Ha, I knew it, the pin was for Námo!
Oh Fiondil, that was a great chapter! An exciting mix of drama and humor. The exchange between Artamirë and Glorfindel in the beginning was fun, as was Eönwë’s reaction. And I think I have to steal Veryandur away for a bit of cuddling. He’s so cute, introducing everyone, even the Elder King, to his stuffed toy and all that!
Ingwë’s speech was satisfying ; I hope certain people take it to heart. Though I somehow don’t truly believe it. Too many think themselves too smart to get caught.
Well, I had feared there would be happening something like what happened to Haldir. The fighting seems to trigger too many bad memories for the elves who fought in Beleriand. Luckily Aldarion didn’t get hurt, as there were so many around who knew at once what was going on and acted. But I don’t want to know what would happen if it was Glorfindel who ended up in this bloodlust – it would be difficult to overwhelm a fighter like him, particularly if he’s *truly* fighting ...
At least they worked out how to proceed now – it would have been sad if they had to disqualify Haldir. It was not his fault, after all. And I look forward to see him fight with Finrod.
Do you know there is something wrong with the update? It still shows up under the date of the 16th, when you posted the last time, instead of with the new date at the top of the first page of SoA. As I don’t use the notifications, I found it only by accident.
Author's reply
When I was updating last week I accidently clicked on "Publish" for this chapter instead of "Preview", as I wasn't ready to publish this chapter yet. That's why, I thin, the date shows last week's update. I have decided to post the next chapter (125) instead of waiting until later in the week so that the update will be current. Sorry for any confusion.
I figured that everyone would guess that Glorfindel's pin would be for Hámo. *grin* So no real surprises there.
As the intensity of the tournament increases I think you're going to find more such incidents of the Reborn, whether they are fighting ot not, increasing and that will be a concern for the Valar, especially Námo, who has a somewhat proprietary air over his former charges. We will see what effect, if any, such things will have on Glorfindel or Finrod in future chapters.
I am so behind reviewing! And I so loved these two chapters! Ok, short but to the point. I LOVED the way they caught the missing Sulimondil! Go Glory! And Finrod was brilliant in this chapter. Darn it all! Like I needed more characters to drool over... um, admire. *grin* I really like how you handled bringing them before Ingwe and all the warriors saluting with weapons, but the best part (yep, you guessed it!) was Námo showing up! I do so love your portrayal of him. I don't remember if I commented on that line of his "Sometimes being good and noble really sucks!" But I LOVED that line. You had me rolling.
and I think you updated and I didnt' get an alert. So I'm off to find out. Great couple chapters here! I love every minute of this tale.

· Chapter 123: Rumors Arrested
I loved the interplay outside the Vanyar fighters’ compound. Also all the fighters joining them later for the walk to the palace. [Mental picture of all the fighters in the camp -- plus archers, squires, family members, and hangers-on -- sitting in their tents, totally bored ... bored, bored, bored ... looking out the doorway every few minutes (very bored) in hopes that something interesting is happening at Finrod’s compound ... they might be doing something interesting ... they might be going somewhere (“We’ll come too!”) ... even if they’re merely entertaining visitors from the palace, it’s still more exciting than sitting in the tent being bored.]
“Yes, I’m curious about that too.” -- Námo is so good at what he does! (In this case, intimidating elves.) And his fashion sense here is spot-on.
“There is more at work here than meets the eye. These two may indeed have nothing to do with spreading the rumors. Others may well be playing their own game" -- Hm. I can’t believe Súlimondil “accidentally” forgot his appointment with Ingwë, or that he was in his cousin’s tent for no reason. On the other hand, I *can* believe they might have had little if any involvement with the rumors. On the *other* hand, if Súlimondil wasn’t hiding to give credence to the rumors, why *was* he hiding? I can even be really paranoid and believe he sat in the stands near Glorfindel that afternoon deliberately intending to goad Glorfindel into rash behavior, with the goal of discrediting the Reborn. Well, I’ve been expecting Bad Guys At the Tournament....
How fortuitous that Vorondil’s a hero when his parents are present to hear about it.
Sitting in the stands with Ingwë the next day: I’m sure Veryandur will have a ball. (What sort of picnic/carnival food do elves usually have at these shindigs?) I trust Súlimondil will be surrounded by guards, so there’ll be no doubt as to his status!
The Tol Eressëans will have a lot of stories about the Valar to tell when they get back to the island. Hopefully the word will get around.
Author's reply
I'm sure that many of the people sitting in the encampment were thinking those very thoughts and perked up when Finroda, et al marched by with Súlimondil and Valacar being escorted to the palace. Finrod and Ingwion probably had a time convincing them that not *everybody* could fit into the lesser audience chamber. *grin*
I'm sure that Súlimondil, at least, was cognizant of the rumor and may have even started the one about him being killed which is why he was hiding out in Valacar's tent where no one in Vanyamar would think to look, not knowing of the connection between the two. It was fortuitous that Vorondil just happened to be in the tent tending to Valacar when Súlimondil walked in, otherwise they might still not know where he was and he could've made good his escape.
I'm sure the Tol Eressëans and not a few of the Amanian elves will have *many* tales to tell about the Valar at the tournament that will keep them busy by the fireside for many a night of taletelling. *grin*

