· Chapter 47: Ravelling in the Loose Ends
Wow....I have just loved this story and the two characters of Haleth and Inglor!
I had first read the prequel 'The Finder' and there, was very much confused who the finder was and who the elf was. Then I saw this story and was happy by the length of it (the longer the better!) so decided to read it.
I am confused about Inglor and the elf called Gildor Inglorion. Is he Inglor's son or it is a different Inglor???
I love how Haleth and Inglor's past are yet untold (that means that many tales from you!) and am waiting for more from you.
I would love you to write some parts or entire chapters from Inglor's POV since he hardly gets a few paragraphs. It would be interesting to know about his thoughts especially thoughts on Haleth.
So according to Inglor, they are engaged? And Haleth has no clue at all about the significance of the ring? Lol, ROTFL-ing business.
I read one of your replies to a review whichwent something like this: Inglor and Haleth...it would be good while it lasted but such a tragedy when Haleth died. Inglor would be heartbroken.
But whether they do confess themselves to be lovers or not, I imagine Inglor would still be very heartbroken when Haleth dies or if he has to leave for Valinor. He loves her, doesn't matter if its acknowledged or not, but ehr death would devastate him either way.
So wouldn't it be better for them to spend some happy moments together?
(Of course that's a hint to you to get them together :D)
Author's reply
Wow. Thank-you for reviewing. Your well considered comments certainly made me think.
I can see how The Finder would be confusing. The only thing familiar is the location.
Gildor Inglorion means Gildor, son of Inglor. Inglor was originally Finrod's name. Finrod was Galadriel's brother and one of the Elf Lords of the First Age. After FotR was published Tolkien changed his mind about giving Inglor/Finrod a son; Finrod left his love, Amarie, in Valinor and never had a son in Middle-earth. Unfortunately, Tolkien never got around to changing the name of Gildor's father or perhaps he did not think it necessary as he had changed Inglor's name to Finrod. There's your useless bit of Tolkien trivia for the day.
It would be very tantalizing to catch a glimpse of what's going on in Inglor's mind. Unfortunately, it's incredibly hard to write. He thinks he's completely transparent in his actions and feelings and to another elf, he probably is. Haleth runs into trouble because she's not an elf and doesn't share his culture or social expecations. It leads to all kinds of misunderstandings and missed cues on the part of both of them.
Yes, Inglor will be unhappy when Haleth dies. But elves see marriage differently than mortals. For them there is only one spouse, even if the other dies. It's very cruel to give Inglor a few decades of happiness at the expense of an eternity of hopeless loneliness, which would be the case if he married Haleth. He'll be very unhappy when she dies, but if they don't marry there is the slim chance he could recover in several centuries and find someone new. He is good at finding things.
Thank-you again for reviewing.

WOW! Hope time and circumstance allow you to write more Haleth and Inglor adventures. The characters are so endearing; it makes one care what happens to them. Also, I love your animal characters (the walrus and the cold drake).
Humor is certainly your strong point!
I don't have email except at work and hardly ever check it. My home computer died months ago; just now replaced it.
I have memory problems from two concussions years ago, so when I looked for your fanfic I couldn't remember the author, the title, or the main characters.
HOWEVER, I remembered the author and main character had the same name, which was taken from Tolkien. Using a search engine for Tolkien names, I found a
name that sounded familiar: HALETH. Whew! Thank goodness I rediscovered your delightful tale! Best wishes to one of my favorite authors! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Author's reply
Thank-you, Lyn.
I'm really glad to hear from you again. You really helped me with spelling and grammatical errors. It's a real compliment that you took the time to read so carefully and to let me know about the problems. It sounds like you did some detective work to find the story again. I'm honoured.
Computers are persnickity things. They usually chose the worst possible moment to give up the ghost. It's annoying when the favourites list vanishes into the ether.
I hope your Christmas was merry and that the New Year brings you joy.

I wrote another Inglor and Haleth story for National novel writing month this year but it really, really, really needs to be severely editted before it's ready to be seen.

I really loved this story ..... except I feel so at loose ends about Haleth and Iglor. The way you wrote the ending is screaming for more adventures . Aside from the above. I loved both the characters and the story. I do hope you plan a sequel. Thanks for a great read.
Author's reply
Thank-you, Kathy.
I'm very glad you enjoyed the story and honoured that you took the time to review it.
You're right. There are a lot of loose ends left at the end of the story. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble thinking of a semi-workable plot. There are a few stories from earlier in the time line that are ready to be posted. I hope they'll do until the lightning bolt of inspiration hits me between the eyes.
Thank-you again.

