Yes--so right that Pippin's hands should lead the celebration--the hands of one of the heroes of Bywater and those of the next Thain, as well as one of the King's Companions.
Author's reply
Well said, Larner, and thank you for reading and commenting :) Yes, Pippin needed to learn to lead, both in hard times and happy ones, and he did on the Quest.

So right that the Gaffer should feel proud and joyful at this new turn of events. So very right. His Sam, the hero of the age, just like out of one of them storybooks.
Yes, I can certainly see this. And Old Hamfast hiding the fact he hears more than they realize. Wily old bird.
Author's reply
Thank you :) Yes, I think the Gaffer would be like a good friend of mine - liking to seem tough and crotchety but a good soul within. He would have great fun pulling such a thing.

Hooray! What a bumptious day for Berilac, seeing his beloved distant cousin and friend freed from the Lockholes! Lovely description of the whole situation!
Author's reply
Thank you, Larner, for the response and the new word for my volcabulary :) Bumptious!! I'll have to remember that one :)
Yes, for some reason I made those two close friends in "While We Dwelt in Fear" and Marigold (who must have a computer file somewhere with all of these little notes on things) gave me Berilac as my character for this. I'm glad you liked it :)
I simply have to request more fiction from you more often! I dearly love this and I am so glad that you posted it here so that everyone can enjoy it! I love the hesitation and nervousness that Pippin experiences before playing again. I also found myself wondering who had brought the fiddle to the Green Dragon for him, thus encouraging him to play again. Let's face it, I just loved everything about this one. I consider it the perfect after-symphony story and I thank you again for writing it!
Author's reply
You, m'dear GW, are most welcome. :)
I read your wee wish for reading material and this popped into my head. I think both because of the symphony and because you had been so eager to hear me play; then I couldn't be there - though I'm no Pippin I assure you. LOL
I'm so glad you like it!

But pride quickly warmed him. His son was leading hobbits of Bywater to gain back Bag End. To gain back Mr. Frodo’s home. And his home. And the Shire.
Pride in our children is a wonderful thing and to earn the pride of our parents is a prize above all telling.
Author's reply
That is so true! Thank you for reading, harrowcat, and I'm glad you liked it :)

Then the notes flowed. A year and more of homesickness and his hobbit heart’s love of the Shire echoed in every tone. Pippin’s music filled the heart of every hobbit in the Green Dragon on the old inn’s first night back in business.
And in the heart of every one of us who enjoy the stories on this site!
Author's reply
Thank you, harrowcat! That's an incredible compliment *blushing*

I truly do love this tale! Pippin reflecting on the Journey he--and his hands took. From childhood, through danger and toils, and then back again...ready to use them to make music with his fiddle. Awesome. :-)
Thank you for these wonderful pearls!

“First ya be needin’ watched o’re nigh all the time and takin’ lots o’ naps.” his voice said in his

I just love that line! I love your Gaffer, too. Another excellent story!

Most beautiful, Pearl! Music and song have always been the universal language, and I love it. I LOVE the idea of Pippin and Cullassisul making music together, singing unspoken words that come directly from the heart. I loved listening to them. Nothing else needs to be said. Beautiful. :-)

I always love it when you mention Cullassisul in one of your tales. I'm rather attached to the particular OC of yours. This was lovely. I enjoyed the way that Pippin and the young elf managed to speak to one another. Another wonderful story!

aw, thank you so very much, GW! I still often wonder if she came across well, so this is so good to hear :) You've done my heart good, thank you :) :)

I love the image that came to me of Galadriel as a kind of benevolent, all-seeing nanny overlooking the Wood and its environs.
And trust Pippin to find singing a way to communicate with someone whose language he does not share. Very touching.
Author's reply
Thank you Bodkin :)
Yes, Galadriel keeps a good watch over her lands :) I do think that at least the Pippin most of us now have in our heads, due in large part to Billy, might think to sing when he doesn't have words to say. :)
thank you so much :) :)

I really enjoyed this, Pearl! I love how they manage to communicate through music, and how Galadriel sees a bit of Elvishness in Pippin, and how Pippin sometimes can understand the Elves more than he thinks he should. So much to love here!
Author's reply
Thank you, ST :)
Tolkien makes much of the "differentness" of Frodo, but he also mentions that the Tooks as a whole are unusual, it being part of why he chooses Bilbo to be a burgler. I've had fun exploring that aspect of Tookishness :)

This is so beautiful! I love that Pippin expresses himself with music, when he can think of nothing to say, and that she responds.
And I love the way Galadriel is watching over her guests, helping them to recover from their weariness and grief. This is just lovely beyond words!!
Author's reply
Thank you, Dreamflower :) I just felt it was something she would do. She comes across as a caring person despite being somewhat scarey.

What a lovely encounter! I like the way music transcends the language barrier.
Have you published a story where Pippin meets his ancestress? I'd like to read it!
(A little technical note: the author's note about Cullassisul--at the bottom of the page--seems to be incomplete.)
Author's reply
Thank you, Lindelea :)
The story of their meetings are mostly in "While We Dwelt in Fear", including the meeting mentioned in this story which is in chapter 18.
I had trouble posting this, had to have help doing it, and I can't seem to fix the problem with the Author's Note. Thanks for pointing it out though :)

Yes, a treasure from one treasure to the other as they work at forging a life together, there in Number 3. Lovely, lovely! And Ham is halfway to a delightful end to a cold and slippery day.
Author's reply
Thank you very much, Larner :) The first birthday gift I got from husband after we were married was a set of matched crochet hooks in a carrying case. It meant a lot, not just because it was for my first birthday as his wife but because it showed he appreciated my crocheting. I still have the complete set :)

· Chapter 7: "A Misanthropic-Philanthropic Yule"
I'll bet all those calming adults were worried silly by the time Paladin and Pearl actually did turn up. But they will be so proud of them - even Pippin understood the absence of presents. He's a little monkey, but as kind-hearted as they come.
And I suspect that the poor families might find that certain gentlehobbits make an effort after Yule to see that they start the New Year in a better way than they ended the Old.
I love the closeness and affection between Pippin and his dad, too.
Author's reply
Aw, thank you so much Bodkin :) Yes I like keeping in mind that Saradoc becomes "Scattergold" and I've always felt the family of Paladin Took would be genreous as the Pippin of the Quest is a caring, fairly unspoilt young hobbit.
Thank You!

Oh, how sweet! This was lovely - there aren't many fics about young Hamfast and Bell, but they must have been sweet together, because they produced six children, including the wonderful Sam. It was nice to see Ham being affectionate and not grumpy! He's a very observant hobbit to pick up on what Bell was looking at.
Author's reply
Thank you, BB :) I've always figured the Gaffer for one of those males that hides that he's sensitive behind being gruff. His fellow hobbits like and respect him and they wouldn't if he were really as mean as his grumpiness seems :)
I glad you like the story and thank you for responding :)