Hah! The rumormonger were caught. Although I agree with Lord Namo, they are probably not the only ones spreading these false tales. They might have started it, but there are enough others that believe in them enough to spread them.
Is the next chapter already available? I got an alert, but the link didn't work.
Author's reply
Sorry about that. I accidently clicked "Publish" when I was trying to click "Preview" so I could see if the chapter had formatted correctly. The next chapter is ready but I won't be posting it until the weekend.
And you are correct that while these two may have had a hand in the rumors, others were more than willing to pick up torch and run with it. Such is the way with rumors, even among the elves.

· Chapter 123: Rumors Arrested
I love hearing rumors for once! Not that I believe them or anything. It's just that I have a tendency to not be aware of my surroundings and not be sociable so I am not really hearing what is new and what is not. Unless of course I read it on the internet or in a newspaper.
I don't blame Veryandur for being afraid. I know I might if I was his age! How old is he anyway? When people say there is a vast difference between elves and men in reality there isn't that much at all. They both play, eat, rest, and work. That thought just came to me when I read the passage with the elflings, Eruanna and Lindorille playing with Yavie. Narmolle is such and adorable name. I never thought it would mean 'wolfie' though. May you please explain how you ended with that name? I just don't see how.
I am glad Ingwion won his match. I wonder whose better Findarato or Ingwion? I apologize to any Ingwion fans out there but my $Money$ is on Finrod! (remember, HE was the one in Middle-Earth) Is the next chapter on the tinco or parma list? (I know it's one of them I just sort of forgot)
Vorondil has grown up so fast. It's hard to believe he was the same elfling from the chapters when he conspired against Glorfindel.
If I am using the word correctly Sulimondil's name is an oxymoron. He is a bad elf yet his name honors the Elder King.
I keep forgetting to say this but congradulations on the MPA 2007: 3rd Place: Undying Lands! You deserved it! Though I do think your story should have won 1st place. You have *123 chapters*! Who in their right mind would write that much, even with determination? (Not blaming anyone here)(It's just and expression) I am glad though that you are writing this.
Namarie!
Author's reply
_Narmo_ "wolf" + _-llë_ "diminutive ending", so, "Wolfie" in child-slang. I happen to have a teddy bear that has been with me for over 30 years. It was given to me as a gift by a friend when I was undergoing treatment for cancer back in my early 20s. It proved a good companion and comfort to me then as now. The bear's name is "Beowulf" which is an Old English kenning for "bear" since the name means "bee-wolf". I usually just call him "Wolfie" and decided to put him into the story without specifying what kind of soft animal toy it was, letting the readers fill in the gap themselves.
The next chapter will highlight the tinco-list fighters since they had a break from fighting the afternoon before. Before the end of the tournament wnen all but the final match(es) between the two champions are described I will post the entire list so you will be able to see who fought against whom and who won each match.
Yes, Vorondil is shaping up quite nicely and should be an asset to elfkind when he fully matures. He still has 4-5 years to go before he reaches his majority and it may be slightly longer before he regains the emotional maturity that he lost after his Judgment. Veryandur is about 10 years old in human terms, just young enough I think to need a soft toy for comfort, especially in these unusual circumstance that are so different from anything he's ever known before.
As for Súlimondil... part of the irony of this story is assigning a name to a person that sometimes is incongruent with that person's character.
Thanks for the congratulations. I suspect I didn't get a higher award because the story is incomplete, but I'm just honored that it won anything. And as I'm a leftie, I'm always in my "right" mind when I'm writing! *grin*

another excellent chapter! love your characterization of the kings - especially arafinwe and ingwe. glad Fin and folk were able to capture the ones they went after so they could save the day. love the loyalty everyone shows finrod, too.
look forward to hearing arafin tell finrod about life immediately after the kinslaying.
what was the thing between ingwion and namo about at the end? hmmm
the intrigue in this tale is incredible. as soon as one prob seems to be solved we learn it is but one piece of the vast puzzle or one symptom treated of the whole disease.
sorry for the missing caps. it's hard to type one handed...

Hi ellie. Don't worry about it. Sorry you're forced to imitate Beren or Maedhros for the time being and hope you recover soon. Most likely the conversation between Arafinwë and Finrod about the Darkening won't take place in Elf Interrupted, but it might show up elsewhere in another story. *grin*
As for the intrigue and the conversation between Námo and Ingwion.... yes, it is one vast puzzle and there are many pieces that need to be fit together for it to be solved. This is just one of them.

