I really enjoyed reading this story and was so pleased to see it updated. "Lost" is one of my favorite stories and I am eagerly awaiting more on this one. Welcome back!

Liz · 28 September 2007 · Chapter 8: Bitter Memory, Part I

I got your reply and ran right over here! I'm so glad I didn't wait till the 7th to bother you! Seriously? You have just made my day! (Hopefully not my year) :-) I was SO excited to see the update!! I think I savored every single word. And I knew it was shorter than your other chapters, so as every paragraph drew to a close I was just really, really hoping it wouldn't be the last. But alas, eventually it was... The story of the boar hunt and Elladan being an a** was just so interesting. What is so amazing about your writing is not only the incredible plots that you come up with, but the way you phrase things, it just builds up the angst perfectly! By the time we get to that climactic moment where the character's guilt sets in, I'm just left with chills- and I love that feeling. If all fanfictions were rollercoasters, yours would be the highest- with the steepest drop. Not many can pull off that kind of angsty build-up. So I really, really, really hope you update soon. I've never stopped being fully hooked in this story, but now that I've gotten an update, I'm bouncing with anticipation for more. I can't wait to read what happened with the boar hunt and how/if the twins made up... And of course, who that figure was... Did it have anything to do with the dog?

Liz · 25 September 2007 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

Hi! It's me again. I was going to wait until October 7, so that I could make it an annual review (October 7th was the date of my last begging review). But alas, the last two weeks were just too hard for me to wait! I just thought I'd let you know that even though I've now moved on to reading other genres of fanfiction and Elladan and Elrohir no longer captivate my daydreams, I'm still VERY eagerly awaiting the end, middle, any part, of this story. I absolutely LOVE your writing. It's some of the best I have EVER read and that includes published books and novels and such. I know you've been busy and you've been away for long bouts of time, but it would just make me exstatic if you could post something...anything. Maybe if you post a little bit and get lots of new feedback, and begin to reread the last stuff that you wrote, your muse will come on full force and you'll be able to bang out the rest of this story and it will no longer be hanging over your head. Or maybe it's just that I'll no longer be hanging over your head. :-P I have been good though, right? I've only bothered you once a year so far... Please! Please, please, please, please update! Please? I'll continue this and make it my fall tradition for the rest of my life if I have to. I really want to know what happens next. I really want to know what's wrong with Elrohir. I want to know who will find him. I want to know what changes Estel's mind about Elrohir's bravery. You're the only one who can answer those questions for me. And I really, really, really want to know. Please?

Author's reply

Hi Liz, Well, great minds think alike, I guess, because I'd already broken up my chapter into three parts a couple of weeks ago and decided I'd post it like that. Your note spurred me on to getting the darn thing posted today, though, so thanks for the little push! And of course, thanks so much for your very nice comments. I don't feel I deserve them at the moment after letting my story go for so long, but nonetheless they were lovely to read! Okay, now I've posted the first part...let's see if that lures a muse back in.... FM

Idril Celebrindal · 12 April 2007 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

Firstmate, Really enjoying this story! Hope you get the opportunity to update it. I am looking forward to the "lightbulb" going off in Estel's head. Idril

Author's reply

Hey Idril, Looks like I'm finally getting off the dime and updating. No lightbulb for Estel yet. Won't happen in this chapter at all, in fact, but it does eventually. Thanks for your note! FM

Jane · 17 January 2007 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

Hello, With the lack of updates (over a year now since the last one) I decided to re-read the entire library from FirstMate, It just made me want a new chapter even more!! But it's good to know that the story was not abandoned. -Yeah I'm a patient person :-) Janie.

Author's reply

Hi Janie, Well, it's good that you're patient, because in my case it's REALLY been needed. I've just posted a new update to get things rolling again. Thanks SO much for hanging in there with me! FM

Mandy · 2 January 2007 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

Hello. I just wanted to check if this story was dead or if you might finish it some day. I really enjoyed "Lost" and was saving this one till it was finished (I prefer to read stories after all the chapters have been posted). Thanks, Mandy.

