ;-) That must have earned him quite a reputation. I can just picture Finwe or maybe Elwe or Olwe teasing him mercilessly while he´s occupied wringing out his hair and clothes... Does grabbing an offending ellon by the collar and lifting him up by it count as trouble, what do you think? So Glorfindel and Finrod are late. I wonder what they are up to... Greetings Thalanee

Author's reply

Hi Thalanee. I am glad you liked this early image of Cirdan. He must have come in for a lot of teasing by the others, but we know tha in the end he became quite good at what he does. Define trouble? *lol* At least Beleg is not tearing the poor ellon apart. We will learn next week why the others are late.

Ellie · 12 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Tourists in Tavrobel

I love Beleg with his "Hey, Bud, you got a problem?" attitude. I'm sure that everyone was quite surprised in that little shop with the sudden realisation that a king, a prince, and a legendary warrior were visiting. I really like the glimpse into the sailing supply shop and the meeting with the proprietor of the Inn who automatically expected compaints from patrons. What a wonderful insight into the reality of the day to day goings on in Tavrobel! I really like the way this story explores the mundane (politics in Beleriand versus Aman and small business goings on on Tol Eressea) and makes it so intriguing. I am pleased to see that Arafinwe wanted to personally thank those who helped his son before at the Inn, that is such a nice side of Arafinwe to glimpse - the dad being a dad sidde of him. I am worried about Finrod now though and Glorfy and the trouble they may have gotten themselves into.

Author's reply

Hi Ellie. Thanks for your comments. I am glad you like these little insights into the ordinary lives of the Elves. I enjoy exploring that part of their society. And Arafinwe is a very cool Elf, that is for sure. We will see next week just what is holding up Finrod and company.

Sunny · 12 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Tourists in Tavrobel

I hope your internet troubles will be resolved swiftly, and that they won’t occur again – whatever they are. I liked Beleg’s little quip about the only use he knew for ropes. That Gellamion has a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease, doesn’t he? And it certainly ensures that this day seems to become among the top contenders for “worst of his life”. Orchvann, indeed. *carefully makes note of the insult* At least the day has been nice for Arafinwë’s group. So far...

Author's reply

Hi Sunny. I'm glad you liked Beleg's quip about ropes. He has a completely different point of view about some things than Lindarion does, that's for sure. *grin* Gellamion is probably wishing the ground would open up and swallow him whole right about now. And Arafinwe's group might be having a good day so far, but there is no guarantee that it will last, not with Finrod and Glorfindel loose in Tavrobel. *lol*

njomo · 11 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Tourists in Tavrobel

Hi Fiondil, Sorry to hear about your Internet woes. I know how frustrating it can be, and my service interruptions so far have only been short-lived and easy to solve. You present an interesting dilemma in this chapter. Do the visitors make known to everyone who they are right away? If they don't, then they are more likely to hear the honest opinions of the natives, as in Olwë's case, but as we see that can lead to its own difficulties. And if they do introduce themselves right away, they may not gain as true a picture of the island as they desire. Then again, maybe that's not a true assumption, as we see with Gellamion. *grin* On reading this chapter I'm appreciative of what we now know about Gilvagor. I realized that I was a bit confused before about his status on Tol Eressëa. Now I understand and know, at least in part, and have a better feel for "who" he is. I do feel sorry for Margil, Belegorn and Artohir-all of them blindsided-by kings, no less! Now to find out what is keeping Finrod and Glorfindel from their lunch meeting with Arafinwë and company. Good conversation? One can only wish. Hope the computer gods smile on you and your Internet woes are brief-for your own sake, and yes, so that your readers aren't left in the dark for too long. Ah well, a little (or prolonged) suspense...the spice of life! Take care. Joanne

Author's reply

Hi Joanne. Unfortunately the internet problem is long-termed as recent flooding pretty much wiped the system out, but I have access to an internet cafe so that is okay. I should be able to get to the cafe at least a couple of times a week to post chapters and answer emails. You state the problem the kings have very well. Do they identify themselves immediately and perhaps not get as honest a response to their questions as they would like or keep silent and hope they don't encounter other kinds of problems otherwise. An interesting dilemma and there is no easy answer. We see how it works both ways here. I'm glad this chapter helped zou to get a better feel for who Gilvagor is. He is an interesting character and I haven't been able to explore his character more fully before this. Hopefully during this Progress we will come to know him better.

Aiwen · 10 July 2009 · Chapter 66: Tourists in Tavrobel

Orc-food. Nice insult. I like it. Sounds like they are having an interesting time. However, I have a nasty feeling that the group with Finrod and Glorfindel in it will find more trouble than the others put together. Just guessing from past events.

Author's reply

Hi Aiwen. We'll see in the next chapter just what sort of day Finrod and Glorfindel and their group are having and if they encounter any trouble. Glad you liked the insult.