"Sometimes being good and noble really sucks."
Is Namo using a bit of his foreknowledge here, indulging in anachronistic "future speak?" :) Whatever the case, it made me laugh. There's a certain charm in occasionally seeing characters who are supposed to be powerful and dignified (at least according to legend and What We Are Taught About The Powers That Be) acting so very human. Nice touch.
Author's reply
I know the word is anachronistic but I couldn't find a suitably medieval phrasing that worked quite as well and had the same (humorous) impact. Even my beta-reader agreed. I just figured that this is merely a "translation" of the Valarin equivalent into mod. Eng. in the good old-fashion tradition of the Professor himself. *grin*

"And any of the other Reborn," Olwë added. "They could easily become targets of people’s rage if these rumors are not quashed immediately" -- Yes, the potential is there for things getting really ugly.
“Have his family brought to the palace as well. They may know where he’s hiding." -- Hm. Súlimondil’s family....
I’m imagining poor Calalindalë’s reaction to the food fight at dinner!
Eruanna might not have been imitating Finrod with those doll-braids, armor and sword. Like Alassiel, she may have been inspired by seeing Region fight. [Though I don’t know if Region fought in Endórë, or if ellith wear warrior braids.]
Valacar lost to Ardamirë when he failed to block a thrust that caused his shield to drop -- *whispers behind her hand* Psst! Fiondil! In the previous chapter Valacar was fighting *Hallas* in this round; Ardamirë is still (and rather memorably) in the tinco list. Given Valacar’s character, we’re all thrilled he was defeated, no matter who did it....
Author's reply
Yes, things could get really ugly for the Reborn if the rumors aren't nipped at the bud. And you're right about Eruanna: she may well be inspired by Region rather than by Finrod, but we won't hell the ellon that, he might feel bad. *grin*
Thanks for pointing out the error. I was looking at the wrong match when I was writing that sentence. It's been corrected and Valacar is indeed figting with Hallas now.

I enjoyed this chapter thoroughly and am glad that these two got caught. Of course I don’t mind at all that Súlimondil got a bit ... err ... damaged in the process and that Glorfindel was the one to do it.
And Námo showing up was perfect, even if he was not allowed to do more than to watch. But his warning that there are even more who spread these mean rumours left me sighing. It is truly sad that it came to that at all, though it is not wholly unexpected. Oh well, if they spread the rumours further during the night and the next morning and then Súlimondil is shown to the masses it will give some people a bit to think about, I suppose. And the elfling sitting in Sador’s lap would be perfect to disprove the other rumour.
It seems my feelings were correct – there will be much more going on than only the Tournament. This Tournament gets more interesting with each chapter! So I can’t wait for the next update - it's truly a wonderful story, Fiondil!
Author's reply
Hi Kitty. Glad you enjoyed this chapter. It was a lot of fun to write, especially the beginning part where they are at the Vanyarin encamnpment trying to get in.
Yes, I'm sure Glorfindel felt some bit of satisfaction in being the one to deal with Súlimondil.
Námo, of course, didn't have to show up, but most likely did just for amusement's sake. Watching the elves squirm must have been fun, especially since all he really had to do was to intimate possible retribution from the Valar without actually coming out and saying it.
Tournaments, in fanfic or in real-life, are just the backdrop for the real drama of human (and elven) existence. It's the excuse for everything else that goes on during that time.

*stares disbelievingly at screen* Glorfindel did commit murder and Sador kidnapped the elfling? With help of the Lord of Mandos? Oh Valar – I think Námo is right. There has to be something in their water supply or the like and now they’re hallucinating!
"Sometimes being good and noble really sucks." How true! I said a similar thing when I was only a few years old, so it seems I’m in good company ;-)
Finrod and Sador did very well with Veryandur. I love this elfling more and more – he’s truly a sweet child.
Ha, I see Finrod’s entourage is unexpectedly useful. Valacar and Súlimondil are cousins? Interesting. And if they are behind these rumours ...
Off to read the next chapter!
Author's reply
Sometimes you have to wonder, when people act the way the do, if there isn't something in the water, because how else to explain irrational behavior?
Anyway, an entourage is a useful thing every now and then and to think that Vorondil, who started out as an involuntary member of Finrod's household, has proven to be so valuable.

