Whoa! I really didn't see that coming! But what is going to happen? Oh, Antane, what's going to happen? This is the worst of the worst cliff-hangers!!!!!!!! I'll never sleep tonight! Oh, you must post just as soon as you can! Frodo is not going to die, I know he isn't going to die, but what's going to happen with Smeagol and the Ring and...and...everything? What's going to happen to Faramir? You have me so frantic I don't know what to do! God bless,

Oh, poor, dear Frodo! This is worse than before...which might be expected, I suppose. He must not fail, he must come through! I can hardly believe the journey is almost over! He'll soon be all right. You know, for some reason I like how Sam just silently picks him up. There's something beautiful about that which I can't quite put into words. Oh, I can't wait till the next chapter! Sam isn't being a ninnyhammer. It is often the smallest of things that will tip the balance when very stressed. But I am glad that this idea of duplication of articles doesn't apply to people as well in your AU. We might like two Frodos or Sams but not two Gollums, Saurons or Orcs.

Another sweet chapter! I really liked this part when Sam was trying to comb though Frodo's tangled curls. Very touching. They are gettin' closer and closer to Mt.Doom! It's almost the end.... for the Ring, that is.

· Chapter 38: Struggling On
Wow! What a beautiful chapter, Antane! We're in the mood with our characters, aren't we? The nearer they get to the mountain, the faster we must go! But I'm glad of it! It's funny, even in the heart of Mordor, I feel like there's more hope than when they were sailing down Anduin, or in the Emyn Muil, or to cut it short, anywhere else. Does that make any sense? I suppose it's the ever-so-gentle teasing, and the little touches like Sam trying to take care of things that wouldn't matter to anyone else, like combing Frodo's curls. A very sweet touch! God bless,
Galadriel

Wow, Antane. I have been loving this so far. You were right. It got better. I am so very grateful that you put in this last chapter a bit of Frodo and Sam teasing. It gives the reader a wee bit of hope. And, uh, I'll let it get a little worse again before the ending, for Sam was right. It hasn't come to the most exciting part yet. And I expect, ahem, that it WILL indeed turn out alright. Right, Antane? ;) Namarie, mellon nin!! God bless, Frodo Baggins

And, how far is Faramir going with Frodo and Sam? All the way? Wonder what's going on with the others...

Antane, that's just...just...I won't even say what, because it would probably mean screaming so loudly that you'll hear it...literally! There had better be more as soon as possible, and I mean it! Okay, I'll forgive you, since I love cliff-hangers too...*when* I'm the one writing them! :-) You know, up till the chapter with Shelob I didn't give it a thought, but I have the dreadful feeling that I know why you let Boromir go, that Faramir is going to...No! He can't! What about Eowyn? The story won't have nearly the happy ending if Faramir...if Faramir dies! But it begins to look inevitable, and something tells me that there will be a farewell in the next chapter. More, more, more!!!! God bless,

· Chapter 34: Touched by Darkness, Surrounded by Light
I don't blame Sam trying to keep the Ring from his master cause I would have done the same thing. BUT, it probably wasn't the BEST thing to do because of the toll the Ring was taking on Frodo this time. The Ring is trying harder this time to take control of Frodo and Frodo is just so tired of this whole ordeal.
As for your question, I think that Frodo DID have some amount of free will left, but the Ring probably overpowered his will, making him give in. After all, they are in the very heart of Mordor. Frodo is not weak, that's not what I'm saying, but the Ring's power had taken almost total control over Frodo's will, but (like I said) Frodo did still have some free will even inside Mt. Doom.
Anyway, lovely chapter. Love every bit of it. :D
Author's reply
Thanks for your thoughts on Frodo and free will. Queen Galadriel didn't think Sam should have tried to keep the Ring either, my reply to that is under her review.
Thanks also for all your other kind reviews! I am so glad you are enjoying!

· Chapter 34: Touched by Darkness, Surrounded by Light
Let Sam not be offended, but I honestly don't think he should have tried to persuade Frodo to allow him to bear the burden for a while. It was unsuccessful last time, he knew it would do more harm than good. I know it was out of love, but anger can be exhausting, and Frodo needs every ounce of strength. But Sam is the very escence of love, and I think I could forgive him anything... especially since he meant only good, as always. And if he hadn't come when he did...*shudder* it doesn't bear thinking about! As for your question, I don't think Frodo had any part of the Ring's claim on him. He was just so tired...so tired, and the Ring had been slowly but surely draining every ounce of strength and resistance he possessed for months. I think at that point, when he reached the place where it was forged, it was at the height of its strength and he at the height of his weakness, and he was at last enslaved. But I'm just as new as you, so you might want to ask the experts. Another great chapter! Namarie, and God bless,
Galadriel
Author's reply
Re: Sam trying to keep the Ring - well, I think he was a bit stressed out at that point from everything, he's just sick that he had to choose the thing he most hates over the person he most loves and he sees how the Ring is tearing Frodo apart again and would want his dear one to have some relief from that, even if he knows it's hopeless and he shouldn't even try but it's not easy just to watch someone you love that deeply just fall apart without trying to do everything in your power to help them. Perhaps the Ring itself was also influencing him. I don't see how they would have yelled each other like that without it, these two who are so close they share the same heart and soul.
Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Oh! This is....I mean....it's....oh, Frodo!! Actually, this time is much more dramatic than last time, which, is better for me, but poor Frodo!! Oh, but ANtane, Frodo is wrong, don't you see? My dear, dear Antane,
Of course I will speak to you again!! These last few chapters have been absolutely wonderful!!! Um, to answer your question, I don't think Frodo was ever completely one hundred percent consumed by the Ring. And, he better not be this time!! I would think that Frodo would still have a voice inside him, resisting the Power of the Ring, even if the power was so strong as to make his hands claim it. He more than likely still had a tiny voice still crying out to try and stop that terrible power. That's my opinion, and I don't know if it's any good, but there it is anyway. Keep on writing!! It just keeps getting worse for Frodo and Sam but better for the reader because I know that it will turn out alright....ahem, ahem. (RIGHT, Antane? ;) Namarie, and God bless!!

*sobs* Oh, oh, I don't know what to say! I really don't...except, thank you, for the joy of seeing some of my own little "lines that rhyme" as I call them put to such a wonderful, beautiful use! And Tolkien's song is so very lovely, and of course much better than mine. How then did you make them flow so well? Is that all of it, or is there more? If there is, could you send it to me, please? I think I'm being inspired. My muse evidently *is* exhausted, but I begin to feel the slowly growing glow that will soon become a burning desire to write more. God bless,