Author Reply: Sorry, Kathy, I should have mentioned this. There is an incomplete prequel to Pitfalls of the Palantir posted on SOA. It is called Castamir's Heir. It doesn't resolve any of the tension between the two main characters but I hope you might find it entertaining.

Sorry not to have left a review sooner but real life continues to interfer. I can't say how much I enjoyed your story. The main characters are very well written and have distinctive and strong personalities. That combined with an interesting plot that kept me guessing (and checking for the next chapter) made for a wonderful story. I'm not sure if you have plans for any more Haleth and Iglor (sp) stories, but I for one one would love to see some further adventures. Not to mention answers to some questions: 1) the silver ring Iglor gave Haleth (Hmmm...isn't it suppose to mean they are "engaged???"), 2) Does Iglor have a clue as to how Haleth feels about him (it's clear Haleth has no idea what that ring means ), 3) Just who is Iglor anyway and what is he really doing in middle earth (he sounds old and didn't he have to be in Valinor to know that Fin (can't remember how to spell his name and too lazy to look came back from Mandos), and finally for that matter (maybe I missed something) 4) What exactly in Haleth's background.
Author's reply
Please dont' apologize, Kathy. I appreciate your taking the time to let me know you enjoyed the story. There are plans for at least two more stories, but they are much shorter and are prequels rather than sequels.
To answer some of your questions. 1) Yes. 2) It's difficult to say. He doesn't seem to understand her jealousy. It's probably just as well because I doubt he'd approve of it if he did. 3)Inglor is a member of the House of Finarfin. He does know Finrod and he is very old. 4) There's a (as yet unwritten) story to Haleth's background so I'm going to be really annoying and not answer. Sorry!
Thank-you again for reviewing this and so many other chapters. It's always a real boost to know people are enjoying the story.

Thank you for the many hours of giggling and enjoyment you have given me. I do hope your other stories are quickly' fit for human consumption' - although Inglor is already VERY much so. I know I have been impatient with Haleht but actually the tension between them is what makes it fun! Write soon please.

Thank-you, ziggy. I'm really glad that the story made you laugh. It started life as a comedy, but the characters had other ideas.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my evening reading your delightful story from beginning to end. I seriously hope that you have plans to give Inglor and Haleth further adventures - they are a most delightful pair. The romantic in me would like to think that one day they would stop talking past each other and say what they need to - if nothing else, have Inglor explain to Haleth the meaning of the ring he gave her - but that too could be another story complete with adventure, misunderstandings and fragile moments.
Your depth of character development is fantastic - and you have creating fully-fleshed and yet wonderfully flawed personalities. It would be a shame, in my opinion, to drop their story here. Please consider a sequel.
Bravo. VERY well done.
Namastè!

Author's reply
Thank-you for taking the time to review, Marlyn. I'm glad that you enjoyed the story and the characters. Inglor feels he's demonstrated his emotions by deeds. Words are, in his opinion, unnecessary. Haleth might be convinced to actually put her emotions into words, but she is too determined that Inglor is above her and so afraid of being rejected and loosing his companionship entirely that she keeps quiet.
There are very vague plans for a sequel. I hope a prequel or two might be acceptable in the mean time.
Thank-you again.

Tolkien wrote so much information about Middle-earth and made so many asides to historical events that it is incredibly easy to build characters and steal...I mean think up plot twists.
This, of course, doesn't include some of the loopier ideas.

Author's reply
That's ok. I knew who you meant. Gildor's full name was Gildor Inglorion, or Gildor son of Inglor. It goes back to a time before Tolkien changed Inglor's name to Finrod and decided that Finrod did not leave any heirs.

It's really a compliment that you want to continue the story of these characters yourself. Being horribly curious, I have to wonder what you would have them do now? Go back for the other palantir? Oh no! It could all start again! I hope Odob hides this one away somewhere safe.
Author's reply
It could begin again, couldn't it? Hopefully Odob will have better luck keeping his clam this time, although I think he'd be less than impressed by it when it proved inedible.
Odob would abandon the clam on the beach and, if the Lossoth did not find it, it would remain there for years as the world changed around it and the shape of the sea changed and it was buried beneath the rocks and shifting sands of time. Until some enterprising Sixth Age treasure hunter dug it up. What would become of it then? Would Inglor try to retrieve it? Wouldn't THAT be a culture shock for everyone involved?