Wow! I haven't read this in a *long* time. I was so excited to see all these chapters. The tournament has been a joy trying to guess who wins and who doesn't. And how could I forget about trying to find out who will win the overall tournament. I am having a feeling though that you might not even finish the tournament but will make something big, but not catastrophic happen. Then that is when Glorfindel departs for Middle-Earth.
I have loved how this is not a romance. I am not kidding because I try and find books that I am sure have none of that in them but then in the middle of the novel I find romance in it when it is under a totally different genre and everything! I like to call it *false labeling.*
Well when I read the end of some of the chapters they said that you were traveling for awhile. Did you like China that you saw? I so *EnvY* you. Not only that but also you being able to think up such a wonderous and fantastic story!
Namarie!
P.S. When are you updating next? I cannot wait!
P.P.S. Do we the readers get to read about Finrod's return to Lorien with the elflings?
Author's reply
Hi Nariel. Glad you are enjoying the tournament and it's only the first day! *gin*. This story is a romance only in the medieval sense of the word, though I do have poassibly two romantic threads running through the story: Finrod and Amarië; Glorfindel and Alassiel, but that's not the same thing as a romance in the modern sense of the word.
Anyway, I had a great time getting to see the parts of China I hadn't gotten to see the whole year I was here. Now I am living in Tai'an City (Shandong Province) which is very central to many cities and interesting historical sites and I have plenty of time for traveling.
I am updating even as I write this. We will indeed see Finrod's return to Lórien with the elflings, but not immediately. We have to get through the tournament first.
Thanks for reviewing and stay tuned. There's more to come.

Wow. I never saw that coming, though it's really not surprising I suppose. I'm trying to remember if that was the first flashback that Sador has had? I suppose it doesn't matter but I was just thinking about it and wondering.
Manwe coming down and talking to all of them after Glorfindel started after Súlimondil was... impressive or scary or both. How he could just say one word like that and get them all to stop. Actually, I'm surprised they weren't all on their knees! :)
I know the Valar think these flashbacks might work against the reborn in the eyes of the Aman elves but I thought the other elves and even Súlimondil were somewhat sympathetic to what Glorfindel was experiencing. It was Súlimondil's comment about mortals that, quite rightly, upset Glorfindel and the others. I know as a person if I had to watch someone I didn't like very much... or someone I didn't trust might be a better word... go through an experience like that and I realized that they had to re-experience these memories, it would probably make me feel compassion toward them. But then I don't have the background that these elves have with the Noldo elves and I don't have the experience of the Valar, so... :)
I was glad to see that the Valar had found the 10th dimension, not that I had any doubt about that! I'm anxious to see how that plays out in the other story. Looking forward to the next chapters!
Author's reply
Sador doesn't have a flashback per se but he does tell some of the Tol Ereeseans about his Judgment, which he must have remembered at some point, though I do not describe it. But I suspect that this incident is not the first time he's had such a flashback, although I think he's experiencing it more fully because of the charged atmosphere of the tournament.
Manwe is impressive and scary at amy time and I'm sure one or two of the elves actually did go to their knees when he approached. Sometimes a single word is all you need, said int he right tone by the right person, to brings others into line. *grin*
I'm sure that most of the elves in the stands seeing the interchange between Glorfindel and Namo were sympathetic, even Sulimondil. It's just his unfortunate comment concerning mortals that ruined everything. Still, Glorfindel's reaction to the comment didn't help the situation any, though it's understandable why he reacts the way he does, given the memory he is re-experiencing.
How the Valar discover the tenth apatial dimension will be revealed fairly soon, though not in the way most people will suspect. *grin*

· Chapter 120: Interlude with Elflings
Two chapters! Yay! A very nice treat. Having five young ones stand by while you eat would definitely be a punishment for them!
It's a good thing that elves live so long because I think it's going to take a long time for the Aman elves to overcome these prejudices they have against the reborn and the returned elves. I know Lindorillë is just the tip of a very large iceberg and you wonder what she has overheard to make her feel that scared. I doubt her parents where speaking in front of their children about things because her brother doesn't seem unduly afraid. Perhaps she heard things elsewhere. Whatever the source it is not something that will be easily dealt with except over time and being around the reborn and the returned elves and seeing they are just normal people. But things like this will help... it is with small steps that change is made.
Oh, I love the fact that the two youngest elflings already care so much for Finrod and the ellon is worried that he lost. But the older ellyn made me mad when they were calling him a baby. I deal with kids like that fairly often and I don't like it when kids that have sensitive hearts are made fun of for that sensitivity.
Anyway, wonderful chapter as always!
Author's reply
Hi Radbooks! Thanks for reviewing. There's a lot of history to get through with the Elves and they have long memories. The Amanian elves had nearly 600 years to nurse their prejudices against the Exiles and the Reborn. I hope that Lindorillë isn't hearing these things from her parents, but she is getting her ideas from somewhere, perhaps from a source that is unaware of "little pitchers with big ears" listening in. Certainly her brother isn't as upset as she. Hopefully Finrod and Arafinwë between them will bring her around.
I'm glad I got the dynamics of older and younger elflings correct. I'm basing their interactions on my "failing" memories of when I was a lad, plus what I've observed from watching other people's children as I don't have any of my own. Being one of the "sensitive hearts" myself, I well remember the taunts I was forced to endure from other kids who were less sensitive. Not fun.

