I can just see Pippin planning this all the way from Rivendell! And I'm glad he wasn't distracted by the shock of the Ruffians - it frames his adventure perfectly.
Author's reply
It makes a nice bookend with the earlier drabble. I write Pippin as so distractable that a little distraction is no bother at all...

Oh, Bless HIM! And the handkerchief comes home again!
And it's April 8. Will come down once I'm done with my last client, and stay through the thirteenth. 57 that day. Seems like yesterday Meesh and I and her guide dog Whisper were wandering the campus of our college during our senior year, or I was playing tug of war with Whisper in the hallways.
Her cancer checks remain clear, for which I'm deeply grateful.
Author's reply
Oh, that's good to hear.
Will circle that date on the calendar. Have choir rehearsal that evening, but there has to be at least one day in that stretch we can get together.
Whisper, what a perfect name. Our guide dog puppies have always been super quiet--almost unnaturally so, and I wonder if somehow it's bred into them.

Certainly. It's a little tattered, and perhaps a little damp, but eminently serviceable.

I went and read "Pervinca's Gift". This is a marvelous follow-up.
". . .a tattered scrap of cloth, initials still visible. I’ve got just the thing..."
MEWD!!
Author's reply
Wasn't "Pervinca's Gift" a perfect jumping off place? It just begged for a followup.
Thanks!

*grins* This is sweet! Only a Hobbit would count that being spoiled. :) I'm the eldest of four, and seeing that all three younger ones are all right, not watching, saying, or doing something they shouldn't when the parents aren't around is a trial. I can't imagine what it would be like with thirteen children or twelve younger siblings!
God bless,
Galadriel
Author's reply
LOL! Well, I figure once they figured out where all the children were coming from, and yet didn't stop, that they must have enjoyed children and looked forward to more!
Thanks!

‘All’s well, lad. We’ll be in good time.’
Wow! So much said in only 100 words!
A comforting dream turned into a nightmare, but the nightmare didn't end after Sam woke up. Still, he was there, in good time, to see and help to end it!
Thank you!
Author's reply
You know, your highlighting that part made me think twice. Yes, Bilbo might've been talking about a dreamed burial, but there also might have been, in the back of Sam's mind, some sort of reference to the ending of the Quest.
I hadn't written that meaning into Bilbo's words, but I can certainly see it there.
Thanks!

Possibly Sam needed this moment in the Shire to fortify him for what was ahead. I wouldn't be surprised. Grounding him in the green of home, with his mentors pushing him on for the final effort.
Author's reply
Good point, I hadn't thought of that. A few moments (seconds, even) back in the Shire, in a *garden*, a place of strength for Sam (and also the source of his greatest temptation), might be fortifying, indeed. Nicely put.

Beautiful! You capture that whole feeling of a nightmare, the trapped feeling in which that which makes no sense is simply understood.
Then he wakes to a reality just as bad! Poor Sam!
Author's reply
It always bemuses me, the way dreams seem so real, and make perfect sense (at the time), and then after I wake up I realize that of course (for instance) two houses on opposite sides of the country cannot be next door to each other.

· Chapter 29: On the Slopes of Mount Doom
Oh, indeed--from nightmare into nightmare! And what nightmares--Frodo's death as a youngling in old Mr. Bilbo's care to Frodo struggling with Gollum, then lying, bleeding and probably dying indeed, as both look to be doing anyway as Mount Doom tears itself apart in the aftermath of the destruction of the Ring!
A wonderful work, Lindelea!
Author's reply
Yes, indeed, nightmares! What a relief it must have been, though, to see Frodo freed at last, even if they anticipated death following shortly after.

Wow! From nightmare into nightmare. Nothing could keep Sam away from his duty for long, could it. Powerful little punch of imagery. I see it has been a month since I reviewed anything new of yours. Real Life must have been getting in the way again? Best Wishes to you!

Yes, combination of Real Life and the Muse taking an extended holiday. Think good thoughts... perhaps she'll return and take up one of the languishing tales once more.

So lovely to see "what happened next!" Merry is trying to make things up to Pippin. It is amazing to me how a Brandybuck who is so confident in a boat, and who faced down Orcs and The Witch King can be nervous about being up on a roof. It was such a lovely idea to link the two together. I very much enjoyed both.
Author's reply
Yes! I wonder if JRRT intended Brandybucks to be worried about heights. I will have to re-read the bit in Lorien to see what the various hobbits' reactions were, once more...

· Chapter 27: Sam and the Baker's Dozen
Rugby union needs fifteen. Perhaps they'd better have a few spares ...
So hobbits are superstitious about thirteen, too?
Rosie and Sam are very intrepid. More than ... three or so ... requires a special level of nerve. And a very good memory - or you'd never be able to fit the right name to the right child.
Author's reply
Hmmm. Maybe that's what they were after. After all, with Mum and Dad counted in, Tolman makes fifteen...
We have only three and still have trouble fitting names.

Aw! This is sweet :-) But they did just have their "Baker's Dozen". I think you have a plot bunny here . . .
Author's reply
They did, although I'd read that there was for a time a 14th named Lily (or Lilly?) in one of the draft genealogies.
I did write Rosie's pregnancy with Tolman as a "surprise" when both she and Sam thought she was "past it"... Amazing how JRRT set Tolman's birth in the year that Sam, Rose and Elanor travelled to Gondor. I wonder if he had a plot bunny nibbling at his ankles?