Author's reply

Hi Mandy, Yes, I realize it's been quite awhile since you sent your note--you're probably going "huh...who is this writing me?", but I am playing catch-up here with responses. To answer your question, no, the story isn't dead and I am still trying to finish it. Just decided to post my inexplicably-impossible-to-write latest chapter in 3 parts in order to get things moving again. The story is only going to be 9 or 10 chapters long, so it actually is close to being finished (assuming I can lure my muse back!) FM

Jane · 9 October 2006 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

Hello, I have to agree- I was hoping that by me Nominating this story on the MPA 2006 Awards in the 'MIA'(missing in action)Category ,it might jump start an update... Please, Please Update soon... Jane

Author's reply

Hi Jane. That was so nice of you to nominate my little story. I do sincerely appreciate it and yes, having someone take an interest in it does spur on my determination to work on it. As I explained in my response to Liz, I just don't have a lot of time right now and have a hard time writing. Heck...I don't even have time to READ anymore...how sad is that?! Anyway, I'm continuing to SLLOOOWWWLLYYY work on the next chapter. Your little nudges do help a lot, though, so thank you so much! FM

Liz · 7 October 2006 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

Hey...um, so I've been waiting patiently for like, 11 months now and I was just wondering if you could persuaded to update soon? Please? Seriously, I've been waiting here all this time to hear the new tale and watch Elrohir get rescued from where Estel left him. I know real life gets in the way, but just one itty bitty update? Please! Ahem...sorry, but I really do LOVE your stories and I don't want this one to stay unfinished forever...

Author's reply

Uhm...hi! I am SO sorry to have left the story hanging for so long. I really hate it when writers do that and here I've done it myself. I never, not in a million years, would have thought it would take so long to write the next chapter. Just ran into a serious time deficit and haven't found time to sit down and write. Changed jobs just after the new year and work 10+ hours a day AND have a longer commute. Doesn't leave any time (or energy) unfortunately. When I do try to write, I only get little bitty chunks of time, which really isn't enough for me to do more than just get frustrated. There really is a next chapter being slowly eeked out...honest. It has about 8 pages so far--beginning and end fully written but middle a sketchy mess. I do thank you VERY much for the note and not just writing me off. It reminds me of why I enjoyed writing so much...hearing from nice folks. I will finish the story at some point. I promise. FM

BlueEyedElf · 28 February 2006 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

Poor Elrohir. This must be pure torture. And then Estel has to go and make everything worse. I hope he will finally learn his lesson. I figure that he must, since he is a wonderful person in "Lost." I hope someone comes to check on Elrohir again. This shoulder injury does not sound good. In Elrohir's current emotional state he isn't likely to mention it. Estel needs to make some apologies and fast. Great story. I look forward to more.

daw the minstrel · 8 January 2006 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

I just got back from 3 weeks in New Zealand and Australia and am catching up. What do you mean there was another time???? I thought this story was winding down? Are you really so mean that you're going to subject Elrohir to rats again??? I felt terrible enough reading about how the little boy changed.

Silvertree · 23 December 2005 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

Estel is really stubborn isn't he? Goodness! Thanks for finally posting this chapter! Just so you know I haven't given up on you never will until this fic is done once and for all!

pipinheart · 23 December 2005 · Chapter 6: The Rescue

Poor Elladan he is scared for Elrohir, but at least Legolas is there to help him get his brother out... The ones who put him in the cave should be upset but they may have learned thier lesson... Elrohir wakes up and is confussed, at least one of his abusers helped him out of the dark.. I love the little twin stories...

pipinheart · 23 December 2005 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

Poor Ellanda he can't get through that thick skull of Estel's... He just think Elrohir is a coward. Elrohir is in pain and hurt and he should indeed tell of his injuries, stubron Elf. And Estel's words hurt him. There was a second time with rats, what luck...Please continue soon, can't wait... I love the story's of them as children...

andromida · 21 December 2005 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

Oh i've totaly waited ages for this update and it was worth it don't you just want to slap Estel! Poor Elrohir he needs a hug and Elladan needs to sleep he's freaking out.I can't wait for the next chapter Elrohir stuck with more rats oh the waiting i can't stand it LOL.Thanks for updating Andromida

perelleth · 20 December 2005 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