WOW! What a taut chapter. Our heroes really have a lot to be healed of - don't they.
I love the men that Finrod Felagund fell in love with. I'm glad to see that Glorfindel feels the same way. Extremely difficult - the thought of the sacrifice made... by all, I would say, but my heart was especially torn by the men who gladyly died for their Elven lords. *sobs*
Turin is my favorite character in the Sil - so you can understand my love of this chapter. Hooray for Glorfindel and boo for Sulimondil!
And good grief - they're dropping like flies. The Valar better keep their eyes opened. They may have opened a hornet's nest by encouraging this tournament.
Exquisite chapter - I hate when a chapter is sooooo good - and yours are - that I sit at the end of reading it and wish with all my heart that there was more NOW.........
Thanks!
Author's reply
The Amanian elves who never left for the War of Wrath, not to mention the Noldor who never took part in the Rebellion, and so never met the Edain, must have wondered what all the fuss was about. Glorfindel had little interaction with any of the Edain, except for Húrin, Huor and Tuor, as well as any who might have fought beside the elf during the Nirnaeth, yet it would have been enough for him to see their worth in Eru's eyes and honor them for their courage and their devotion to their Elven lords.
I'm sure the Valar are regretting encouraging the tournament, but they probably realize that not encouraging would have been detrimental to their plans of reconciling the different elven factions. The tournament, which was actually Ingwë's idea, was meant to bring all the various elven peoples together. Whether it will work or not remains to be seen. Certainly the incidents involving the Reborn has put a spanner in the works.
Thanks for reviewing, Agape. I really appreciate you taking the time.

It seemed appropriate that poor Vorondil had trouble accepting his father's 'defeat' - but hopefully, Finrod will help him see the difference between defeat and real victory. Of course, this doesn't mean I'm giving you permission (LOL - the temerity!) of having Finrod or Glorfindel loose.
I am definitely torn - who - who do I want to win... It's like cheering between my own kids! DRAT
Also - loved the elflings - they are so vulnerable - reminded me so much of Glorfindel running off to hide!!!
My goodness - these dear Elves have an uphill battle before them...
Good chapter!
Author's reply
Vorondil is typical of most younglings who can't distinguis between losing with honor and being defeated. They are not the same, of course, but even some adults I know have a problem understanding the difference.
Yes, the elflings are very vulnerable especially as they are also impressible, so what they learn from the adults around them sticks with them into their own adulthood. Hopefully, Finrod, et al, have "caught" these particular elflings, especially the older ones, at the right moment so they can be 'retrained' in their thinking.

You know, meldonya, I'm not sure if I'd want to see Glorfindel really fight... It would be glorious but also rather frightening.
I was glad to see that Vëantur was able to compete in the second round (and not just because it would mean Ingwion couldn't fight if he didn't, honest!). I'm sure that Mithlas is feeling much better about continuing on inthe tournament since he didn't seriously damage his opponent.
Oh, what a time for *that* particular memory to show up! Poor Glorfindel! I'm so very glad Námo was there to stabilise Glorfindel and to keep the Balrog-Slayer from killing Súlimondil for his comment about the Second-born. That one is an ellon with a death wish, I think.
But then again, I don't think Namo would let him through the gates of Mandos--at least not until his little "talk" with Ingwë .
I'm not really surprised at Sador's reaction to his returned memory given what he was doing when it hit. He was in the company of elflings, and had been "in charge" of them. Given that the memory restorations really mess with the elf's ability to distinguish what is in the here and now and what is just being remembered, no wonder he went running off with Veryandur.
And poor Veryandur! He's had a really rough day, hasn't he? I do hope that when Sador wakes up he has the time to talk to the elfling about what happened. I think that if he does, then he's going to find himself the recipient of some hero-worship from the child (You saved a lot of elflings, just like me? You were really *brave*!) And it might give Sador some comfort to be able to reassure Veryandur about the matter.
I wanted to give both Arafinwë and Eärwen hugs. I hope they don't continue to feel guilty about making mistakes with Finrod when he was first Reborn. After all, the Reborn don't come with an instruction manual any more than babies do!
I laughed at the mental image of Alassiel sitting there watching Region muttering away to herself. It reminded me of when I watch other ballroom dancers at competition .
The meeting in the tenth dimensional space flashed me back to the discussions between Aulë and Ulmo in your other story "Wars of the Valar." So they did manage to locate it after all!
Things are continuing to be interesting and it's only the first day of the tournament! I hope my heart can stand the excitement of the upcoming events!
I'm definitely ooking forward to the next installment. I hope you have a good week and your classes are going well. Hugs!
Author's reply
When Glorfindel fights for real, it will indeed be a sight to behold.
Memories are tricky and there's no rhyme or reason as to when they appear or what triggers them. You wouldn't think that something as harmless as tickling Glorfindel would trigger such a dire memory, but the hröa holds its own memory that differs from that of the fëa. It's possible that Glorfindel is merely suffering from a delayed reaction from fighting earlier that day.
At any rate, it is fortunate that Námo was there to help him through it and to stop him from doing something stupid where Súlimondil is concerned. That particular ellon is worth it.
I think it would be natural for Alassiel to watch another female fighting, knowing that perhaps someday she too will be in a similar list doing the same thing. See Region wield a sword so competently would hopefully inspire her to continue her own sword lessons and do the best she can under Finrod's tutelage.
Yes, the tenth spatial dimension was eventually discovered (did you ever doubt it? *grin*) but not in the way you might think. Sorry... no other hints will I give, you'll just have to wait and see.
Thanks for reviewing. I'm glad you're still enjoying the story.