Yes, even the jokes were perfectly in character.
And while I agree with Luinhoth, Hosluin sounded strange and foreign enough to fit perfectly with their mysterious origins. And the asthmatic dragon was such a hoot. MAsterful command of canon put to entertaining good use. Ai, I´m gonna miss lookig foward to upddates! :-)

It doesn't look it at first glance, but there is a fair amount of opportunity for humour in Middle-earth. It just takes a somewhat twisted sense of humour to find it.
There will be more stories featuring these characters. They just need some cleaning up before they're fit for human consumption.

This has been such a pleasant trip.. and I love it that it ends as it began! SO the circle is almost closed since we know not how many relics Inglor was after. Yet I love it that you leave it there. Open. Or closed. I have enjoyed this tale more than I can tell, Haleth, it is clever and witty and also thoughtful and perfectly in canon. THere are memorable OCs (i so liked the mAster of Esgaroth) and hilarious moments, and a perfect use of condensed language to express such a range of emotions! I think that making people laugh with written word is one of the most difficult exercises, and you succeded perfectly here.
I´d love to see more adventures. I´ll be patient. Congratulations for the good job and many thanks for many enjoyable moments! :-)
Author's reply
Thank-you, Perelleth
It was very good of you to take the time to review each and every chapter, even when there was a two month gap in posting and even with the interludes, which are quite short. Your reviews always encouraged me to keep at it. Writing can be a solitary activity and it is always good to know another person is enjoying the story.
I've never liked closed endings where everything it tied up in a nice, neat package. Life is never like that, why should stories?
'...we know not how many relics Inglor was after...'
Well, not yet, at any rate. And who's to say Inglor is the only relic hunter?
You give me too much credit for using condensed language. I wish I could say it's a well honed skill, but in fact it's the only way I know how to write. The same can be said for the comedy. It's not really intentional. It's just what seems to happen. Never ascribe to genius what can easily be explained by laziness.
There should be more Inglor and Haleth adventures. Vampfan30 has been gracious enough to beta read for me. (YAY Vampfan!) But it will be slow because I edit at the rate of continental drift.
Again, thank-you for all of the reviews and encouragement.

Yes, Inglor knows Finrod. I'd like to know how they met, too. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I know about as much about Inglor's origins as Haleth does. If they haven't told each other how they feel to this point, it seems unlikely they'll ever manage.

Once more Haleth looks directly at the obvious and doesn't see it. The two of them are from very different societies. They completely miss each other's signals.
Is Haleth afraid of being rejected or afraid of not being rejected?
The poor old dragon. Tolkien states Smaug was the last Fire Drake. There is mention of Cold Drakes on the Withered Heath on one of the maps. All of the magical creatures seem to be dying off, so it wasn't a big jump to go from there to the ancient, decrepit, asthamtic dragon.

Awww! This was a sharp, welcome contrast to last chapter. I like the melancholy tone of their wanderings, now that everything is over, and the Plantir "safe" The dwarven porn channel was such a hoot. GOld, after all! Of course! poor HAleth. ANd their quiet bantering about their early adventures...perfect, fun but reminicent at the same time.
I love it how subtly you show the change in their relationship, but still they are their own selves, Haleth sticking a foot in her mouth at the lesser occasion and Inglor his how wise, sidelong clueless and exasperating self... yet I liked it how he almost raged when Haleth joked with Finrod´s death. AS I said around the first chapters of this long, wonderful adventure, I, for one, took them for their namesakes and have not been disappointed, even if they turn out being descendants.
I do not want ths to end.

Is Inglor actually Finrod? I think it's best to leave it up to individual readers to decide. Certainly a case can be made for it. There is almost no one left in Middle-earth who would recogize Finrod, so who can say?

At least the palantir took out the drake on its way. And is in (probably) the safest place. While Inglor and Haleth are back together - even if they are indulging in the kind of hysterical laughter that ensures they are totally unprepared to fight for their lives.
I wonder how Haleth enjoyed the upside-down view! I suspect rescue was more than welcome.

A dance? The Minuet of the Flying Palantir? That dance is probably too modern but The Galliard of the Dropping Palantir just doesn't have the same ring to it, though. (Can't you just picture people hopping around, holding one foot and screaming?)