I seem to have somehow issed lat chapter, but both were great. Poor elfling! yet it was great fun to see BElder starring here! Ha! Who would have told! A sign that one can grow up his own foolishness! Yet Estel is being greatly adolescent here, poor Elrohir! I laughed loud at the end of last chapter! I couldn't belive it, yet it was so accurate! I can clearly picture Elladan`s exasperation and LEgolas wishibg he were somoewhere else! And nother story! Now! poor Elrohir, yet good for us! :-)

Bodkin · 20 December 2005 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

It is NO GOOD! You are going to have to make that brat suffer. A lot. He is such a good depiction of a kid his age. Every word reminds me of how totally infuriating and insensitive and flipping KNOW-IT-ALL they are at that age - when they, in fact, know pretty well nothing. He has no conception of the difference between facing your fears and going on regardless and having no fear. Elladan is about to explode. Poor Elrohir. And, if he doesn't get his back/shoulder seen to soon, he is going to be dependent on Legolas to get them out of there - because dweeb-boy won't be any use. Can we see Estel get a good kicking - please? He is such an annoying little ... Dunadan.

Aislynn Crowdaughter · 20 December 2005 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

The immature and stupid way Estel is behaving in this, I am astonished Elladan (who should rather rest and allow himself to recover) and Legolas are still trying to convince him instead of simply telling the annoying brat to shut up already, and not speak to him again until he apologized. They should take him back to Rivendell and tell him that he won't be taken to any other trips until he apologized and learned some empatghy, and he won't be taken on dangerous missions until he learned that true valor is overcoming one's fear; because as long as Estel thinks you have to feel no fear to be a warrior, and sneers at anyone who does, he is a liability and danger to any group of warrior who would take him along. I am beginning to lose patience with Estel here and I am astonished that Elladan still has some. Aislynn

Kitty · 20 December 2005 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

You mean there was another traumatic experience for Elrohir?? Oh my poor darling! *hugs Elrohir* You're torturing him quite a bit, don't you? Just now I don't truly know if I first want to knock sense in Estel or rather go and comfort poor Elrohir. It is about time *someone* looks after Elrohir and tends to his other injuries! And not only the bodily injuries, but the injuries of the soul as well. Well, I know in "Lost" Aragorn is a wonderful young man who helds his brother in very high esteem again, but although that is some comfort, right now I feel quite violent because he insists on Elrohir being a coward! Estel had a sudden desire to drop the bandages, grab Elrohir, and hug away the hurt that he had caused. *WHY* couldn't he do exactly *this* instead of being the stubborn human again?? Maybe you should be worried about how protecting Estel from the wrath of your readers ;-) Anyway, wonderful chapter, and of course now I *can't* wait for the next update! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Jay of Lasgalen · 20 December 2005 · Chapter 7: Apologies?

Oh my - poor Elrohir! He had another encounter with rats? No wonder it all had such a terrible, lingering efect on him. I really think that Elladan (or Legolas if he's not well enough) should go and find Elrohir and drag him back to their camp. They know he's hurting inside, they know there's at least one injury they missed, they know he needs support. He shouldn't be alone right now - I'm worried about him. I still want to kick Estel into next week!! Thanks for the update, Jay

Ellie · 26 November 2005 · Chapter 6: The Rescue

Another excellent chapter! This is such a great story. Estel is so, well, blind and stupid to not see the point Elladan and Legolas were trying to make. I hope he gets himself sorted out before he hurts Elrohir even more. Thanks for updating! Looking forward to more!

Author's reply

Estel is being pretty stupid, I agree. I imagine Elladan and Legolas are feeling somewhat frustrated with him at the moment. Actually, I've already written the beginning of the next chapter, and they ARE feeling frustrated. :) Estel will still take some more convincing, but he doesn't really do anything else directly to Elrohir to hurt him.