Hello, meldonya!
I really enjoyed this chapter. I truly love seeing Finrod interact with elflings because he's such a loving soul. He's so understanding!
Poor Vorondil, he certainly has a lot to learn, doesn't he? All those incorrect preconceptions that he has to unlearn and replace with correct information. Though I can understand his misconception about what is exactly going on in the tournament, having seen the children of several SCA fighters struggle with the same idea that when Daddy loses a bout it doesn't mean he failed. Of course, the youth combat (aka boffer combat) marshals spend a lot of time making it clear to the kids that if they lose they haven't failed so long as they did their best and were honorable. I'll have to email you and describe how Sir Ix explained about winning and losing graciously to a dozen under-twelves at youth tournament that I was listmistress for. It was charming ot see how serious these 6 to 12 year-olds were about it. I saw a lot of chivalrous acts among those children that day.
The little scene between Veryandur and Finrod was wonderful. And I can just see the elflings standing and fidgeting while the grownups eat. It reminds me of hte little crew I had who volunteered to help serve a feast. I was Hall Steward and made sure that the kids got to eat till they were bursting before the feast itself started. I'll have to find the pic of my little feast servers and do a manip giving them pointed ears and send it to you.
I was glad to find that Irmo had praise for Vorondil's progress as an apprentice, especially after he had to scold him last chapter (that was the last chapter wasn't it?).
I knew that it would take more than that one conversation between Finrod and Lindorillë to make her believe that Finrod (or any of his household) wouldn't do anything dishonorable to to her. I'd like to wring her parents' necks, actually. It's sad that the elleth can't trust her liegelord. But she is only an elfling after all and doesn't understand that the oath between her and Finrod protects her. He's honorable and would never violate his responsibility to see her kept safe and honoured. Of course, that doesn't mean he won't teach her humility but that won't include hurting her. I hope she learns to trust him soon.
I'd have liked to have been a fly on the wall of the pavilion so I could hear the dissection of hte morning's battles (I admit it I'm a tournament and Court junkie).
The image of the children following Finrod like a gaggle of goslings after their parent just made me smile. A most excellent chapter!
Author's reply
Hi Edlyn! I'd be interested in seeing the pics of the "elfling" servers *grin* and reading about Sir Ix's explanation about winning and losing graciously.
It's probably difficult for many of the younger elves who never saw service in the War of Wrath to understand that what is going on in the tournament is not a life-and-death situation, so that losing a match is not the same as losing one's life (not that there is anything dishonorable about that, either), so Finrod's elfling's and Vorondil are reacting the way they do. I'm sure even some of the adult elves among the Amanians are also finding the tournament a bit unsettling, which is why some of them stayed away during the afternoon's matches.
Lindorillë, for some reason, has absorbed the more negative objections the Amanians have against the Nolodorin Exiles, more so than her brother or cousin, and it will take some time for Finrod to gain her trust, but he's very patient (dealing with Glorfindel has taught him how to be patient *grin*) and eventually he'll win her over.
Thanks for reviewing.

· Chapter 121: Fateful Memories
Ah -- the elusive tenth spatial dimension (it’s a crossover fic!). [I can understand why they haven’t (as of ch. 8) found it yet: they haven’t *needed* it yet.]
Poor Veryandur is having an emotional day.... (He’s reminding me of Glorfindel: the elfling everything happens to.)
Fifty Reborn attending -- I hadn’t expected anywhere near that many. Did they all come from Tol Eressëa? I hadn’t realized that large numbers of the Noldor/Tol Eressëans had come as spectators.
“I admit I did not foresee the possibility of a tournament being a source of trouble where the Reborn are concerned." "Nor I," Námo admitted ruefully. "This will not make it easier for the other elves to be accepting of them." -- I’d wondered if there might not be a problem with one of them having a flashback during his match (presumably Haldir as he’s the most recently Reborn, or even the once-born Mithlas, given his problems in Lórien), but hadn’t thought of this being a problem for *onlookers.* Well, better an onlooker or two than somebody with a sword in his hand....
None of the matches were expected to last long and indeed the crowd was thinner than it had been that morning as many of the Vanyar from the city decided that the afternoon’s fighting would not prove very interesting -- That sounds like a hint that the other three matches (after Finrod’s quick one) will be unusual or particularly exciting, and the missing spectators will regret having stayed home after lunch.
I enjoyed Alassiel watching Region’s match and muttering.
At the end of the chapter, Námo’s in three places/times at once. That doesn’t surprise me -- we’ve seen various Valar having two conversations at once -- but it does make me wonder *how many* things they can do at once (does it vary from Vala to Vala?). At what point does something go wrong -- and what sort of problem would it be?
Author's reply
We will see in later chapters who of the Reborn, if any, are affected by flashbacks because of the tournament. I think it won't be so much the fighting that will prove interesting as what is happening in the stands with Glorfindel and Sador. There are more Reborn being released every day. Many are now reside in Tol Eressëa, others are Teleri (victims of the Kinslaying) and there are alos Noldor who are now being released, but who is being released and when is what has many Amanians wondering what is going on. To their way of thinking, those who were guilty of rebelling against the Valar should not be released until those who died innocently, but, of course, that is not how it works, thus the tension between Amanian elves and the Reborn.
I'm not sure what the limit is on a Vala for bilocation but I decided not to press my luck beyond what Námo does in this chapter. *grin* Yes, they did indeed find the 10th spatial dimension and the story of how it was found will be in Wars of the Valar.

· Chapter 121: Fateful Memories
Of course, Ingwë has witnessed Glorfindel sparring often enough to know he didn’t truly fight in earnest. The finale will be a fight to remember, no doubt.
Poor Glorfindel and Sador, that was not the best moment to relive the memories of these battles. I hadn’t thought of it before, but in hindsight it is probably to be expected that some of the Reborn react in a similar way to the fighting, even if the blood and stench of a true battle is absent. Well, if even the Valar didn’t anticipate it, why should I? It is good that even they don't know everything.
As for this arrogant Súlimondil, I hope you’ll allow us to witness how Ingwë puts him in his place. How *dare* he to say that about mortals?
Author's reply
The finale should be spectacular on many levels, but I refuse to give away the ending this early in the game. *grin*
The Valar, by their own admission, do not know everything, else they wouldn't have been taken by surprise by Fëanor and the Noldorin Rebellion. So, it stands to reason that they might not anticipate what effect the tournament might have on the Reborn, especially former warriors.
Súlimondil, unfortunately, represents those Amanian elves who never came into contact with the Edain, especially during the War of Wrath, and so have very little to no information on which to base an opinion about the Secondborn and their worth in Eru's eyes (and the Valar). For most, the only "mortal" they've ever met has been Eärendil, who is a special case and really can't be considered a good example.
It is doubtful that even Ingwë will be able to put Súlimondil in his place, but we will see.

· Chapter 120: Interlude with Elflings
Regardless of what Oromendil and Sorondil think, *I* was touched that Veryandur was so upset that Finrod could lose. He’s a sweet elfling.
Don’t know what to say about Lindorillë. One truly wonders how much of this nonsense she heard over time to react with so much panic. She certainly has a lot to learn about the Reborn and Tol Eressëans! Well, one year is hopefully enough for her to learn enough ...
And Eruanna seems to do what we in Germany call „to ask someone holes in the belly“ ;-)
Hm, I shouldn’t read other people’s reviews. Now I can’t get rid of the image of Finrod walking through the encampment, elflings trailing behind, like a mother hen with chickens *grin*
Author's reply
Well, the image of Finrod walking through the encampment, elflings trailing behind, like a mother hen with chicks was too good to pass up. *grin* He is gathering himself quite an entourage, and a very odd mix of one, though mostly, if you notice, they are elflings (or act like one).
The elves of Aman had centuries in which to hone their hatred for the Exiles, especially as no word ever came to them from Middle-earth so they only had their own imaginations to fall back on. I'm sure that there was a great deal of resentment against the Returnees as well. Lindorillë and the other older elflings have grown up in a climate of mistrust and misinformation about the Exiles and what they did (or didn't do). One year may not be enough for her to relearn things, but hopefully it will be a start. And who knows what will happen in that year?