Elena Tiriel · 26 November 2005 · Chapter 6: The Rescue

Gripping story, FirstMate! Very tense, especially for those readers like me who get really claustrophobic, but that's only because your writing pulls me in so much emotionally. But I'm so glad "little" Elrohir is out of the cave, and out of his self-imposed mental detachment! Now, just how do you intend to give Estel the necessary enlightenment? I can't wait to find out! - Barbara

Author's reply

Well, I'm glad for your sake that Elrohir is out of the cave, then. I'm not claustrophobic, but I can imagine that going through the narrow tunnels would be horrid for anyone. Estel still needs a bit more storytelling, actually, before he reaches that enlightenment. Poor Elladan and Legolas aren't done yet!

Silvertree · 23 November 2005 · Chapter 6: The Rescue

Why won't Estel understand!?!?! Will he open up in the next chapter?

Author's reply

Uhm...he doesn't understand because he's being stubborn. Plain and simple. Also, if he admits he was wrong, then he'll have to acknowledge how much he hurt his brother for no good reason. And no, I'm afraid he won't be opening up in the next chapter either. He still needs a bit more understanding first.

Silvertree · 23 November 2005 · Chapter 6: The Rescue

WindSinger · 23 November 2005 · Chapter 6: The Rescue

Yea! Another chapter -- and a nice long one too! Very well done! I love the mix of excitement for the elflings - to be going on an adventure, to be helping another and to make their parents proud - only to revert to fear and concern for their brother/friend. Seems like a very realistic portrayal of the roller coaster emotions would tend to take in a situation like that. And I love how you show the emotional turmoil and its effect in Elladan - using a bit more detached Legolas to emphasize the different levels of care and concern. And Estel still doesn't get it! I can't wait to see how you pound sense into his head! Very nice!!! And thank you SO much for sharing! WindSinger

Author's reply

Well, you're welcome! I really do enjoy writing and sharing makes it so much more fun. I'm glad you agree with the boy's thoughts during their adventure. I've had a hard time writing the little fellows (easier to write them "bigger"), so I'm relieved that I didn't mess them up too badly!

Kitty · 23 November 2005 · Chapter 6: The Rescue

Belmandren was Belder *speechless* That's certainly unexpected! Obviously the twins didn't held this bad jest against him in the end and became friends with him nonetheless. Anyway, wonderful chapter! You've captured the feelings of the two rescuers so well - the sense of adventure in the beginning, the shock to see Elrohir's injuries clearly for the first time, the struggle to rescue him and in particular Elladan's exhaustion but stubborn refusal to let Legolas take over. It was so good to have Elrohir out of this damned cave and back in the care of his parents, but it was frightening to see him lost in these horrible nightmares and not responding to anyone for so long! I'm impressed with Belmandren's insistence to get to Elrohir and then, facing Elrond, his refusal to back down but to try and help the little elf. It took a lot of bravery to do this, considering his own role in Elrohir's accident. It's a bit ironic that Elrohir in the end reacted to Belmandren after his own parents and twin hadn't any success in their desperate trys to reach him. I think Belmandren did a lot to redeem himself with this. Of course this had to have some lasting effects. Poor Elrohir, it is only too understandable he doesn't like caves, not to mention rats! I'm sure *I* would never set my foot near a cave again after such an experience! But Estel ... *shakes head* ... of course, he is a teen and knows everything! I want to grab him and shake (or beat!) a bit of sense in his head! He has obviously still not comprehended what Elladan and Legolas tried to tell him with this tale, and I look forward to the next update in the hope he will eventually understand the matter!

Author's reply

Hey! You were the only one who picked up on the "Belder" connection (or, at least the only one who mentioned it). Yeah, this is the same guy who was an important part of the search for Elrohir in "Lost." He turns out to be a really good friend in the years to come. I'm glad Elrohir is finally out of the cave, too. I knew the outline of the chapters when I started so I knew he would be rescued in chapter six, but I NEVER imagined it would take so long to get to it. The next chapter is coming along nicely, though, so I'm hoping to get it out before the holidays. No, Estel just isn't getting it and I'm afraid isn't going to redeem himself in the next chapter. Foolish child.