· Chapter 120: Interlude with Elflings
Yay! Two chapters!
So who is the leader of the tinca team? Plenty of lords....
Lunch cooked by elflings the equivalent of ten- and twelve-year-olds: Lumpy sandwiches with way too much mayo, and badly-butchered crudités (worse than mine, even). Mixed salads that haven’t really been mixed, doused with dressing that suffered when the bottle of herbs was upset into it.... Yes, I know Sador and Alassiel are there too. But I still keep seeing the sandwiches. (However, there are pastries from the bake shop in town, and Alassiel made a very successful pudding.)
Five elflings trailing behind Finrod and Glorfindel like so many chicks -- LOL!
Author's reply
Glorfindel would, by acclamation if nothing else, be considered the leader of the the tinco-list, but he is also the leader by right of the fact that, like Finrod, he is the highest ranking warrior among the tinco-fighters.
I'm sure that Sador only let the elflings think they were making lunch and he and Alassiel did most of the cooking, etc. themselves. *grin*
Oh I just loved Námo in this chapter. Of course, I've become quite attached to him throughout all your stories. I had someone tell me recently that my infatuation with the Lord of Mandos was somewhat...disturbing. *grin* But I'm convinced beneath that imposing exterior lurks the softest heart. And I love seeing different facets of him glimmering in the light from time to time.
I am curious about the Reborn and their memories returning, but not overly concerned. (Should I be concerned? *looks anxious*) I really enjoy how you make it clear that the Valar are not all knowing and can be quite baffled sometimes. I also love their slipping away for conversations that take fractions of a second. And it was nice to see they really did find that 10th spacial dimension they were looking for in Wars. *grin*
I'm hoping my Glorfindel will be feeling better next chapter. I'm glad Finrod won his round. (was there ever any doubt?) And I would love to see an interaction between those elflings and the Lord of Mandos. NO! Do NOT kill them! LOL!
Thank you again, Fiondil, for this lovely treat of two chapters. I now feel much more rested and am in much better humour. And that should transfer over to a more enjoyable day at the Renaissance Festival tomorrow where the sword fighting will mean so much more. *grin*
As always, I can hardly wait for more, but the wait is always worth it.
NiRi
Author's reply
I don't think it's strange being interested in Lord Námo... after all, he's one of the most fascinating characters in Tolkien's Cast of Thousands.
The memories being triggered by the fighting may or may not be a concern, but certainly the Valar are taking them seriously and are taking steps to ensure that the Reborn do not suffer too much from the emotional trauma such memories will bring about. The Valar don't know everything, though they can make pretty shrewd guesses, but where the Reborn are concerned they are as much in the dark as the rest of them, Námo included.
And yes, they do indeed find the 10th dimension and the story of how that happened will be forthoming in Wars of the Valar.
I promise not to kill the elflings just so they can interact with the Lord of Mandos. *grin* Such an interaction, if it occurs, will be because they happen to be in the same room with one of the adult elves, like Finrod, who do interact with him and not because they've died.
Glad you are feeling much better. Thanks for reviewing.

· Chapter 120: Interlude with Elflings
Oh goody! A double dose of EI! *grabs Fiondil and hugs him tightly* How did you know I needed it? Hmm? Oh, sorry. *releases Fiondil so he can breathe* You must forgive my exuberance. I've been holed up just me, a warg and a house all week. And dust. Packing is such a pain! And I'm not even moving yet! So, dull week, no contact with people, and then two chapters from you? *bounces happily* You made my day!
This was a sweet chapter. I love watching Finrod interact with the elflings. And Glorfindel's smugness is pretty cute too. I'm hoping Lindorillë will come around soon. But seeing how Vorondil was transformed, I'm sure the others shall be too. I'm glad the kiddies will be allowed to watch the next round! I wanna go too! *waves green banner with golden rayed sun* Wait. He's not fighting again yet, is he? Ok, I'll cheer for Finrod then.
I caught a typo! "The two older ellyn looked concerned but not frighten, " I think that should be frightened.
Great chapter, Fiondil! I'm rushing off to the next now.
NiRi
Author's reply
Thanks NiRi. I'm glad I was able to brighten an otherwise dull week for you. Packing is indeed a pain, especially when you're stuck doing it all by yourself. Been there and done that.
I'm sure Lindorillë will indeed come around as she see's Finrod interacting with the other elflings and herself and see that she has nothing to worry about. And when they get to Tirion and start their training there, things will be even better, so that by Midsummer when the three older elflings will transfer to Lórien, she will feel more comfortable around Finrod and the other Noldor.
Thanks for pointing out the typo. I've made the correction.

Wow! You updated TWO this time! Its been awhile since you have. I do hope you do that more often. *Hint, hint* The elflings are so adorable. Eruanna and Veryandur especially.
I am so glad that Finrod won his match! Did Ingwion win his? So I am taking it that the next chapter will be on the tinco-list matches. Will Finrod have a suprise memory event? Will it be about the time he left on the rebellion? It sure would be cool if you wrote a story about Finrod's experience on leaving Mandos before Glorifndel was released!? *Another hint, hint*
Wonderful. That about sums it up.
Author's reply
Glad you liked the chapters. We'll find out in the next chapter how Ingwion fared in his match against Vëantur. As for the rest... only time will tell what will happen.
